Dan Gable hits a number of topics in this video. He starts off by answering the technique vs conditioning question and gets into various other points of talking. He would like to see wrestling have a bigger presence at the world level and always wants to do more for the sport.

Aaron Aure, The Magrum Brothers ( Waterloo), A kid named Willy ( sorry its been a while),all mid 80's to early 90's... theses are just the kids that I recall I am sure that there were many more wrestlers of color in the Iowa wrestling room.

No one is complaining about most top D1 basketball team are 90% non-white. The numbers are balanced if you add up all the sports in your school

"Gable Shame Pt. 3", since you are against discrimination, would you care to comment on all the institutionalized discrimination chronicled at CEOUSA.org ?

Living Legend, thank you. That was probably the best response to the hateful and baseless accusations below.

Living Legend. 1 year ago

Gable is truly an American Hero and an a living legend! Amazing he still can get fired about the Sport. Just listen to his words and you can clearly tell he could care less about color but more so about work ethic, agressiveness and most importantly CHARACTER. If he seems racist it's probably because he is part of that rare breed called CHAMPION that never stop striving for excellence. Great Interview.

Race Card 1 year ago

Seriously some people just can't wait to drop it. I was coached by Gable and have been around him a lot for the last 20 years. I have also been around plenty of racists. Gable is not a racist.

Gable's Shame pt. 2 1 year ago

Some of these counter arguments are specious at best. Comparing Wrestling to the NHL is the height of lunacy. NCAA wrestling seems to have issues that are Non-existent at the Olympic Team Level. Yet given the incredibly small pool of Black Wrestlers, their success is quite amazing.

Someone mentioned Mena, but what about the Dellagatta situation. I understand the attempts to deny this awful truth of the Great Hero of this sport, but sometimes the truth his ugly. Remember this did not have to be an issue. When you factor in the stereotypical viewpoint that Gable seems to invoke during this interview, it's hard to come away with anything other than this assertion.
A little bit of intellectual honesty is needed here. This is not an issue for Brands, because he simply wants to win. Gable is not alone with his agenda, I would submit J. Robinson as well. What's my point of this post. Well let's just say, Wrestling needs to expand it's base.
For as much as Gable contributed to the sport, he also diminished his accomplishments. He lost to Douglas, he lost to a High School kId, and maybe he's bitter. I wouldn't label Gable as a racists, but his actions parallel a person whom most would deem to be racist. Gable created this situation, I am merely calling him out. Shame on Gable, Shame, Shame.

'ism and more 'ism... 1 year ago

If Coach Gable had behaved with his trademarked intensity while blessing out an African-American wrestler who wasn't living up to his perceived potential, would he have been called racist? Or dedicated? I don't think insta-deleting in forums is the answer to the "ism" problem that will persist as long as folks can sue regarding it either in courts or via the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. I think open debate is healthy for a society as ethnically diverse as our own. The truth usually finds its way to the top of the pile. If anyone can handle the heat and show us how best to handle it, it's Coach Dan Gable. Kudos to those who decided NOT to delete any of these posts, in my humble opinion.

Mike Mena was a 4X All-American at Iowa and of Hispanic origin. Trizzino brothers were Italian and both had great careers at Iowa under Gable.

I guess the NHL is racist too, not enough blacks in hockey. The NHL says they are not racists, but their ethnic stats tell another story. Then again, I think the NBA practices reverse racism. Not enough short white guys in the upper echelons of that sport. And just look at the way that golf held the likes of Tiger Woods back. That poor guy never got his chance at the spotlight. Life is so unfair, and it's demons like Dan Gable that work behind the scenes to hold the black man down and make it even more so. Hey, did you hear the one about how Gable secretly helped the LAPD plan and finance the Rodney Kind beating?

Wow 1 year ago

Wow, what a thread. I guess I come down somewhere in the middle. What's the population of minority wrestlers in general. What are the program numbers at the other schools. How does Iowa State compare. How long did Gable Coach?

Maybe Gable has tried to recruit kids, and they just won't go there. What if Gable isn't racist, but his numbers tell another story. Ge'ez there's a lot here. Surely the number cannot be three in 20 years, lol. Not even one Hispanic. Any Jewish Kids ever wrestle for Gable?
I do recall hearing a few racists chants when Caldwell humiliated Metcalf, but that wasn't Gable's fault. I'd love to see a thread on themat.com plenty of Hawkeye fans would be able to defend the Icon.
Wowsers, what a thread.

Wrastler 150 1 year ago

I can't believe this turned into a "gable is racist" thread. I don't know Gable from a hole in the ground, but to make that assumption that he must be racist, by this one interview and his coaching past, seems to be a bit of a stretch.

I mean really, how many hispanics, black or whatever people are even wrestling overall? I know in some areas it it likely bigger than most places, due to the demographics of a town or area, but the percentage is probably really low. And how many of those kids are going to places like Fargo, NHSCA, FLO or wherever to challenge themselves and get recruited? How many are winning? Bottom line is, colleges are in the business of recruiting the best kids who fit their program and coaching styles and who the coaches feel will perform at their best. It is not their job to have affirmative action while recruiting. If a kid is good, they will end up at a program and do well, regardless if they are white, black, yellow, brown, red, purple, blue or the infamous green.
Here's a novel idea, watch the video, stick to the topic at hand and discuss that versus trying to turn this into some deep conspiracy about racism.

