David Taylor looks like the better wrestler to me. Two down one to go. I think he gets Dake and takes the title in a couple weeks.

You didn't happen to do the commentary for the Penn State Vs. Nebraska dual last year, did you?
David Taylor will not tech fall Dake, that'll never happen. How can you say Taylor is the better wrestler? Dake pinned him in freestyle. Taylor is an awesome wrestler, one of the best ever but to say he'll tech Dake is preposterous.
And where is exactly is Dake going to wrestle at on the world circuit? Burroughs is there for the next 4 years atleast. Dake and Taylor are very very good but they will never be able to beat Burroughs; he is on a different level. For that matter, Dake or Taylor couldn't beat Howe right now either.
As they go out of bounds, Taylor's hips are still behind Dake's hips. (9:46) Therefore no change. Bad call by the referees. It happens.
Great calls by the referee. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. I can see how people who aren't familiar with the rules could be confused, but there is no controversy here.
Reversal? Doubtful. Control at the end? Definitely not. Hope it fuels Taylor for March.
That was a great match and I think the ref got it right, the next match should be epic as well. They''ll both learn from this match and it should be fireworks at the ncaa's.
I'm, sorry but Dake didn't have control until out of bounds on his reversal. His left foot was out when he committed to the actual flip. At most 1 point should have been awarded and started back neutral.
I think both calls were close, and can be argued. I just don’t think they are consistent with each other. I don’t have a problem with the escape at the end, and I think most referees would call it that way. Clearly, there was a moment where Dakes hands were not locked, but normal reaction time was given, and the hands were locked when time expired. The same standard for normal reaction time was not given on the reversal, and it was awarded on an “instantaneous” basis. I think most referees would have called that a loss of control rather than a reversal.
The two calls, Dake's reversal on the edge and the last second no escape or not by Taylor, both were close calls but after looking at the videos were probably the right calls. In real time, very tough calls as well. But to point out how close this match was, the riding at the end was just a few seconds less than 1 min for Taylor. Going back to 8:24-8:36 in the video, Taylor's reversal at the edge, it seems to me the reversal, call there was delayed almost 2 sec after Taylor grabbed both of Dake's legs and he is posting on one arm. After the ref signals the reversal the riding time continued to tick in Dake's favor for another 1-2 secs. Had the call been made earlier and the RT clock changed we may have ended in a tie at the end, 3-3, going to OT. How does anyone else see that reversal and what is the rule here.
Interesting to see that reverse angle. With Taylor now 0-3 against Dake, he needs to rethink everything he's doing against Dake. To do list: 1) find a way to negate Dake's clear advantage in ties/handfighting, 2) find a way to counter Dake's tripod move from bottom, 3) build on what he himself did from bottom in this match--it was clearly his best position. Beyond this, he needs to find more energy and wrestle harder. You don't beat Dake by squeaking out close matches--that's his game. You have to go after him, get your own game going, and build a lead. All easier said than done, but I agree with the comment below that a lot of DT's problem at this point is mental. If he can change that, he can find a way to beat Dake. If not, Dake will continue to own him.
While not at the same speed nor with the gramby out of bounds, the Capone vs Telford match last night had a similar standing reversal call in Capone's favor.
I also saw a fan video of the match from a different angle and it looks like Dake has his hands locked up on Taylor's leg to the extent that has any impact on the call. I don't know what the rule is. here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_s6nDf4-5YMAlso, I have a few questions/observations I would like to throw out.Knowing that only a few seconds remained in the match why don't you think Dake locked up a bear hug to do a pop and drop or to just hold on? Also, I noticed Dake didn't attempt a big pop & drop like he usually does with other opponents. Why do you think this is? Concerned about Taylor's length or counter ability on the mat? Caldwell is lengthy also and it worked w him.In that last scramble when Dake had his leg in - why do you think he let himself get so wide and get himself into that standing position? Can he not lock up a figure 4 on Taylor or keep the leg in deep and stay behind?Unless something strange happens I think these 2 will meet in the finals. It seems to me that they should almost exclusively train for each other.Dake made a shot in this match - Taylor didn't. Despite being ridden more it looked like Dake was able to break down Taylor than the other way around. Dake seems more mentally tough and comfortable with himself than Taylor does imo. Both are great and closely matched. Thanks for any comments or insights.

