Yeah they quit letting the D-2 and 3s champs in around 93 or 94. Main reasons is the D-1 coaches were whining about them taking AA spots from their guys and team points. Bunch of whussy's. The likes of Carlton Haselrig U Pitt-Johnstown 6 time national champ and Dan Russell AA from Portland St. and Mark Rigatuso two time AA from Univ. Neb of Omaha may never be seen again. I say bring it back, would do all of wrestling good.
Got to disagree guys... Marion catches fire after beating Novachkov in OT and takes Russell in a classic final! Go Hawks! (Maple beats Mangrum for third)
Going out on a limb on the AAs of this weight..... shoot. No one is going to get this right. So, here is my guess. We really need to hold a contest for who ever gets this weight right AAs and 184. Just a thought.1) Russell2) Navochkov3) Maple4) Marion5) Mangrum6) Stieber7) Little8) Nelson
Good call Mike, Port Dutton is a good first round match! I don't think they are AA status in this bunch of hammers. The conso's in this bracket is a freakin mindfeild.
no mention of port vs dutton! Dutton can definitly sneak in and AA, made it to the blood round last year and should have beaten nevinger
141- Team Race-Penn State- NO ENTRY-Iowa- This weight class along with 157 may be the key to Iowa winning the NationalChampionship. For Marion (#3) it all depends on which Montell decides to show up. We have all seenand we all know he has what it takes to finish the weekend on top of the podium. We also know that ifhe decides to put his offense away for the weekend, he could wind up watching the parade of AA’s onTV from the deck of a riverboat. Montell, more than any Hawk, has been the source of great animosityas well as support from both Hawk fans and detractors. The good Montell should have no problemmaking it to the quarters where he should se Novachkov (POLY) in a match between the last 2 NCAARunner-ups at this weight. The bad Montell could get bounced by Morales (WVA) or the Port/Duttonwinner in round 2 (Montell beat Dutton 8-3 in rd 1 last year). If the Bad Montell shows up, it could becurtains for the Hawks title hopes, if the good Montell shows up, he could skip into the semis where hewould meet up with Maple (OKLA), in what would figure to be an all out war. The Hawks can surviveMarion slipping to 5th/6th, as long as nothing else bad happens along the way at the other weights, but ifhe can wrestle to his seed or higher it may give the Hawks the ability to suffer a setback at anotherweight. Prediction: 6th Place- Minnesota- In a team race that is expected to be as close as this year’s tournament, itis easy to look through the brackets and find several key matches. While one match generally isn’t goingto win the title for any of these five teams, each of them has one match that is so important that if theylose that match the team could be in big trouble. Well that’s the case for the 2nd round match betweenDardanes (#9) and 8th seeded Darius Little. The reason why this match is so important is because of thepath that will need to be negotiated through the consolation rounds is brutal. If Dardanes gets beatagainst Little he will fall into the conso round and eventually meet up with the loser of Novachkov (POLY)and Kemmerer (PENN), then to reach the podium he will need to get past either Nelson (UVA) orSueflohn (NEB). Dardanes has the ability to beat each of those four, it is still quite a difficult path, just toreach the low end of the podium. Little and Dardanes met on January 1st at the Southern Scuffle, whereLittle came out on top 7-3, I look for the rugged Big 10 regular season to be the preparation needed topush Dardanes to the “upset” win. The Gophers need to have every one of their guys to at leastperform to their seed and several to perform above their seed if they want to win the title, andDardanes making the podium is essential to their chances at winning. Prediction: 7th- Oklahoma State- This might have been the worst draw imaginable for Kindig coming out of theBig 12s. The Cowboys were hoping for at least a few points out of this weight in an effort to keep thingsclose, this draw makes that a very difficult task. The situation for the Cowboys at this weight is verysimilar to that of Penn State at 133, the difference being, Penn State has a lot bigger margin for error.Okie State can’t afford for Kindig to go 0-2, but a tough 1st round draw against #4 Mangrum (ORST) andthen a conso battle against either Ashnault (RUT) or Wolfensperger (UNI) makes that a likelihood.Prediction: 0-2-Cornell-Nevinger is another Big Red wrestler that needs to pick up points if Cornell wants tohave a chance, and he got a decent 1st round draw to pick up bonus against Mattingly (CMU). 2nd roundmatch against #2 seed Maple (OKLA) is a little rough and his conso drop isn’t great either as he will morethan likely fall on top of the Krop (PRIN) Small (KST) loser and then hit Sueflohn (NEB) or Nelson (UVA).Bonus in that first round match will make this weight class a success for Cornell. Prediction: 1-2
absolute flat-out best preview you guys ever did. the only way it could be better is if it was out by the pool with kaiser humping a rabbit in the background.
to achieve all american status a wrestler has to win 4 matches before 3 losses correct?