Unbelievable... In a sport where relationships extend beyond time someone tosses in the race card. What a fine way of rewarding those young men who have committed to a lifestyle of hardword without excuses. Coach Gable has never once turned my mexican, polish, italian butt away... Or any of the black kids that wrestle for me. You my friend are the SHAME

Problematic, If True 1 year ago

I'm not sure what Iowa State has to do with holding Gable accountable for actions. Nonetheless, at worse Gable has engaged in unethical perhaps even criminal behavior, at best it's troubling and morally repugnant. If those numbers are correct, then it's hard to defend Gable's conduct.

Iowa State has a history of wrestling that is inclusive and rich with the success stories which encompass every type of kid from every possible background. Including kids from Iowa.
It's worth noting that this is a non-issue at Nebraska, Oklahoma, Okie State. Come to think of it, I'd love to examine the numbers at Minnesota as well. I think Robinson is a Gable disciple. . . The NCAA is bereft of Black Wrestlers, yet at the Olympic Level it's almost 50 percent of the Team.
I find this interview extremely interesting because it gives you a glimpse into Gable's mentality in his own words. His description of Black Wrestlers is little more than a stereotypical viewpoint which is kind awful. So it wouldn't be a far leap to imagine his disdain resulting in some form of discriminatory or even hostility toward Italians, Blacks and Hispanics.
Perhaps the poster below is incorrect, and his analysis is flawed, political or motivated by some unknown variable. However, what if he's right. . . then what? You can never know what's in a man's heart, however you can still hold them accountable.

Cyclone of Candor 1 year ago

Are you surprised that that was posted? Such hypersensitivity has become the only way to keep the coaching staff intact in Ames at Gable's alma mater. Dan must not be trying hard enough to keep the present staff in power, so someone called him a racist on this page. Without such tactics, how else can one defend the status quo despite how history has been getting made recently in Ames?

tinyurl.com/74ncco8
*ISU just had its first season without an All-American since '62;
*And its first consecutive losing seasons since...ever.
*And its lowest placing at NCAA tourney since...ever.
*All presided over by a head coach whose U.S.A. Wrestling coaching tenure was apparently the least successful since.. ever.
*As for Cyclone wrestling fans, attendance has fallen by double-digit amounts since as recently as half a decade ago.
- I suppose the only way to defend the status quo is to change the focus to supposed "isms" instead of progress. Thus far it's working. But is it true that litigation's brewing among aspiring coaching candidates, especially after Coach Zalesky endured what he did in Iowa City half a decade ago while his Ames counterpart hasn't been held accountable, in ways that are scrutinized at ceousa.org ?

It's Iowa 1 year ago

Not like there is a huge diversity in Iowa, it's a rural state. Don't go criticize Gable and act stupid.

not_racist 1 year ago

If you are right about only 3 black wrestlers in 20 years I'll be impressed. I don't think Gable is a racist. He's from Iowa and I can't imagine there are tons of black people in Iowa or the midwest. Second, he did kind of find some "white" freaks from strange places in the US. I would say Gable was more into freaks than white or black people. Gable straight up wanted people completely obsessed with wrestling and only wrestling. Maybe for his time coaching he could only find white guys who were that mental. I'm not buying your argument. I bet he would comment on this because he talks a lot about stepping outside the sport and claims he didn't do enough of that coaching. I would say most black, italian, and other types of "ethnic" folks aren't too into the midwest or iowa anyway.

Hawks fan 1 year ago

How can anyone insinuate that Gable is a racist hater, when he devoted so much time to rehabilitating Montell Marion? It's not like there's a large African-American population in and near Iowa, especially one that is as committed to wrestling as one needs to be to join one of Gable's teams.

Gable's Shame 1 year ago

Read between the lines. The Stereotyping of the "Black Wrestler" is absolutely nauseating. Three Black Wrestlers in his 30 years at the helm. One of which he inherited, the other was the brother of a kid who picked Iowa because it was close to home.

Glad to know, "Black Wrestlers" just stand around lazy, shiftless, relying on pure athleticism to win matches albeit right at the end. If you look at the three Black Wrestlers that wrestled under him, I would say they turned out a little better than average. How can you criticize Campbell? How about Joe Williams, 3x Champ is a decent career. What about TJ, highest Winning Pct. in the program's history.
Gable's Agenda is truly a Black Eye for the sport. Shamefully, he's probably not even aware of his own bias, although I'm sure he's aware. He didn't have one hispanic wrestler under his watch. Gable was an equal opportunity hater, because I think he disliked Italians as well.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Deanna, Chiapparelli, and Melchiore. Not sure about Mocco. Long story short, Gable left himself open to criticism, but judging from this interview, it's pretty obvious. Did I mention the fact that among the "Black" Wrestlers this was pretty much well known and undisputed. Supposedly he recruited Carr, but. . .
Ask Bobby Douglas, off the record of course, and he'll tell you straight up. Maybe it's because a "Black" High School Kid beat him shortly after his Olympic Triumph. Wrestling's Greatest Icon is little more than a. . . Thankfully, Brands has changed the culture, and is motivated solely by winning.

Mike Moyer's time has passed. Find someone else who has a vision and can get stuff done. Everything else Gable said, I agreed with except about Moyer. Actions speak louder than words and all we get from Moyer is words.

And one person he didn't mention, was Dave Dean. That guy has done more for the sport of wrestling in the past several years, than most can say they've ever done combined.
