respect
wasn't expecting a pin to finish it off

I see nothing wrong. As a wrestler you should exploit your opponent's weakness. Clearly this kid doesn't have the best take down defenses and Oliver capitalized on it. Or maybe it's just because he's wrestling JO. Either way.. pretty bad ass IMO

Andy Keeter 5 months ago

so what's more impressive? oliver's 12 in 3 minutes or dake's 5 in 30 seconds?

Brice Inbody 5 months ago

love it, if you think its too much you might enjoy a sport like tennis or soccer

This is Div 1 NCAAs where guys workout 4-7hrs a day to be the best at what they love doing... Not to mention it was in MSG. If you aren't prepared for a war in the center of the circle, than be prepared to be mangled technically or physically. Taking someone down and letting them up is a way to enforce your will on them and break them both mentally and physically, which Jordan executed... it's a strategy if you're good enough to do it which he apparently is. Same thing goes for boxing with a Jab, just cause I've hit the guy 70 times with the same punch doesn't mean I'm going to stop until I win. It's a combat sport for a reason.

Any college or international wrestler will explain the "Mental State" you have to be in to compete at this level all season long and be successful. You cannot deviate from your plan and you must have the same mindset each time you walk out on the mat... What happens in the center stays there, wrestlers are great people off the mat, but in the center of that circle you need to be prepared to do battle, Oliver was the other kid wasn't, bottom line.

I could care less how many takedowns he got or how he manhandled this guy. It's a tough sport and Oliver broke zero rules. BUT no one should be impressed at all! If any one is impressed by this obviously does not follow this sport well. Same as when Dake had his takedown fest against that scrub a week ago or so. This is not hating, it's being realistic what happened.

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

Wow! A clinic. All you haters...go away. D1 wrestling and he treats this kid like a JV middle school wrestler. I can't believe Oliver jumped TWO wt. classes! He is FUN to watch.

1. I was at MSG and sitting in the Okie State section and I do not recall hearing any boos.
2. I also love what Brian said. You think that guys who wrestled Gable or Sanderson in college don't say they did so with pride in their voice today?
3. At 149 the guys are obviously bigger and stronger than at 133. Putting them away is perhaps not quite as easy as some have suggested.
4. Jared Presely did as well as he could and should hold his head high. JO was much too accomplished for Jared's skill level. Was JO supposed to take it easy? Good way to get in trouble!

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

would I let a hammer on my middle school team do this to another kid in a match that clearly just started wrestling - No.

Would I let my D1 wrestler do this to another D1 wrestler - You damn right.

From a David Taylor fan... 5 months ago

Just wondering, whats the difference between what JO did here and what Taylor did to the kid from Lehigh in the finals last year?

Brian 5 months ago

If it was me I would just tell people I scored 11 points in a match against Jordan Oliver. How many people can say that?

As for unsportsmanlike, no way was this out of line. This is a division 1 match. For what it's worth I doubt his opponent is whining about it.

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

i give the guy respect. i know he's great. he probably felt he had to prove himself as a 149 pounder. but my complete opinion is that i like cutting someone as much as the next guy but i think that after i'd say 8 its time to put the guy down

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

This sport is a combat sport gladiators were forced to wrestle to death at time and ppl boo for something youre suppose to do which is dominate but I dont blame him after last years ncaas i wouldnt leave any doubt on the mat either

Jacob Orth 5 months ago

this dude is beast. hate him all you want. brent metcalf did the same thing. as with david taylor

People complaining saying Oliver is "disgraceful" are the ones responsible for the pussification of America. Why even keep score at all, like they do in T-Ball for little kids, or raise the arm of the winner after a match. We wouldn't want the opponent that loses to feel bad for himself huh? Honestly, it's embarrassing that that this is even a debate.

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

honestly people who are saying this un-sportsman like and not classy are soft and dont know about wrestling. This is a sport where your goal is to pin your opponent but while doing that you want to punish him, embarrass them. Make the, feel like they dont belong on the mat with you. so personally you criticizing him should reconsider if this sport is for you.

That ref is Gary Kessel, and yes he was the assistant ref in his match last year. And guess what, he did tell the head ref, Mike McCormick he thought he had 2. But was overruled.

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

This ref was the assisting ref in oliver's match in the ncaa finals last year. He should have opened his mouth last year and asked the ref that blew oliver's title "Are you sure that is not a takedown?" He got it right this year. a bit of irony!

Jamie Sperrazza 5 months ago

You want to see unsportmanslike, watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sndY3caXU2E (Terry Brands vs. Jeff Prescott) At least JO had the decency to put him out of his misery. I was at JO's match on Sunday. 8 take downs into it I felt like Apollo Creeds trainer when he was fighting Drago. Throw in the Towel!

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

If anyones being a poor sport and also unpatriotic its that other kid for wrestling like a scrub... Olivers trying to prepare for Rio! Go out there and wrestle him hard!!!

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

this is an awesome display of skill and endurance. it is what you should do to a weaker opponent. if anyone complains that it is unsportsmanlike to get takedowns you are watching the wrong sport. that's the point of wrestling: to score points and get pins.

SHOCKED 5 months ago

those of u stating JO is a punk are pathetic. stop hating!!! presley is a d1 wrestler. period!! in the arguably the toughest combat sport in the universe. anyone that has wrestled at the next level understands. are you really going to be upset with someone displaying dominance? thats kinda the goal. sucks to know wrestling "fans" like you exist. pu ssys. plz dnt raise a male child. our society is bad enough.

"wrestler4life 1 day ago

Non stop marauding for points! Thats what we teach, score and score and score again until the man in the striped shirt tells you "thats enough". Take your opponent out of the match not only physically but mentally as well. Make him think that there is no way he can beat you. Break him!"
That is how I was coached. That is how I coach. Too bad for this kid that he cant stop it. Takedowns are to wrestling what the running game is too football. You cant stop the run, you cant stop the team. Figure it out or lose.

Howie Fartz, you are likely a low-functioning tea bagger with exceptionally small genitals. One of those Larry Craig / Ted Haggard / Jerry Sandusky conservatives.

If you don't respect that you don't know our sport

Me too! 5 months ago

I always wanted to live wrestle a National Champ. Not practice or at a camp, but really go at it.

Tom or Terry Brands were on my list. I would have had no chance to score on them, but dang what a thrill.
Anybody else?

Howie Fartz 5 months ago

Anyone booing or calling this bad sportsmanship is prolly a liberal...... and would of been happier if they wouldve just hugged and kissed and gave extra pats on each others backside.

And to the guy that brought up about JOs takedown at 2:00, I commented on it earlier.

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

Whoever says this is poor sportsmanship is a . You're probably a vegetarian, and that's why America is becoming so soft because people are so damn sensitive. When I was wrestling I enjoyed handin out horrible ass whoopens as well as receiving them is part of entertaining the spectators, to get the people more involved this is not acting you don't act like he got your leg

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

thats a good old fashion a## whippin right there,... sportsmanship? whoever mentioned it, its part of the sport. You may get your butt whipped 1 on 1. Especially if you are wrestling guys like oliver. Give oliver credit he is a dominant wrestler. Stop finding stuff wrong awesome wresters. Negative negative negative ppl
