In a dingy hotel room at 1am as the team is packing...Kevin Jackson reflects on the World Championships. He emphasizes that wrestlers need to train 12 months out of the year...not 6 months and they have to train at Colorado Springs. He talks about the let down with Henry Cejudo and Mike Zadick, and the positives of the other wrestlers.

There are 3 (I think) more chances for the U.S. to qualify the 55kg and 60kg weight classes to compete in the Olympics, including next year's Pan Am Championships. Which wrestlers will fill those slots, assuming the weights get qualified, will be determined at the Olympic Team Trials next June, just as the World Team is decided by the World Team Trials in off-Olympic years. Cejudo and Zadick will have the same opportunity to qualify at Trials as every other U.S. wrestler in their respective weight classes.

Someone please confirm what the whole deal is with the qualifications for the olympics??
Are Cejudo and Zadick not able to wresle at the olympics or what????????

USA 6 years ago

Thanks for the interview! Coach Jackson evaluated his staff and team very honestly and I hope they can take it to that next level by the Olympics.

That kind of coach/mentor is such a great inspiration, very helpful to athletes everywhere, no matter what they love to do.

OTC Fan 6 years ago

Training at the OTC didn't seem to work too well for Cejudo. In fact it looks as though in his years since being there he has slowly, but surely shown signs of deterioration. He used to use technique and strategy, and it was fun to watch, but now looking at worlds... He was doing nothing but flailing his arms and badly faking shots like a crazed lunatic, (kinda reminds of Mike Zadick)and lost to a loser. Humans are born with brains and minds, so it only makes sense that people that think beat people without any brains. His training obviously was crap. The US's training from the OTC was crap in general. Look at who placed. Brands is screwing up. Jackson is screwing up. They should take a page out of Greco's book and hire foreign coaches to do their jobs for them (all that mattters is that technically we have American heroes as coaches right?) They should have sent Gallick instead of Zadick, I mean he did win the wrestle off. If we only have refs support the guys that Brands and Jackson support we are obviously going to lose because we won't be sending the best people to Worlds and Olympics. Furthermore, if we keep screwing over foreigners when they come to the USA, we will never notice that we aren't very good wrestlers. All it does is makes us look good. It's time to face the music, because results don't lie.

why dont all the guys go to CO. Springs? What are the pro's and cons? If it is your profession, then why not go to the springs?

Quite Confused 6 years ago

I don't understand how anyone, even Kevin could say that Cejudo and Zadick didn't "bring the heat". The heat was brought, and the fight was definitely there. They were both technically outclassed going to worlds. They may have some success starting out with an all brawn no brains approach, but that's just because it's surpising. At this point, the foreign countries have seen it already, and to believe really hard that it's all about spirit, heart, determination, conditioning, and fighting is causing us to think we can bring a knife to a gun fight. If we don't stop thinking like this, our country is going to perform this way every year. Our whole system is wrong, and we need to stop preaching it. Oh, and my comment that Mike was outclassed may seem a little rough, but the guy has no functional skills other than his ankle pick. How is he going to slick someone with only one decent move? Worlds last year was good for America, but as they say "Even a blind squirrel occaisonally finds a nut"

nah, olympic trials are a whole new qualification, our team could be a little different going to bejing

Hawkeye Man 6 years ago

I typed in Mike's last name, but it starred out the last 4 letters, kind of childish in my mind.

Hawkeye Man 6 years ago

Is there another chance for the 2 weights we didn't qualify at the WC's to qualify at some other tournament, or are Cejudo and Zadick now not going to the Olympics?

Coach Jackson is the man, i think he has got a lot of good things coming to him.
