what have any of you who posted on here done? did he make personal mistake and let his weight get out of control, obviously, but to act as though he is a piece of for not making the weight is just ridiculos, he has nothing to prove to anyone but himself. take a look in the mirror before you talk about someone whose trying to get back on track. |

I've posted numerous times over the years - but I did not post the message below under the name "Cooper". I guess anyone can copy any name and use it - even if unintentional. I don't agree with those comments. The fact that Gardner did what he did to get to the point of almost making weigh is a testament to his drive and what got him those Olympic medals in 2000 and 2004. Would have liked to see him compete to see how he would have done. Great story and an inspiration. |

If he hadn't got up to almost 500, he wouldn't have to lose it all. It was his lifestyle choices that caused him to weigh so much. It was also his decision to go out in terrible weather. He is responsible for his life. |

He quit because he is a quitter...he quit because he is a shell of the man that beat the great Russian in the olympic finals.no one has the right to call an olympic gold medalist a quitter. one of the finest wrestlers in the history of the united states (two olympic medals) deserves the respect of anyone involved with the sport, and using language like that is plain disrespectful. |

Did I just hear that right? Did the guy who gave up on making weight at the Olympic Trials with only 5 pounds to go (if you believe that) just say that he hopes he can help to bring back the mystique of intensity and hard work to the USA Greco team?? Seriously?? Is this a joke? Did he really say that his body was telling him to slow down? Isn't the definition of mental toughness and hard work the ability to ignore your body when it tells you to slow down? Seriously!? |

I can tell you why he quit, and it won't take 22 minutes to read. He quit because he is a quitter...he quit because he is a shell of the man that beat the great Russian in the olympic finals. He quit the biggest loser, he didn't show up for the finale, and he didn't put the work into getting down to weight for this tournament. Did he not think he had what it takes to be competitive...could he just not stop eating... Only he knows, but what we all know is that the glorious story of Rulon has a terrible final chapter. 5-6 pounds over? No way...more like 30. |
