Eric Guerrero tells the story of when he wrestled Stephen Abas in a dual meet. The Oklahoma State wrestling team was wrestling two matches in central California in the same day. On the way to their second match at Fresno State the Oklahoma State team got lost and ended up showing up late to the match. Eric Guerrero didn't realize until the warm ups were going on that Stephen Abas was going to be moving up to wrestle him. Once he did realize that though, he immediately turned his mental state to where it needed to be. Eric Guerrero may not have had the idea trip to the venue, the idea warm up or mental preparation, but once he realized that he was going to be wrestling Stephen Abas he knew he had to get his head right and he ended up doing what it would take to overcome the circumstances and get the victory.

Abas the fans did go wild and that was want you and your brother brought to Fresno State wrestling. As an ex-Fresno State Fan and student (I have not been to Fresno State event since they cut the program) I salute you and your brother. Both of you are great wrestlers and people.

hey abas!! 1 year ago

Stephen Abas: any video of this match by any chance, sounds like a epic battle between two California legends?!

Well what had happened was...
I made weight then found out that Teague Moore wasn't coming. He was ranked 1 & I was 2 at the time. DeLiddo says half jokingly, " You should move up to wrestle Eric." I thought about it for a second and thought I'll probably never have this opportunity again. It would be exciting for the fans and be remembered for years.
We decided then that we would surprise him. Now me and Eric go way back and have been friends for years but this was about wrestling. I don't remember giving him the cold shoulder but I do that to people when I'm focused. My mind set was where it needed to be. When it was time to wrestle the crowd went crazy. I never heard them more excited in my time there. I was pumped. Shot a low single right away and took him down then cut him quick. Over the next two minutes he got in on me two times and I funked my way out.
he took me down and rode me out then rode me the next period. He took me down in the third and I escaped finally. Final score was 5-3 with his 1 pt. riding time. Great memory. Priceless

John Smith step down? What a dumb statement.

footage? right....back then, if you weren't in an area where it was covered by the local newspaper/media you had to wait for a month to read about in your next issue of Amateur Wrestling News!

anonymous coward your an idiot, who are you going to get better than john smith at oklahoma state?

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

mentally prepare your wrestlers like oliver in big matches to stay on the offense and he would have won the darn match. with the way oklahoma state wrestled at the ncaas there needs to be a coaching change and a serious shake up in okie land. maybe john smith steps down and takes over the freestyle team or helps out and someone else steps up and gets them back on top.

Is there any footage of that match?

YeahBuddy they were driving 3-4 hours across the state from San Luis Obispo to Fresno, CA for a dual that night. Cell or GPS or mapquest or anything else we utilize in 2012 might have been a big help back in the day

Great story. Speaking of epic...how about that hair: parted to perfection

They were lost...and had no cell phones or navigation systems to navigate them to the arena

Great story. Guerrero has always been a class act. Although, what the heck does GPS have to do with anything?

is there a video of this?

Good story. I wish guys like Eddie Guerrero could have been there at Okie State to help a guy like Jordan Oliver be mentally prepared for the Steiber match. They should really think about hiring him.

Does anyone know where I could watch the match?

CaliBears 1 year ago

Eddie, I was their. Stephen took you down right off the bat. You won 4 to 3. I remember watching your eyes open up when you realize Abas was going up and the way your demeanor changed. From relax to being intense. That was a great match and the Fresno State Fans went wild. I miss those days at the North Gym at Fresno State. Better than the Dake and Taylor match this past week.
