The situation at the end is a tough call. I'd say the ref was correct, and that's how I would have called it when I was a referee. The thing to keep in mind is that in folkstyle a takedown means you establish control. Oliver couldn't advance his position -- or if he could, he simply didn't try. His head was buried in Stieber's crotch, and he was unable to go anywhere. Thus it was a stalemate. Simple. As a matter of fact, the more I watch that part of the match, the more I am sure the ref made the right call. I've been watching this with some new refs to help train them...we are all in accord on this one. |

If the ref doesn't call it, it doesn't count. Sorry life isn't fair. |

i agree with wow under me...

i always thought oliver won that match..to me hes a two timer..that was a takedown..even the stupid ncaa announcers knew it, its so hard to watch a kid who works so hard (not saying steiber doesnt work just as hard) get screwed over a crappy non call..looked like two watching it live..still looks like two |

i cant believe this still isnt talked about..watching it again i dont know how the ref didnt give two..the ankles were covered..its a takedown in college everyone knows it..if that was in the beginning of the period or in a different situation easily two..the ref simply ed out and didnt want to have to make a call |

Great job Stieber! He dictated the pace of the match and carried out his gameplan very well. JO didnt just all of the sudden stop wrestling on his feet, he was STOPPED by Stiebers superior defense. He wasnt allowing JO any good looks and couldnt get by his hands. Stieber was the better wrestler on this day in this match, no question about it. Those who believe otherwise need a reality check. Stieber is and always will be the 2013 NCAA national champ. If JO wants to finish his senior year with a championship, i suggest he move up to 141. If he were to beat Stieber in finals it was this year n he didnt get it done, Stieber will mature even more by next season and be untouchable. |

J.O won that match, stieber wasn't even in the ball park of a take down late in the 1st. I can't even see where u could make the argument that the ref made a bad call there. J.O's takedown in the first is obious, there should be no debate there. Stiebers takedown in the second.."no debate there". J.o had control of the legs, Stieber was flat on his but not advancing his position. that was a 2 point take down.. clear as day to me. |

Watching this from home and taking out the magnitude of the situation at the time, the end feels totally different. The ref made a great call in not giving him the two |

Had to check this out because so many friends have been asking about his. The scramble at the end looks like a stalemate, so the ref was correct; that's exactly how I would have called it. Now let's look at the other questionable calls: the ref might have given Oliver the takedown at the 2:48 mark in first period a bit too quickly, but it could go either way. Steiber almost had a takedown toward the end of the period, but Oliver fled the mat. Just a comment here: Collegiate style has gotten so subjective over the years -- the refs have a lot of say in a match. Not really the case in freestyle....much more objective. Another thing: let's get the pushout rule. I hate to see Oliver jump out of bounds to avoid a takedown after Stieber did all that work. Nothing against Oliver -- he's just playing by the rules. So we gotta change the rules. Too much "edge wrestling" in folkstyle, and it's boring and annoying to officiate. |

As a wrestling official, some of these calls in this tournament were quite terrible. The takedown call in the first was too quick. The ref said "hand on the mat", well then why didn't he award the same thing later in the match for the same exact position in the 2nd period?. I saw both hands on the mat for the same amount of time as the first period. As far as the scramble at the end of the match, I have seen that position many times and Oliver did not improve from having nothing above the knees. All he had to do was put an arm around steiber's waist and I would have awarded two. Good job in asking the assistant what he saw before giving final decision. Overall bad job by this ref in this final though. |

Wow. The first time i have ever seen a retraction like the one CaliCoachN has given. My hat is off to you sir for sseing the error of your ways. Can't wait to watch Stieber wrestle the next three years. God luck Logan on your quest to wrestle in the olympics as well. |

After watching this particular match a handful of times I'd like to re-evaluate some of my aforementioned impetuous assertions. Stieber* was primarily the aggressor for the majority of the match and Stieber did in fact have a takedown that was not given to him. It's plausible to say that Stieber proved to be the superior wrestler in this match. He was quicker and stronger than his counterpart and I apologize for stirring the pot. Congratulations Mr. Stieber you have as many national titles as Mr. Oliver. |
