The 3 dorks of wrestling huddle in their nerdery debating the tough topics in wrestling. Todays debate asks the question, Should wrestlers continue competing in singlets or move to the fight short?

keep the singlets. personally, i don't really want to see heavyweights shirtless.. sorry. & if you're a true wrestler, you probably could care less what you're wearing because you're tough enough to handle the insecurities, talk, etc. wrestlers can handle anything. KEEP THE SINGLETS. |

both for sure

Look at grapplers (let alone sambo, judo and jiu jitsu practitioners). They have fight shorts and compression shirts. So why not have it in wrestling? It doesn't make any sense unless you're old traditionalist. And if that's the case then you must zip it cuz its 2000 freaking 12. we don't live in 1900s Things change and besides, its gonna happen sooner and later as far as I'm concerned. So I say make it happen now. |

My oldest son wouldn't wrestle. Even though the HS coach begged him to. Nothing I done would change his mind. All of his friends where wrestlers, but he wouldn't join. Later in life he told me it was because of Singlets. As a freshman he hadn't developed as much as other boys his age, so he was embarrased. Do not underestimate the power of self conciousness. There are a lot of good athletes avoiding the sport because of singlets. My youngest has been wrestling for 5 years, hes starting to go through puberty. He is very self concious and trys to get very loose singlets that don't show too much in that area. |

I coach a youth program and wouldn't mind to change to fight shorts with a rash shirt. You either learn to keep defending yourself about wearing them or make it more appealing to more youth and high school wrestlers which in return would be a real WIN for the sport of wrestling. Things and styles change, adapt to it. Give the kids an option of either one. |

if you are a wrestler and an athlete you grow up with the singlet....it is the uniform...these kids arent mma fighters...this also keeps down on diseases and contains the sweat....these kids are "wrestling".....they arent kicking and punching....they are technigue wrestlers.....chubby kids will feel naked....stay with tradition....and any boy or girl on the wrestling team, joins to wrestle and they know what they will be wearing...if you are embarrassed DONT WRESTLE.....so what do you expect kids to wear on the top? they are kids not grown men and mma fighters....get real please...these are under 18 minors we are talking about |

Well seeing that wrestling is an international sport, whether or not the USA believes fight shorts are better really does not matter. Good luck trying to explain to countries like Ukraine or Russia that we are getting rid of singlets and will be wearing shorts instead......... |

Singlets should still be the norm for tournament or competative events. At large events suck as NUWAY or MYWAY you have at times 300 plus kids wrestling on these mats, therefore after how many matches are the mats not clean enough where a person can pick up ringworm. Comparing MMA to wrestling is not an option as most of wrestling is on the ground, going body to body with a competitor who could have wrestled several times not knowing if the person sanitized as to where MMA is limited to 1 match. |

I Have been wrestling since i was 7 years old I don't want to wear fight shorts to a match the singlet is like an identity. football has jerseys but we have singlets. there is a big difference between MMA and wrestling. I have a lot of friends that do MMA and they don't mind wearing singlets so why should we change it???? My dad would slap me in the face if i even thought about wearing a Fight short to a match Singlets are only for wrestlers period. anyone who doesn't like it then they are not true men. Singlets are for true warriors. |

I'm a coach of middle and high school age kids. It would be much easier to recruit kids if they did not have to wear singlets. Most kids I talk to would wrestle if they could wear shorts and a tight shirt. I think that could be the answer to increase our numbers. Uniforms change as time changes. I had to wear a 3 piece uniform when I wrestled. Lets make a big push. |

I'd rather not see a heavyweight, 285 pound man, in just fight shorts personally |

