Two of the top 113lbers in the country squared off in the KC finals. Great bout with late drama. You make the calls.

NOT EVEN CLOSE, and thats not fleeing, which other direction do you want him to go after he tried what looked to be duck under? And he was still standing at the end, not jumping out of bounds

fudge tunnel 5 months ago

Not 2, but should have been 1 for fleeing the mat...

Bruce Steinel 5 months ago

Although the call of TD was bad, I would still say it is fleeing the mat which would have ended the match anyway. I wouldn't have called either, just a thought though

I wasn't trying to disparage the ref or the quality of officiating in MO - even though I'm sure someone from MO would think so - I merely have issue with the poster trying to justify the call. My only thoughts on this are that posters justifying the call are:
1) from a state where they do not see quality officiating on a consistent basis and therefore are not as knowledgeable as they could be on what the correct call - or rather the usual/expected call, since there is no "correct" call here as it is a subjective call regarding the interpretation of control/covered hips - would be in this situation

or:
2) A homer
I will assume you are #2, since you know that MO has 2 refs who officiate at the NCAA championships (were either of them officiating Oliver-Stieber, lol, just kidding).
On your other points:
"Let me guess, you're from one of the power states and every call made in your state is 100% spot on, what a joke. For the record, MO has 2 refs who officiate at the NCAA championships, Big Ten & etc every year, so i think MO is fine when it comes to officiating."
Read my post - most states have some fine officials and there are bad officials in every state. I am merely stating the obvious - the depth of quality officiating is greater in the power states. I know my comment in the post before was a bit arrogant. I apologize and probably shouldn't have generalized about this particular official or call - I was more trying to call out the poster (aka Steven Gaughan), who is way off base. I mean, look at the video and then try to read his "failed boot-scoot" comment and try not to laugh. I shouldn't have morphed this into one of the power-state vs. non-power state arguments, but I did.
"Assistant refs are there to make sure that all calls are called correctly. If the assistant refs aren't man enough to challenge an incorrect call, get them off the mat. I've seen many calls overturned and if the assistant ref felt the call was incorrect, he should've said something."
That is not the assistant refs job - to challenge an incorrect judgement call. They have some responsibilities, but this is not one of them. If the official needed needed help and asked for it, then the assistant should be "man enough" to voice his opinion. For the record, after rewatching the match, the head official looks pretty good. Look when you are in SV, you've got to be decisive and firm with your calls. Unfortunately, he got it wrong - it happens to the best of them. I will agree that the officials vantage point may have impacted the call. I think in this case, the vantage point of the camera was actually a better position to make this call, but have no problem with where the official was positioned. It happens.
"The "level" of officiating changes from state to state. Our team wrestled at a major HS tournament this year out east and I was puzzeled by how some of the calls were officiated. Our team had to adjust to the refs and move on."
WOW, it looks like we do agree after all. I think this is exactly what I was saying.

Regarding the right hand, I didn't realize that all takedowns wouldn't warrant 2 if around the hip. You obviously need to go back and watch the video again, Hayes's right hand was on Russell's right leg prior to moving up the hip. Once again, if you look at the position of the ref making the call and make the call from his position, it's 2. Better yet, if you had access to footage from the ref's position, it's clearly 2.

Let me guess, you're from one of the power states and every call made in your state is 100% spot on, what a joke. For the record, MO has 2 refs who officiate at the NCAA championships, Big Ten & etc every year, so i think MO is fine when it comes to officiating. Will everyone agree with every call, of course not but they nor your state is perfect.
Assistant refs are there to make sure that all calls are called correctly. If the assistant refs aren't man enough to challenge an incorrect call, get them off the mat. I've seen many calls overturned and if the assistant ref felt the call was incorrect, he should've said something.

Seriously, " The right hand firmly grasps the right hip while the left hand clasps the foot. That's AFTER reaction time. While the defensive wrestler is on his butt, following a failed boot-scoot, the offensive wrestler can be seen with even more control because he has hip and foot while the defensive wrestler is on his butt. That was control. That's an easy 2. If you can't see that, slow it down and try using glasses."

I'm not 100% sure what part of the country you are from, but I'm guessing MO. You are probably used to this level of officiating. I'm going to take heat about this, but I see refs from all over the country and I can tell you that although there are great and bad refs in most states, the quality of officiating is deeper in the power states. It is - it has to be, they just get to work many more high level matches. And I don't mean to disparage this official. I don't have any knowledge of him, I'm just making a call on a very limited body of work. This is going to come off as arrogant, but whatever, it's true. There is nobody that has watched a lot of high level wrestling, where things happen very fast, situations change quickly, etc that is going to call that two 99% of the time.
It is what it is, the ref blew the call. It happens. Doesn't mean the kid from MO wouldn't have won later, just means he got a good call this time.
And the guy who said that it was confirmed by the assistant ref, really????? In what alternate wrestling universe do you live in where the assistant would get involved in that? We have assistant refs working NCAA finals that would confirm worse calls than that. Again, it is what it is. The ref made a quick incorrect call, you just move along to the next match. That's wrestling, that's what happens.

I saw this match live, I was in position to see the call and it was two. it is a tough call but non the less it is two, slow it down and then see if it was two.. I think your opinion will change at that point;

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

I'm a big Hayes fan, but that wasn't 2!! Having control of one leg out of bounds is not 2.

Steven Gaughan 5 months ago

Find the offensive wrestlers hands at the end. The right hand firmly grasps the right hip while the left hand clasps the foot. That's AFTER reaction time. While the defensive wrestler is on his butt, following a failed boot-scoot, the offensive wrestler can be seen with even more control because he has hip and foot while the defensive wrestler is on his butt. That was control. That's an easy 2. If you can't see that, slow it down and try using glasses.

Hard angle to judge from on the takedown.
Definitely not boring. IMO a classic high school version of Dake and Taylor's All- Star match earlier this season!

wrestler4life 5 months ago

That was not two and if I were coaching, I would not let my guy leave the mat. There was all kinds of bad on that call.

@wrestler4life 5 months ago

There were 2 refs on the mat and the secondary ref confirmed the call. The coaches did argue the call but the call was upheld, right or wrong.

horrible call.

big Suge 5 months ago

Watched it many times...looked like 2 to me. Don't dis on the HWT's we are the anchor of every team!

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

A lot of home cooking calls at this tourney for the MO schools.

Nick 5 months ago

Worst call ever.

Nickolas Velliquette 5 months ago

I agree. Close call but don't think the cam angle here tells the whole story on the Hayes takedown. Looked like two from where I was standing matside...but, yea, was still a quick call.

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

Flo should've never posted the question. The problem with this question is the footage is from the angle which the ref isn't making the call. If you was sitting at or behind the score table, one could say it wasn't 2 but if you was sitting in front of the scoring table, it was clearing 2 because you could see the leg and hand position. Awful call said there was only one leg in bounds, you are so far from the truth. As far boring match, it was more of a chess match because these 2 wrestlers have a history and I believe they didn't want to make a mistake that may cause them the match.

TERRIBLE CALL! CH kid was closer to a TD moments earlier. LIttle home cookin perhaps?

Tonetroc 5 months ago

Terrible call.. TWICE!! Unfortunately even worse on the compensation call @ the end. Need replay for high school as well.

Unless the rules changed 5 months ago

Absolutely no 2 and a terrible way to lose but neither guy did much during the match!! Almost as boring as watching Heavy Weights I would expect a high flying match between 2 of the best 113lbers

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

Ref blew it. Not even close.

Awful Call 5 months ago

Only had one leg. Easy call no two.

DJ Vondruska 5 months ago

I say no two. There wasn't enough control.
