The stalling call was good. The guy took 3 steps back, I don't care how many times he shot earlier in the match, if you take 3 steps back it is stalling.
Ashnault wrestled a nice match. Rodriguez looked like he was still in freestyle mode. Still can't understand why he chose neutral given that he'd already shown he could get off bottom. Lots of quick stall calls in this tournament if you watch the vids.
Thanks much. I am glad I asked and didn't simply make assumptions regarding a refs intentions. I have wrestled, coached and attended many matches over the years. The great majority of them have been well officiated. When I see something that apprears questionable to me - I've learned to ask questions about it before reaching conclusions that might be inaccurate due to oversight or lack of information.
This was an awesome match. The stalling point was unwarranted. The kid was taking shots and getting stuck underneath over and over. No stalling. Guess the ref wanted to be noticed with all the attention the match was receiving from the crowd. Both kids wrestled great...
The stall warning occurs about the 5:45 mark. The ref is off-screen, but you can hear him on the audio. The stall penalty point occurs about the 6:54 mark.
I must have missed the stall warning earlier in the match. There was certainly no stall warning giving during the last 7 seconds of the regulation time. Did anyone see a stall warning earlier? If there was no stall warning prior to the awarding of the stall point, why didn't anyone question the ref about the call? What about the second ref? Isn't it his job to correct questionable or miscalls? If not - what is his purpose for being there? Conversely, were the rules regarding stalling warnings and the awarding of stalling points changed for the Super 32 Tournament : -) ?
Wow they tried to steal that match from Ashnault. A stall call with under 5 seconds on the clock when the kid took a bunch of shots throughout the match? Ridiculous. The other thing that really stuck out in this match was Rodriguez taking neutral in the 3rd. That cost him the match. You have to have total confidence on bottom. It cost him twice in this match, in the 3rd and in the ride out. No confidence in his bottom wrestling. He has great technique on his feet but wrestling is 3 positions.
