Franklin Gomez came into the world championships and made it all the way to the finals before falling to defending world champion Besik Kudukhov from Russia. Franklin Gomez talks about his journey through the tournament and becoming the first medalist for Puerto Rico.

Some people criticize a good man for going Puerto Rico. Its an individual competition in the long run. And as individual, he has shared his insights and attitude. If he wrestled for the Antarctic Team, he'd still be tops in my mind.

@Beast-he probably wanted to represent a country that even without the medal around his neck would see him as a citizen. Not judge him by his accent lol. Jk this kid is just great all around, great person, great wrestler, and great ambassador

I love this guy's attitude toward freestyle. A lot of American wrestlers could learn from what he has to say here. It's a simple question--do you want to be the best in the World? Okay, then. Adapt. Change your mindset COMPLETELY. The Kudukovs of this world aren't going to wrestle you folkstyle. But if you make the mental shift, you can be right there with them.

As for the whole USA/PR thing, if we were more like the Russians, we'd allow any American who didn't make our USA team to try out for the PR team, maybe even field a team from Guam. Why the hell not? You never know, Brent Metcalf might have got a medal this year if he got on a roll.
Bottom line, Gomez is American Trained, so we should all be proud of what he accomplished at Worlds.

Why would he have gotten gold if he was on the USA team? Do you think he has been eating twinkies since he graduated? I guarantee you he is working just as hard as any USA team member.

Gomez is a PR boy...a Florida boy...a USA boy...and a MSU boy...we can all be happy about his performance. The sky is the limit for him, and if he keeps working, he is only going to get better. The scary thing is that he is even better at freestyle than he was at folkstyle, and he was damned good at folkstyle.

After I say Im proud of a florida boy doing so well I'll say this, I dont care who he represents, Franklin Gomez is a wonderful ambassador of our sport. I dont think him wanting to wrestle for Puerto Rico is about not appreciating the USA but about connecting to his roots and heritage in a way that he has probably never really been able to do before. Great kid, great wrestle, great young man. Keep it up!

I've known Franklin for several years. He's an awesome person and someone that all young wrestlers should emulate. He was blessed with incredible talent and has worked hard to maximize that talent on the mat.

He's always wanted to wrestle for Puerto Rico and told me that back when he was in high school. I wish him luck!

For those of you who don't know, Puerto Rico is a USA territory. So, in a way, he is representing the USA. Regardless, he is a class act--I just became a fan of this kid.