Hey Dake, being more aggressive doesn't mean you that you complete one shot and then use a defensive Russian for the entire first period. That being said, I think he had full control of Taylor for the reversal before he did his front flip out of bounds. Was Dake's hands together at the end of the match or was only one arm wrapped around Taylor's left leg? I think this is actually great for Taylor. Keep that fire burning in him every day when he trains. No one is going to beat Dake or Taylor so they are going to meet again.
possibly one of the worst calls i have seen with that reversal call...it wasnt even close
That was almost as big of a screw-job as Jordan Oliver got in last season's NCAA finals…
i don't mind bader's commenting at all, i actually enjoy it! that's what he's supposed to do! it's better than those vids where no one says anything and it's super boring!!!
Dake's left foot was clearly out of bounds before the awarding of the points. Dake is great, but the video doesn't lie.
i hope you know this video is frozen.. it still says there's 1593 views and only 14 comments... even though there's really 280 comments according to the activity board.... heck, comments don't even show up on this page! you can only read them on the activity board! the newest comment said 1 minute ago but that was posted 8 hours ago!
I didn't expect that to be as bad as it was. I was actually angry after watching that. Shameful.
If you slow down the video you can see that dake was in the merkle position while taylor had his foot in bounds and his weight supported on his hands at the same time, that seems like a reversal, I can't see if his hands are locked around the leg at the end so its tough to say if it was a reversal
Everyone that saw the match knows who really won. The refs seemed to be looking for chances to give Dake the call. I hope the refs at the NCAA's will be better than this.
I thought Talyor stalled often. That was not called and should have been. There was a lot of suspect calls.
How can you call a standing Murkel a reversal??? At no point beyond reaction time did Taylor even come close to putting his hands down for support to have that count for 2. Hit him for 1 pt technical violation for fleeing the mat? Sure. But the reversal? Come on. I I am a Dake fan! And a definite Escape at the end as well. OT should have happened.
There was no weight on the hands, so Dake needed to be in rear standing position for a standing reversal. He was not in rear standing position. Bad call.
Best thing that could have happened for taylor. He got screwed so now hes going to be even hungrier at nationals and win it where it matters.
I think Taylor walked off the mat knowing come March more confident that he can beat Dake even though he lost. And if he had to pick a match to win, it would probably be the NCAAs. I don't know who is going to win, but I know I'm going to watch.
Both tough calls but after watching the replay I think they were the right calls. 2 of the best all time college wrestlers battling...it doesn't get any better then that! Selfishly I wanted overtime just to see them get after it a little more! Can't wait until March and this is settled once and for all!
This was such a clear reversal to merkle by Dake, well within bounds, that it's hard to imagine anyone who actually rewatched the video could think otherwise. Watching it online, I would have thought otherwise, and wondered what the ref was thinking. But rewatching it, I'm thinking it's a good thing I'm not a ref. Good call.
you can get take downs in while in the air now, and you can also get probable take downs, wow wrestling has evolved into a very complicated sport.
you can get take downs in while in the air now, and you can also get probable take downs, wow wrestling has evolved into a very complicated sport.
What most don't realize at the end is that the Flo clock is 2-3 seconds behind the actual clock. I watched it live and every match ended with 2-3 seconds left. See: Morrison vs. Dardanes ending to verify. That made a big difference in the call at the end. Same thing happened during the heavyweight match in OT.
I find it interesting that commenters presuppose their own feelings over the experience and on mat observations of the refs. First off, the reversal when slowed down is obvious...the action was clearly initiated in bounds...and Taylor's reaction bore that out. As a prior commenter said, it was a very good and very difficult call.Second, the ref never deviated on not giving the escape...in the film you cannot even see Dake's left arm or hand. How can you possibly judge whether there was an escape or not from that angle? Both refs were adamant and unwavering. I will take their informed opinion over any knucklehead's uninformed one.Great match. Psyched to see the third stanza for sure. Amazing how close these two are and how far ahead of everyone else at the weight.
Taylor got hosed on both calls and I'm a neutral observer. Great wrestlers both. NCAA's should be epic! Hope same ref isn't involved however.
for that reversal the rule is as soon as they are behind their opponent with control it is ruled a standing reversal. Dake was behind with control as they went out of bounds
omg for goodness sakes give dake some cred. geez I love how everyone said fake could not beat Taylor so dake moves up to his weight class and beats him twice!
tough call.....but i agree, saw the reversal in real speed, rewound and saw it again. incredible reffing there.
