chris, if Caldwell did not get hurt, Dake would have taken 3rd, most likely. So a 5th, assuming Caldwell is there is not too far off. Things did not go as planned

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

I picked Dake for 5th. He proved me wrong. Decisively! He looked amazing. Watching Dake this year I did not think he was ready for the move up in weight class, or that he was not as motivated as last year. Dake is the man. When he lost to LeValley, I figured LeValley could take it all. LeValley really is good. He had such a close match with Chamberlain and I was suprised he lost. Credit goes to Chamberlain in that match, he never stopped and kept coming. On the other hand, I wished Sanjaa would have taken my advice and not chosen down versus Dake. With the score 1-0 Dake, I think Sanjaa may have scored a takedown. I am dissapointed Cody told a kid who grew up doing freestyle and got tilted at will by LeValley, to chose down against a known tough top rider like Dake.

Hey anonymous coward how about dake? He was suppose to take 5 th well guess what he didnt

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

I was sad to see Caldwell injury default. But the signs were there during the season that there were lingering problems. My man Sanjaa did well, but I wish Cody would have listened to my earlier post when I said Sanjaa must not take down versus Dake. I believe had he chosen nuetral for the third period, when the score was 1-0 Dake---Sanjaa could have gotten a takedown. Dake would have escaped and the match would have been won in overtime with another Sanjaa takedown. My fav pick, LeValley lost a hearbreaker to Chamberlain, when he got away fairley quickly in rideout , he did not keep wrestling and Chamberlain did---Kudos to Chamberlain --he deserved the win. I choose Frank for the title.

TOLD YOU SO !!!!! HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES

Caldwell doesn't have that explosively entertaining style when he dominated everyone from january until March. Him two years ago could major this entire bracket except maybe mollinaro. I don't know if he's preserving his shoulder or just doing what he has to do to get the win or just not that same guy. He's the type of guy that thrives when the odds are against him. This time they're not.
Kyle Dake is a lot harder to read. It almost seems like he's getting tired of the sport. On the other hand he could just be saving himself which is almost as bad. His matches are too close to hand him any title yet.
Lastly we got Mollinaro. He's the only consistent one in the group. Right now I would give the title to him but I don't think it's in his hands. Caldwell and Dake have way more firepower They just lack the consistency. They are in valleys right now. We might see them surge at nationals. But if they wrestle like they have been doing than Mollinaro powers his way to a title.

these two guys are great for wrestling. I hope they make it big

grajales over caldwell

Vermonster shirt would be dope

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

wow, DC gonna have his hands full before he reaches the semis let alone the finals. 4 weirdest stylis in this bracket lined up on Darrion Caldwells way. Ivan L. will tire him out, thats a bad 1st round right there. Grajales is bringing it and may do some damage too. Sanja is a weird dude. you never know what this guy is gonna do untill he does it. and Kyle Dake is Kyle Dake. we know what hes capable of and if DC passes him I think he takes the title.

fdsd 2 years ago

Yeah, Caldwell didn't look so hot at conference. In his NCAA brackets he's got a rather rocky path to the semi finals, 'cause his opponents are in good shape. That will wear down Caldwell considerably.

tte 2 years ago

A healthy and in-shape Caldwell would dominate 149 for sure. However, at the conference championships, his conditioning didn't look so great. And 2 weeks just isn't enough time to improve on that much. Thus we can count on a relatively out-of-shape Caldwell. So we know he's gonna be pretty tired by the time he reaches the semis, where he'll likely see Dake. Thus I think Dake has good shot at winning.

Caldwell is definitely gonna try to pull ahead early on with some of his surprising and crazy good moves in attempt to get some insulation before he burns out and stalls through the 3rd. For Dake to win, he needs to do this: keep the first period score at 0-0. He should start his "legit" offense late in the 2nd, when Caldwell is beginning to break down. Any big moves on Dake's part before that is crazy against a fresh Caldwell. In the third, Dake should bring-it-on something fierce. Caldwell will be crawling off the mat hardly able to breath.

I didn't see Caldwell turn up the heat in his conference match and he did look out of shape, but it doesn't mean he can't turn up the heat. I see him as having incredible physical skills that you don't always see come out until he is challenged. LeValley looked like he had the will to win against Dake, but as a Dake fan, I think Dake could make a come-back. He fights and until he wrestled LeValley I hadn't seen him get out fought. A fully ready Caldwell will run the bracket, but he even if he has more than he is showing I dont think he has all he had before his injuries mounted up. Frank M. doesn't look like the guy to top them all. I also think Jamal Parks, on his game right now, is a wrestler who can make some noise this year.

