Ernie Ciaccio was a big part of helping to get organize a large group of wrestlers from California to come to Flonationals. SCWAY paid a good chunk of the costs to get all of the kids across the country, most kids paid $200 for the trip.

USA Wrestling burns through millions and millions of dollars each year (tax-free) as one can confirm at (for example):

dynamodata.fdncenter.org/990_pdf_archive/362/362667348/362667348_201008_990.pdf
That link's available by performing a search at:
charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=847
That doesn't even include money that goes to its state organizations.

USA Wrestling's expenditures breakdown is explored here in greater detail:

Robert Valerio, i don't know why he is so arrogant when he was only a stat keeper for Madera High school. Running a freestyle tournament in the Central Section when Valerio was in charge was a joke. Valerio and his crew would take all the money because tney ran the bout room, which was why the tournament ran so bad and the only way we could make any money was through the snack bar.

Isn't it noteworthy how USA Wrestling apparently doesn't maintain transparency where its vast revenues are concerned? They're not even profiled at:

CharityNavigator.Org
How well does USA Wrestling cope with profiteers within its organization? Profiteers plague most large organizations, but those which cope better with them remain more true to their core missions. Perhaps competition among organizations can empower reformers in all of them, for the good of wrestling overall? NuWay has its potential appeal...

ca-usaw rob valerio and duane morgan have 100k of coach deliddo and the takedown club's funds from fresno state wrestling boosters. Fresno state gave it to them when they dropped the program and while most everyone would agree they should have gave it back to deliddo and the takedown club they have no legal obligation to do so. Deliddo is good friends with joe seay and art martori so he hasnt went public with the info however he won't deny it if asked.
I don’t know everything but I know several families in the high double and low triple digits have received thousands of dollars in aid over the last two years. My family has saved a grand or so alone. A lot of these kids are in a tough spot because they want to go to fargo and compete for national titles but they have no allegiance to our state association and the cost is absurd like 1500 bucks. Part of me can’t understand why the same guys that run scway are not in charge of usaw in ca but then again they probably wouldn’t want it anyways as they have a good thing going.
I will say scway has caused ca-usaw to get a little better as far as event management , opening matrix for state events, weigh ins and other things but they lose points for doing it after the fact in my eyes. Once huge events like frosh soph state have now been killed by competing scway events and next year the kids event is scheduled to be on the same day as well.

WTF is going on with CA wrestling? Can someone please explain the money - who owes what? who stole what? etc.. Very confusing to understand who's blaming whom?

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

is this really true? how have they kept this quiet? why would they not have given him the money after they got it or just cut him a check from there own funds to avoid any legal issues?

bobp 1 year ago

is this really true? how have they kept this quiet? why would they not have given him the money after they got it or just cut him a check from there own funds to avoid any legal issues? either way if this is true it is a travesty and a story flowrestling should be exposing. If this is the kind of leadership that our ngb is employing at the state level than changes need to be made.

THAT REALLY SUX

they stole it 1 year ago

We already know they stole the fresno state money. They have been telling Coach D they are going to give it back for two years. Just stringing him along so he doesnt tell the wrestling media what they did. I know the story first hand FSU after they canceled the wrestling emptied out the takedown club account and cut a check to usaw under the premise they agreed not to give it to coach Deliddo or the boosters. God forbid he might use that money to lobby the media or politicians to put pressure on the university to reinstate it. So Rob and Duane take the money and what do they do? They keep it instead of giving it to Dennis to let him return it to boosters or use it to fund the fight to reinstate. That is causaw teaming up with the same people killing college wrestling.

building scam 1 year ago

causaw arena project is comedy central. Lets see first they were gonna get grants, than they brought in some venture capital firm from mexico, now they have angel investors blahblahblah. these guys are all talk no one is doing business with these guys to the tune of a hundred million large. These guys are so arrogant they can barely run a wrestling event and now they are going to manage rock concerts and a hotel. The sad part is the national office just stands by and watches. Rob and Duane still owe Dennis Deliddo 100k which is what they have left in the bank after buying mats, clocks and trailers. I don't even want to tell you how they got Deliddo's fresno state booster money it will make you sick

Being an OH guy, I'm having a hard time understanding the CA poltics. I dont know Mr. Ciaccio but it seems to me he's doing some very positive things for CA wrestling. Raising money, investing in programs and talking about wanting to increase college wrestling. Olympic type training centers.

