Take folkstyle out, simple as that.

Vougar 2 years ago

if this really is Vougar Oroudjov, I think you might not be a bad candidate to add to the USAW Coaching Staff...get a bit of international "feel" in there

on 2a 2 years ago

the person who scored the first point gets the the choice

rule change ideas 2 years ago

these are just my thoughts:
1. push-out rule
2. tripod rule (knee or elbow must touch to score)
3. 2 out of 3 rounds wins match
2a. if tied at the end of a round, wrestlers to into referees position and the first one to score wins (top guy may win on ride-out)
2b. if no score at the end of the period, coin toss

team scores (per period won):
ride-out: 1 pt
decision (1-3): 2 pts
major decision (4-5): 3 pts
tech (6 pts) : 4 pts
fall (end of match): 9 pts
just my thoughts, personally i love folkstyle the way it is, but at least with these ideas it may not be TOO much of a change of pace from folk to free.

I think most of you are right. We need more Freestyle and Greco. That doesn't mean we replace folkstyle.

What I mean is we need more opportunities for our youth wrestlers to compete in the Olympic styles. We also need to be competing internationally. Seems when I was younger we had trips over seas for freestyle and greco all summer long.
If USA Wrestling wants to fix the problem they need to take the NUWAY approach and attack it at a grassroots level. They have lost some state organizations for whatever reasons and they need to get them back.
In my youth all we had was freestyle, with a folkstyle here and there. Too many kids are afraid to go to a freestyle or greco event b/c they don't know how it works. High schools coaches and youth clubs could help to by offering a freestyle and greco club after the folkstyle season. But, we need more events locally to compete with some international trips to open our eyes to what is out there.

Is wrestling rules when u win because is u,when u lost because ur coach.Lol.Coaches didnt wrestle,is wrestler did lost.We leave place call United State. We need get United too.R best wrestler coach Brands,Smith,Sanderson have to get united at off season. Is all about kids not college. We need get together to win, not to yell.

Nick 2 years ago

It's obvious we simply need more freestyle in the US. I've always been against freestyle at the college level, but after thinking about it carefully, I think we ought to start giving that some serious thought.

Furthermore, we don't need more strategy...we need WAY less strategy. Our guys were so limited by their overplanned strategic game plans that they refused to let loose and fight. That's one of the biggest changes to Team USA under Jones is a HUGE emphasis on studying the film and dialing in strategy. I think it went too far...that's why Herbert didn't attack when the Cuban's hands hit the mat...wasn't in the game plan. Every US wrestler looked as if they were "bound up tight" in a security blanket of preplanned approaches. It's quite possible we watched too much film and dialed in our opponents too much. It looks to me that if our guys would just go out there and fight it out with explosive effort and deal with situations as they happen rather than waiting for the game plan to work out we would have fought to a better result.
Also, it's really easy to critique from afar...much harder to make the wins happen...so what do I know?

Boggwan 2 years ago

Actually, I didn't see Iowa aggressive style from Team USA at all. Herbert snapped the Cuban to his hands twice in the second and made no attempt to score...with the guys hands down on the mat and he made no attempt to score! Sorry, that's not aggression.
Iowa's relentless shot after shot after shot offense...other than Obe I didn't see Team USA relentlessly shooting...OK perhaps Herbert in the first round. And his shots were countered to the score as were Za's...
The rest of the world teams were far more aggressive than Team USA. Our shots and other techniques appeared to be "going through the motions" like it was low-level drilling at training camp. The top athletes at the world's EXPLODE every technique with a 100% effort. Our technique was fine, just executed in a wimpy, namby pamby way.
Wrestling is a sport of explosiveness and that was strongly exemplified by the top talent the past week. It was not exemplified by Team USA.

I believe in Zeke jones, he has proven himself as a coach but WTF happened? I believe it was inexperience and that Iowa influence. Raw aggression and conditioning does not win against internationally seasoned wrestlers.