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

Bold call, but I really dont see any scenarios where Mason makes the finals

armpit 2 years ago

levalley will most likely have to beat chamberlin, whom he hasn't. bad style match up for him.

c-nor-----NJ 2 years ago

IM CALLING IT NOW REMEMBER THIS POST>>>>> mario mason will wrestle in NCAA finals vs caldwell. now he had a good draw and ill say why. first he has VA tech kid who he easily beat already, then probably santos who he got caught by but was killing him. then hes gonna beat molinaro again just looking at there past matches, and then he beat LeValley again and goes onto NCAA FINALS. not gonna say he will beat caldwell but it should be interesting

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

Once again that is a post that makes no sense. It was the same Caldwell who both lost to him and beat him, it all occured in the same year. You are throwing a lot of what if's out there.

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

I place Caldwell low because I do not think he is the same Caldwell who beat Metcalf in the NCAA finals. I believe he is more like the Caldwell who got majored by Metcalf in the all star meet. Caldwell has not wreslted many matches this year. He has not faced really strong competion. Is he healthy? Is he in wrestling shape? Is he in tournament shape? I believe he is a great athlete and wrestler, but I do not think he is ready for a 3 day tournament grind against top competition. If Sanjaa beats him, I think he's done. In fact, do not be shocked if Lopouchanski, who has a odd, difficult style, or Grajales gets the job done before Sanjaa!

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

anyone who places caldwell so low loses credbilbity, imo

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

My picks for 149
1 Kevin LeValley
2 Ganbayar Sanjaa
3 Frank Molinaro
4 Jason Chamberlain
5 Kyle Dake
6 Darrion Caldwell

LeValley is a machine. Just ask Dake how relentless LeValley is. Sanjaa is a beast and can beat an out of shape Caldwell. Sanjaa has the strength and wrestling style to slow Caldwell down, tire him out and defeat him. It will be more difficult for Sanjaa to beat Dake, but I think it is possible. He should not choose down, and must score at least 2 takedowns. I see Sanjaa winning in ot. Molinaro and LeValley in Semi's should be awesome. I think this is a toss up, but will give it to Levalley, he beat Dake and Dake beat Molinaro. Chamberlain is a tough grinder and I see him getting it done through the tough wrestlebacks. Dake takes 5th, but honestly, I do not really think Caldwell will make it to 6th. I can see someone like Mason or Parks in the 6th spot.

These guys are GRREEAAATT!!!! I agree they should be the commentators for the NCAA's.

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

Appreciate the breakdown, especially from two guys with a passion for NCAA wrestling.

Whether Caldwell is either not trying 100% because he's not challenged or isn't the same wrestler he used to be after the shoulder injury, I admit he's fun to watch. With his flaws (all or nothing moves), he still has some of the "pin or be pinned" attitude from three years ago (look at the Ryan Lang / Northwestern match) but he knows what exactly he has to do just enough to win.

One funny possible situation: If Caldwell and Molinaro meet in the final and Iowa needs Caldwell to beat Molinaro to edge out PSU in the title chase, it would be great to see all the Hawkeye fans at blackheartgoldpants.com be forced to take up the poms and cheer for Darrion.

Ya, the seeding this year is, shall we say, funky. There are only a few weights in which the seeding seems logical. Applying the logic used year-after-year, the 149 seeding should start like this:

1. Caldwell
2. LeValley
3. Dake
4. Molinaro

B 2 years ago

What's up with the crazy seeds? Ok, Caldwell deserves the #1 seed, but why the heck is Dake #4? Dake beat Molinaro in a head to head match. Dake is a returning NCAA champion. Dake majored Mason, and Mason beat Molinaro. Looks like someone on the seeding committee wants Penn State to win, because the team race is going to come down to this one. If Molinaro gets into the finals and Dake does not, Penn State wins. Somehow, however, I doubt Molinaro will make it to the finals. I see LeValley taking him out. And it's possible for Dake to beat Caldwell: he's got to keep it close the first two periods and avoid that funk stuff (Dake's funk stuff will get him pinned against someone like Caldwell). Dake has to keep it close and then pour it on in the third period. Caldwell will not be in good enough shape to handle a 3rd period onslaught. His conditioning was terrible at the conference tournament, and there is physically no way he can improve upon that much by NCAA tournament -- it's simply too late. So if Dake wrestles strategically, he can win.

vaboy 2 years ago

no one is saying valenti isn't a good wrestler but he's not AA status and caldwell barley beats him? valenti isn't dake, levalley,or molinaro good. haha and yeah he may have escaped but he wouldve not taken valenti down out of sheer anger he wouldve backed up and ran and huffed and puffed with his baby lungs

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

all this hate on caldwell for winning, i just dont get it.
where is the hate on dake for losing?
also acting like valenti is not a good wrestler. he has two solid wins this year against brian stephens who has beaten guys like gillespie, lopuchanski, grajales, and parks.
i wouldn't be surprised is valenti becomes a bit of a bracket buster this year at 149

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

Valenti was never close to beating Caldwell. Even if they gave him that two, Caldwell would have escaped and taken him down just out of sheer anger.

jaja binks 2 years ago

caldwell got booed so hard after the valenti match i think he lost the respect of a lot of people that were there to see that match