Mr. Ciaccio talking about growing wrestling & promoting CA wrestling as a whole sounds like music to a wrestling fan's ears. I wish you success Mr. Ciaccio! Wrestling needs people to promote and want to grow the sport. If it dies in CA then it weakens the whole country.
Good Luck Mr. Ciaccio!!!!

The USAW Leadership in California is so corrupt its not funny. And the shear arrogance of Dwayne Morgan is off the charts. USW wrestling charging kids 40 bucks for qualifier tournaments, plus 40 for a card is insane. then the top kids have to pay 2000 bucks plus traveling to the other side of the state (by car or plane)to catch a flight to go to nationals is crazy. Then the money to get a coach certified and back ground checked (which i dont think organizers are back ground checked even though they are around kids).
There are a set of twins in California whos parents have to pay double for everything and USAW cut them a break on only 1 tournament the entire year and these kids are some of the top in the country.
Bottom line is USAW especially in California does NOTHING to help promote the sport and even less to help kids.

the usaw guys are so arrogant they use the term byway or amway to degrade the leadership of another wrestling organization. wont be long untill they are gone just like aau went bye bye thank goodness. Tick Tock

usaw in ca is a horrible organization. next week look at how many scway singlets are at reno worlds my boy is proud to rep scway as they know him and make him feel like they care through the trips and events.

The talk of putting "more money back into wrestling" is just a NUWAY slogan. Where do you think the USAW money goes? Isn't funding training of Olympic hopefuls, training sites, international trips for Fila junior teams, themat.tv, usawrestlingnation.com, the coaches core curriculum (great stuff!), USA Wrestler magazine, and so on ALL putting money back into wrestling? Yes there is overhead with the national organization, but who wants 50 states doing their own thing completely independent of the others. I have to admit I don't know what % of the budget goes there.

CA-USAW had about 17,000 members last year and the cards are $35 according to the website. That is a total of just under $600,000. Of that about $350,000 went to the national office for the above programs and insurance. The insurance costs are REAL. USAW is basically self-insured so their costs match what is paid out to wrestlers/members in CLAIMS! The remaining $250,000 stayed in CA-USAW. How that was spent is a legitimate question. I don't live there and don't know what they do. looks like they have big plans for an arena which could bring a lot of outside money into the organization long term.
What are SCWAY membership fees and what is covered with that? The video talks specifically about we are going to ask parents to dig into their pockets to give us money to help fund these activities. How is that different than charging for a membership or tournament? The fact is nothing happens without money. I do agree there can be a big difference in opinions on what money should be spent on once you have it.
Background checks - those are in place because members asked for them and insurance companies DEMAND them. In today's society you just have to have them. Yes it is very frustrating that they aren't shared. That is not a USAW problem though. Even if you have FBI clearance, the Boy Scouts, Pony League baseball, Pop Warner football, school systems will all still require you to have the check they use. If SCWAY doesn't have a check they will soon enough.

Why doesn't NuWay have a Texas branch set up? TxWay would have a nice ring to it, wouldn't it?