In my opinion it’s not the wrestlers or the coach’s fault that we got manhandled this year. I believe our failing system is the one to blame. Wrestlers get to college and they are forced to wrestle aggressively instead of strategically. We boo the wrestler who doesn’t run back to the starting position because somehow that is more important than moves. I never was the caliber wrestler like Brent Metcalf. But I have to think that the international style doesn’t fit into his conditioned game plan that was established at college. Break the guy physically and when he can barely stand he then uses a high crotch, snap down spin behind, and front headlock to dismantle his opponent. He has been doing that type of wrestling for at least 5 years prior to the world championships. Now he is wrestling opponents that can’t be broken in that way. Over time he will hopefully adjust and find balance between aggression and technique. Maybe he can be as well balanced as Besik who in my opinion is one of the most exciting wrestlers in international wrestling. I agree with everyone who says folkstyle is to blame. People that disagree will say what about Cael, Brands, Smith, Monday, and Henry who wrestled both styles? I guess I can only come back with that the Russian team won more gold medals this year than we have won in the past 10 to 15 years combined. I don’t believe the Russians would be mentioning past heroes like Sergei Beloglazov if they performed as bad as we did this year.

Great wrestlers do not necessarily make great coaches;common mistake made in hiring, but with so much money in the mix, our Freestyle team should be able to take their pick of PROVEN, SUCCESSFUL COACHES. We've had B.Douglas, J.Sea, D.Gable etc in the past, with great success.

I just gave myself a raise and raised my pension. That living the dream fund will take care of it. In fact I am living the dream...hahaaha...ill just fire Zeke and by another 4 years and no one will even notice...hold on thats my realtor on the other line.

The US really sucks! We are like nowhere close to being competitive. What are the coaches saying? They better be saying we need major changes! I agree with some of the other posts that too much emphasis on the Iowa folktyle (aggressive offense and conditioning) isn't the way to go.

steve moore 2 years ago

I agree with Ft, we need to get rid of the "stalling call" in folkstyle. It's too subjective and favors brainless aggression. We need technique. Also, in folkstyle I think we should start all three periods in neutral. Bottom in folkstyle is just boring and it's a waste of time.

ft 2 years ago

OMG....The US is among the worst teams in the world!!!! Get those Iowa guys off the coaching staff. Haven't we figured out yet that the super-aggressive, always-offensive Iowa macho stuff doesn't work against technically sound wrestlers? In folksyle, we need to get rid of that stupid stalling, which favors Iowa and brute conditioning. Let's bring technique back into the picture. We need it. We got wooped at worlds.

best part of the worlds.... the drunk guy comin at joe lol

THUNDERGODxx 2 years ago

Joe thanks so much for all your work. You are the best thing in wrestling right now. I hope the USA can figure out what went wrong and fix it what a disappointment. Terrible!!!!!!!

everyone at usa wrestling should be fired. they are doing nothing but soaking up money and leading us down a path of crappier performances. when is this country of people going to wake up.

Rich Bender 2 years ago

Thanks for the support and contributions !!!.....I could use 'em !!!

Zeke Jones 2 years ago

Anyone know of any college jobs opening up ????......or Penn AD phone number ?

Kingdum 2 years ago

We obviously are not doing something critical! However, in the matches I watched we were beaten, not by any fancy freestyle stuff, but because we failed to get or finish takedowns, and were ourselves taken down. An exception was Obe, who got caught and pinned. Nothing real fancy, and little to do with freestyle rules as they exist now.

Robert Gendler 2 years ago

We seemed inexperienced both technically and strategically. The aggressive keep coming forward style no longer offers any advantages and in fact is working against us now that other countries have taken counter offense to the level of an art form. We need to focus less on conditioning and more on technique and strategy. With the current rules we can no longer win matches with heart and conditioning. We need to change the focus of our training dramatically. That said I hate the new rules. How can a world championship be decided in 4 minutes?

matt 2 years ago

thanks joe. we suck. what the heck has happened to our teams? this is embarrassing and pathetic.

We're frickin' fricked 2 years ago

Seriously, we are in trouble. We're losing to guys who are losing to guys who are losing to guys. What is the win-loss record for all 21 weights? No offense to the girls, but they have a shorter road to the podium.

broken system 2 years ago

10 million dollar organization, coaches making 160k, Bender making 200k...no results. In the corporate world you get canned in wrestling you get a raise. Our sport is dying in the US because of these idiots. I sure hope NUWAY takes over and Dave Dean gets a crack at leading us in the right direction.
