In the 132lb Texas state finals Scott Akers and Petey Martinez get into a scramble and end up in a potential stalemate situation when the referee awards a takedown. Maybe I don't know the rules as well as I thought, but it sure doesn't look like a takedown to me. This was the first takedown of the match and Akers went on to win 5-0.

You see calls like this all the time in high school. It comes from one of three places: 1. plain old bad ref, 2. ref who has never wrestled or watched wrestling, or 3. ref who has not watched MODERN wrestling. Really, this kind of thing was not common when many refs were wrestling in the mid 80's. Some simply have not kept up with the evolving styles. NO TAKEDOWN. |

THATS NOT 2

Yeah well obviously this ref is stupid as sh** because we have all seen this situation before and it always results in either a stalemate or a interesting scramble, but this should never be 2 when the guy on bottom clearly covered the leg and neither of the two wrestlers had control. |

Control was not established, but the kid on bottom allowed that call to be made when he stopped moving and hoped for the stalemate. In a scramble situation you have to keep moving until it truly is a stalemate. |

I think that our high school refs need to watch more wrestling matches. Especially ones that have scrample situations and stalemates. One would hope then that our high school refs would have a better understanding of how to make calls. |