Calidad...Davis was cut right at the point SCWAY was initializing their movement. A wee bit tough to get their own program started and save Davis. + Davis admin promised L Zalesky there would be no worries about their program staying in place, sure enough, they cut it the following season. Regardless of what people could have done Davis' admin was cutting that program. No if's about it. Very similar at Fullerton. They gave Coach Hicks, a pure stud at promoting a program a # to fundraise to, $400K or something. Fullerton stated they would allow Hicks to include the $ he earned from his team camps, as well add that to the donated funds. Nope, they revised an said AFTER that the funds raised from camps weren't going to be added, so he was short. Kinda like making up a whiffle ball rule after the play already took place. More or less dong everything they could to cut it. It was a no win battle. Even if it was raised, with their actions it would have been cut. So no fault to any organization, CAUSAW or SCWAY for not being able to help..and both tried. I'm a firm believer in USAW, but in recent years it's being proven time and time again, this is a MASSIVE profit making organization and that's the focus. No big deal b/c that's why you get into business, to make some loot SCWAY and ERnie have a different focus, amazing growth and support of CA wrestling. I believe there are a few colleges that could re-introduce programs here in a lil bit: UCLA and SJSU, as well Cal Baptist is moving up a division as their team is getting better and better as the years go by. Stanford is intact and I think could be the OTC Ernie mentions. This movement is not polar opposite of USAW, but I believe USAW needs to embrace their approach b/c if 70 kids can rip across country and represent our state in fine form, phew!, that's just got to be embraced. I run a silly lil high school program, my asst just left to create a middle school program which we hope will give rise to a middle school league in our area as one does not exist. The grass roots, hard work movement must be embraced. And this does not even need to impact our Nation's F/s skills b/c as you can see, Jordan Burroughs took home a WC gold with ONE freestyle match in his entire career. These 2 organizations can continue to spark the re-birth of CA college programs. The same questions can be stated about why CA-USAW didn't save Fresno St. Fresno is the absolute hotbed of CA and there are annually 30 kids that graduate HS in the area who could easily have landed on a FSU roster and continued wrestling. That was over a decade ago and if SCWAY is implicated as somehow at fault for losing Davis and CSUF, why isn't CA-USAW held in same regard for losing FSU? FSU produced Abas and now CP Coach Buckley, that should be enough, but $$$ kept CA USAW's focus. And again...I've got my own USAW club, and am a fellow coach on a local club, SCWAY is sure doing it's part to lure me that's for sure.

California spends a million bucks on just usaw cards a year, add background checks, tournament fees, parking and gate fees to support seilland arena and five dollar waters and your at likely double that number. No one has a clue where that money goes every year they publish financials that tell you nothing while the athlete and parent recieves nothing. My son pays nearly fourteen hundred dollars if he wants to go to fargo other than that they offer nothing. Scway has been supporting athletes from day one. I hope they do take over the freestyle. I have heard the scway guys say they could do fargo for $300 a kid. It is becoming painfully obvious that one group with twenty five percent of the revenue is making five and six times the impact of usaw in california. The leadership of usaw in ca is really bad. All they do is copy scway and the result is a cheap imitation as they do not copy the reinvest back into the kids part but rather just event concepts.

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

How will SCWAY dominate at the world level when they don't even do freestyle. SCWAY is doing alot of great things for California wrestler but it is also hurting freestyle wrestling. In this economy people are choosing to wrestle in SCWAY than in freestyle wrestling. Why, it's alot cheaper to wrestle SCWAY than is to wrestle usaw meets for wrestlers, coaches and parents. USAW is killing themselves with chargng everyone for everything. I love freestyle wrestling but Robert Valero you and the upper management are killing the style for all of us.
I don't understand why a coach that has been coaching for 30 years, that has FBI clears need a background every two years, a Bronze card and annual usaw coaches card just to coach. That crazy.

Raymond Chavez 1 year ago

I would love to see a college from California dominate like they do in high school. There have been so many great wrestlers that come from California and win National titles and it would be nice to see them stay in their home state.

@ Cali dad I believe Davis was gone before SCWAY was established, as for Fullerton I believe they donated some money.

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

so making team nj weigh in at the airport is equal to not having cali weigh in at all? Got ya...Going to take me some time to wrap my head around that.

nj 1 year ago

if i remember right they got beat up by the central valley all stars and nj who weighed in at the airport early was still unhappy. As a result those guys in year two made refs do official weigh ins and now in year three the event has 32 teams.

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

yea that move left a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of Nj folk. prob wont ever see them set anything up with ernie again.
