I also remember that guy from NJ (Monico ?) talking about how to not teach kids moves, but rather teach them to remain in position through out the penetration step and take what is there. I think he was taking that from Russian philosophy. I tried to teach that in our youth club...it took about 3 years to get kids to think that way. The younger ones that I started on it right away are progressing faster than anyone, because they understand position first, then what move to apply second. It is very hard to instruct this way, because kids and parents will complain that you aren't showing them anything. Kids want to have a list of named moves that they can say they do.

Check Hrovat blog on FLO 12 months ago

Fwiw, I remember reading an Andy Hrovat blog entry awhile back he lived & trained in Russia. He was surprised at the approach Russians typically took with their drilling & warm-ups... Some of the very same stuff commented here. Think he claimed they paid very little attention to their stance and set-ups- to the point where they would literally just walk in upright and grab a high single / hi-c... But they'd spend 100% of their time focusing on proper positioning THRU the penetration / finish. Hips underneath, shoulder alignment, hand placement, all other positioning details to finish their attacks had a much greater importance in their drilling than any particular set-up.

Have you every seen a Kuduhkov match? He does not stop moving his hands and feet. Constantly attacks. He leaves you nothing to be encouraged about. Then on top of all that offense, I've never seen him get taken down.

Studied that misdirection at 0:16 about 100 times. I used to think it was about the feet, but I think it is the feel he gives with his hands that sets it up so well....comments/suggestions?

I think that a wrestlers warmup is indicative of their training habits. If I was his competitor I would be encouraged, because I would be confident that deep in the match, if he was made to work and I was stingy with points he would be very vulnerable. Just like, B Satiev was against Slay. Americans look up to the Russian wrestlers too much and give them too much respect. Personally, I think their strengths are their weaknesses.

actually this isnt a lazy warm up at all. watch all of the russian/european matches. most of them dont have low stances witht their knees bent. they stand straight and bend in the back. however odd that may be for us americans it seems to work for them

0:16. Best mis-direction I have ever seen

Im not really sure I understand the comments below. First off - he's a world champion. To scrutinize his warm-up or his routine is to analyze a 4x world champion and Olympic Bronze medalist a rare accomplishment. Secondly, its what works for him and it obviously has paid off ..in spades! Thirdly, the point of this film is neither that of glorification or to impress but to show a incredible athlete before his finals match. Literally an intimate moment- that of focus and flow. Do yourself a favor and show your athletes this and them list his credentials!

This is a final warm up before the gold medal match, Kudukhov has already wrestled several times :He doesn't need to do a hard, strenuous warm up at this point

guy below me 12 months ago

your opinion is wrong, there are many ways to warmup. not everyone needs to get their heart rate up.look it up.

Anonymous Coward 12 months ago

Personally, I would never show this to one of my wrestlers. This is one of the laziest warmups I have seen. If I saw my wrestlers warming up like this I would be pissed! Out of their stance the entire warm up, didn't finish one shot, probably didn't get their heart rate up at all. No doubt they are are both great wrestlers, but this is definitely not the model warmup and should not be glorified, in my opinion.

They are such the consummate technicians. Every moves flow so easily. they may not have the athletes that the US has, but there technical ability is off the charts. Great for young wrestlers to watch...

this is easily the most insightfull video on Flo.

I feel so inadequate as a wrestler when I watch this...barely trying, but so slick.

Anonymous Coward 12 months ago

it looks like the guy he wrestled in the semi-finals...Ampar
