Mijain Lopez of Cuba is considered one of the best wrestlers in the world and one of, if not the best, athlete in all of wrestling. He has been accused of taking a dive and throwing matches for money in the past. Many people in the press section from all over the world let it be known that they thought he got paid to lose the gold medal match to the hometown Turk. Watch the video and tell us what you think

Good Lord! I hope he got a lot of money, because he embarrassed himself, his country and the sport with that performance.

Lol wow he basically gave him the match. Did you see that? He basically front rolled when the turk was doing the move to help him out. He probably lost in replacement for a Visa. I am Cuban and believe me that he def. did it for the money. He still is the best regardless and go on to win another Olympic Gold.

He got paid 8 months ago

He is vastly superior to the supposed new champion. That match was garbage!!!!!!!

World class wrestler looked like a decent high school wrestler...he needed the money and I have not walked in his shoes...he was compensated for his loss...

If we cannot trust the Cubans..who can we trust!
These tradegies from an American point of view are always "shocking" as wrestling is seen as an amateur sport to us. It is not a "job" as it is in other countries therefore, our athletes compete for the medal, to be the champion and be the best of the best.
We have our professional sports that do similar shenanigans with steroids, HGH, cheating in recruiting that usually takes place by a small group of individuals.

yo! im cuban and i know lopez ,,i can tell he did sell that match cuz cuba is a poor country and sometimes we need money instead of a in medal

I have heard that payoffs are common at this level, but not for the finals. Usually the payoff comes when someone needs to lose in order for another country's wrestler to medal. This should be a unwritten payoff rule. Let the finals alone!

The majority of the comments are from people who know nothing of Greco. Greco is Far Bigger than Freestyle Oversea. I RESPECT and Enjoy both Styles. Their are many attacks and set ups going on but the average audience doesn't understand the technique that is taking place. There are several tie up, Bumping, controlling Center/Edge, and off ballanceing techniques. Par terre offense and defense technique are exciting to watch if you know what you are observing.

I Hope We Bring Home HArdware in FReeStyLE!!!

Is this the new pay to play? 8 months ago

Wait, actually I guess it's just the OLD play to get paid!

Hmmmm 8 months ago

Looks like Lopez is going to need acting lessons if he plans to keep this up!

ekkeman 8 months ago

Yes...He lost intentionally. I actually don't think he did a very convincing job of looking interested in the match.

Happens All the time and not just in wrestling.

Cuba is a poor country and 10,000 is a lot of money over there. I Dont blame him for taking the money

Snatch, great movie that I watched again last night.

Anonymous Coward 8 months ago

the coaches throw at the end was the best part of the match

Anonymous Coward 8 months ago

no movement in par terre in first = mean he threw it.... Sad but not the first time!

Jamie Sperrazza 8 months ago

Lopez comes off the mat the first period and the coaches tell him, They'll hang us with the ring ropes if they think it's rigged. Get out there and hurt him. But for F@$# sake, do not win this match! quote taken from the movie Snatch.

Dortanyia McIntyre 8 months ago

I can't believe this. He looked like he was either throwing it or sick. I really hope he wasn't paid off.

greco is boring........

They paid off the Cuban AND the officials.. there aren't usually leg fouls given for wrestling in the standing position:)

In all honesty, it's hard to tell from just this video if the Cuban is out of shape or losing on purpose. The Cuban and Turskish coaches sure treated it like a real match. It just sucks because we could be comaring Lopez to Kareline, or talking about an epic upset.. Instead we have to discuss corruptionin wrestling. How stupid. If any evidence shows up that this match was a work both athletes should be banned from competition.
Finally imagine how pissed off Kayalp is if he did, indeed, win legitimaately . No one believes him!

It's called play wrestling/sparring everyone over seas does it.
LOL...we need a "like" button

That guy could be a hell of a DE or OT in the NFL.

Kayaalp is very strong man! 8 months ago

Dont miss that Kayaalp is very strong wrestler and getting stronger and more experienced.he is just 22. Look at his old succeses.

Anonymous Coward 8 months ago

He wasnt even wrestling.

before this match 8 months ago

Jerome Taylor 8 months ago

VERY SUSPECT

Jimmy Alger 8 months ago

To make it all clear. come on guys haha in freestyle and greco they don't go by lbs they go by kilograms. so it's 120 kilograms which is approximatly 260. also he flopped it what a disgrace to the sport idc how much in debt you are or how sucky your life is. wrestling comes along with pride and apparently this guy doesn't have any. When you hit the mat you always go to win. not to lose on purpose for money

Textbook Turk 8 months ago

Idk looked like a textbook Turk reverse gut to me of you watch the best of their country Yerikaya you would know what I am talking about. Not te greatest match and the Cuban getting hit for touching legs was pathetic but all in all no one beats Turks in reverse guts that why he got the turn in the first and not in the second
