After many close attempts at making a world or olympic team and falling just short, Jared Frayer took out Brent Metcalf to make the 2012 Wrestling Olympic Team. The series with Brent Metcalf was particularly dramatic as Metcalf beat Frayer in the 2010 Trials to make the team in a tough decision. Jared Frayer, 2012 wresling Olympic Trials champion.

Dear Mr Frayer I am an avid wrestling fan and i had the pleasure of seeing you hit that throw in Time Square, as well i have a good friend who has a daughter with Down Syndrome , she is such a beautiful child and brings out so much from everyone she encounters. At this time i want to wish you and your family all the best through your Olympic journey, you are a great representative for the U.S.

66 K to bad for USA... 1 year ago

I love Frayer and Metcalf. But unfortunately, it doesn’t matter who we send because we don’t stand a chance. 66K is ridiculous! Olympic champ (TUR), two world champs IRI and IND, and 2008 Olympic Silver medalist (UKR) that has beaten all of them during the last cycle. I hope that a miracle happens and Frayer medals but after watching World Champ Shushil Kumar at Schultz this year I would say that hope is wishful thinking.

Class Act. I see the flag in him. Seeing Jamil Kelly in his corner was awesome.

Metcalf and Ware are great...lots of respect for the dudes. But seriously, neither of them could win one match at the world championships. Let's stand behind Frayer. He can get the job done. The other dudes had their chance...

5-2 against Metcalf? You're talking about a guy who was in college until a couple of years ago versus someone who's been out of college a lot longer. It took Cael Sanderson longer than that after college to ever win a freestyle tournament. Recent activity counts for more.
Having said that, we don't have a great medal chance at this weight. Frayer is as good as any of them. He earned it on the mat in Iowa City. It's his spot. Case closed.

That was supposed to be Bill Za in the last post (not Bill Za)

The qualifier was March 22-25, and here's what Brent did:
66 kg/145.5 lbs. – Brent Metcalf, Iowa City, Iowa (New York AC) – 2nd
WIN Elvis Fuentes (Venezuela), 3-0, 4-0
WIN Edison Hurtado Lerma (Colombia), 2-0, fall 0:43
LOSS Haislan Garcia (Canada), 0-1, 0-3

So, he wrestled 3 matches (all 2 periods, one with a pin = 10min 43 seconds of wrestling) 4 full weeks before the trials. I'm pretty sure that is not the reason he wasn't "fresh and rested".
Someone mentioned in a previous post that no one in this weight class has done anything since Bill Za won Worlds in 2006, and they're right. Brent Metcalf and Teyon Ware went 0-1 at Worlds the last 2 years, respectively. Considering Jared is 5-2 vs Metcalf and beaten Ware the last few times they've wrestled (I don't know his all time record against him), he deserves the shot he's earned. Let's get behind him. Maybe he doesn't medal... it won't be any different than the other guys representing the US the last 6 years, and then he'll retire, and Metcalf will have his shot again.

Frayer beat Teyon and Metcalf, he deserves it and I'll def be rooting for him. Class act!

I have mixed feelings. Metcalf qualified the weightclass. That should count for something in the equation of who goes to London. That may have cost him the olympic berth as the qualifyer was pretty recent and perhaps Frayer was more fresh and rested for the trials. Metcalf looked bad at the trials....like someone who was overtrained. I hate to say this but Frayer is unlikely to medal in London. The only USA guys who have a chance are those that dominate here (Burroughs, Varner, Dlagnev).

People saying that frayer is a better freestyler, except he hasn't won anything in freestyle internationally.

That was pretty well said

Frayer is definitely the right man for the job. Metcalf, bless his heart, he's so dedicated to the sport but he's more of a folkstyle wrestler. Frayer is a real freestyler.

Frayer is now 5-2 against Metcalf and Frayer's style is better suited for international competition, his front head/chest locks are the best in the business and he can turn anyone with them, he is highly motivated and will be in great shape, Iowa fans need to get over Metcalf losing, they are not going to "pick" him over Frayer, Jared earned it and he is going to London. Let's get behind all of our guys and bring some medals home.

The U.S. hasn't had much success at this weight in recent history. I think Bill Zad.ick in 2006 was the last time we were competitive here. Both Ware and Metcalf had a shot, now it's time for someone else. Frayer will get the job done.

Frayer is the man! 1 year ago

I agree with arm-spin...Metcalf hasn't been so consistent in freestyle. He has a couple wins over good guys, but not when it counts. I do think Frayer has a better shot because he is wrestling pure freestyle. Metcalf looks like he's still stuck in folkstyle, trying to force that to work. Well, occasionally you might get a win with that approach, but it won't pull you through to medal at a World or Olympic championship.

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

im sorry, is beating metcalf not proving yourself, what more is there to prove, metcalf was beaten clearly by Frayer, way to go Jared. Florid.....

arm-spin 1 year ago

Metcalf has beaten some good guys, but not consistently. Frayer has just as good a shot at an Olympic medal.

Metcalf is still making the smae technical mistakes In his own interview onthemat, he mentions shooting from too far out with his "ass up" and getting countered. This has been an issue for him throughout his fs career.

I wrestled frayer in high school, i will take a lost from an olympic team member any time. represnt the pinellas county. you should of been a packer...

Metcalf didn't wrestle worlds last year, teyon did lost to stadnik in the first round, burroughs won ukraine memorial beating the 2011 european silver medalist and beat geduev(russian number 2/3) at the dual in times square, so burroughs proved he could win internationally. I say wait until after the world cup to decide as frayer will most likely have to wrestle one of the best russians, taghavi(world champ), lopez again(world bronze medalist), hasanov, stadnik etc. if he gets handled send metcalf.
