Herbert was a 2x National Champion at Northwestern and in 2009 won the Dan Hodge trophy. In that same year Herbert won the World Team Trials and represented the United States in Denmark at the World Championship where he took silver. In 2010 Herbert once again won the World Team Trials, but this time went 0-1 at the World Championships. In 2011, 4x NCAA champion and 2004 Olympic champion Cael Sanderson returned and defeated Herbert in the World Team Trial finals. After Sanderson decided not to wrestle in 2012 the weight was once again Herberts, and at the Olympic trials he defeated Travis Paulson to earn his spot on the 2012 Olympic team.