I think the compression shirt and short combo could help some insecure boys on the fence about wrestling give it a go. But I think the opposite approach could work too. And maybe a two pronged approach is needed to get more people interested in wrestling. My suggestion would be to contact the clothing manufacturer's like UA, Nike etc. and get them to promote the use of singlets in other sports and even for casual wear around town after a workout at the gym. But I would draw the line at the hooded type singlet that Track and Field star Michael Johnson wore at the Olympics. Maybe once and for all we can get rid of all these gay looking guys on the basketball courts wearing those gay things that go below their knees that they think are shorts but we all know are really just girly capri pants? |

you guys are funny. Years of years of tradition with singlets. And thx to MMA wrestling with out siglets?. you kidding me? In ancient Greece wrestle for thousands of years naked!!! And still now in Turkey wrestle on open stadiums with oil on. Well, Wrestling should be only with bottom. that's it. But, looks better with siglets. |

OKay.. but Professional TV wrestling is immensely popular and they wear tights. Singlets work because they do not hamper movement. End of story. Any time two guys are rolling around on a mat with their hands and heads in compromising positions some macho man is going to scream GAY. It doesnt matter what they are wearing. |

I have coached for a while from high school to 5 year olds and wrestled for many years. There are 2 main reasons people see wrestling as "gay" sport. Number 1 its to much work or to hard for them to do so they use that excuse. The other is they do not understand the sport if we could educate kids and parents and get them to better understand our sport it would grow. So in short the singlet is an excuse not a problem no fight short. |

So, in reading what everyone has to say the only real argument that fight shorts advocates has is appeal to a newer and larger crowd of athletes. However, I haven't seen anyone offer anything but anecdotal proof.Good point Brandon. I think we could easily poll kids at the youth level all the way through High School. Take a whole classroom and have them show them with a person in a cool Iowa singlet and have them show them a person with an iowa version fight short and cool Iowa spandex shirt and ask them if they are more likely to participate in one sport or another. We absolutely would have to study it before we do it. |

I think the time has come to move away from singlets. I like the idea of fight shorts with rash guards. The idea of athletes competing shirtless is not a good idea. It would make it harder to grip an opponent is many positions, and it would not look good. Part of me hates the idea of breaking from the tradition of singlets, but they are outdated, and an obstacle to the growth of the sport. It would take a little getting used to, but the success of the sport is not dependent on singlets. |

I agree with everyone in regards that wrestling is losing a following ect ect and the numbers are dropping due to stigma's and so on, but in regards to the fight short situation I believe an equal median can be met. |

Singlet's today are nowhere near as bad as they looked in the 1970's or 1980's. Today's singlets are more like vale tudo / bike shorts with an armless shirt. MMA board shorts are problematic, I've seen feet get caught up in the bottom legs of them, and they can cause extra traction on the ground which can make hip slides, sitouts etc more difficult than it needs to be. |

I want us wrestlers to start wearing those cute little swimming shorts, those speedo shorts that those hot Olympic guys wear. I would come to practice early and stay late everyday if we wore those. Just imagine Brent Metcalf wrestling in a speedo....soooooo hot. I think we would attract more people to the sport if we wore speedos. And definitely a different kind of crowd would come. Pretty girls would come to check out Steve Mocco's wild belly flop over his little pink swimsuit singlet, and the boys would come to check out Brent Metcalf's six pack as he flexes in anger over losing a match, that point just before he explodes and goes crazy. Soooo hot. We could attract people to the sport by having guys like Burroughs and Varner walk around high schools in speedos to try to promote the sport. My 2 cents. |

only fat and out-of-shape people call singlets gay because that's what they see in the mirror, they rather hide their insecure self in clothes |

Singlets instead of shirsts and shorts, not because of tradition but, because shirts interfere with technique. I don't want a shirt riding up or pulling on my arm pits. Singlets are also better for practice. Numbers are dropping because wrestlng is one of the toughest sports ever. Name one high school sport that is harder. Some might be hard but not the same as wrestling. Most of them are much easier and someone else can be blamed for a loss. In wrestling it's one on one, no one else to blame. Another problem with the numbers dropping is that to many kids would prefer to sit on their butts and play video games in fantasy land instead of actually living. |
