In the 132lb Texas state finals Scott Akers and Petey Martinez get into a scramble and end up in a potential stalemate situation when the referee awards a takedown. Maybe I don't know the rules as well as I thought, but it sure doesn't look like a takedown to me. This was the first takedown of the match and Akers went on to win 5-0.

no takedown. hip to hip, off his base but ankle not spiked. white singlet needed to put untrapped leg over defenders leg but since he couldnt do it, NO TAKEDOWN.

Stalemate. No way that is control.

That was a bad call. No takedown

Awful 1 year ago

Awful call. Maybe that position would look awkward in 1989 and a takedown might be awarded. But it's 2012, obviously since the evolution of funk and leg passing, refs today should know better. That clown needs to re-cert

THIS IS NOT A TAKEDOWN. HE DOES NOT HAVE CONTROL OF THREE SUPPORTING POINTS. HAD HE HOOKED HIS OPPONENTS LEG WITH HIS
LEFT IT WOULD BE A TAKEDOWN.

You see calls like this all the time in high school. It comes from one of three places: 1. plain old bad ref, 2. ref who has never wrestled or watched wrestling, or 3. ref who has not watched MODERN wrestling. Really, this kind of thing was not common when many refs were wrestling in the mid 80's. Some simply have not kept up with the evolving styles. NO TAKEDOWN.

No takedown

I wouldn't call it a takedown, however, I was waiting for an Egg Roll at :20. That would've truly been dirty.

I don't agree with it being a takedown but if so, shouldn't there be points for an escape?

THATS NOT 2 1 year ago

Yeah well obviously this ref is stupid as sh** because we have all seen this situation before and it always results in either a stalemate or a interesting scramble, but this should never be 2 when the guy on bottom clearly covered the leg and neither of the two wrestlers had control.

I bet you Allen could beat the mess out of 99% of Oregon teams, if not all. Your not Iowa, PA, etc...I wouldnt be dogging on Texas wrestling. I'd consider it pretty comparable to Oregon these days.

That did not meet takedown criteria, no control, no 2

Jared Lawrence scored a takedown over Eric Larkin in the NCAA finals the same way. We all thought the same thing...no takedown.

no takedown.

Control was not established, but the kid on bottom allowed that call to be made when he stopped moving and hoped for the stalemate. In a scramble situation you have to keep moving until it truly is a stalemate.

In terms of the reffing, these types of bad calls are being made all over - not just TX. I agree, referees need to stay current - both with the rules and the action on the mat. Let's not even get started on how poorly and inconsistently stalling is being called.

watch the female in the background give a "what, that is not a takedown look" and then shake her head and say that wasn't two. If she can see it from that far away, than I'd hate to see how a ref could justify that call.

My $.02 no take down

I think that our high school refs need to watch more wrestling matches. Especially ones that have scrample situations and stalemates. One would hope then that our high school refs would have a better understanding of how to make calls.

That was not two!!!!!!!! Terrible call I guess thats Texas wresltng for you though.
