Here is a situation where the ref awarded an escape and then a takedown and we want to know what you think about the call. JoeFlo and Bader disagree with each other, Joe thinks it was the right call but Bader doesn't.

The coach is an idiot for coaching that strategy. Obviously coached the kid did it ON purpose. Case book comment is correct. 1E 2TD, warn the wrestler for stalling, and warn the coach for misconduct.

We must get rid of these BS tactics, wrestling must be aggressive not try to work the rules, cheap and unsportsmanlike BS.

The rule book doesn't say that he has to turn ... '
It just states that he must be able to DEFEND ....'
The bottom wrestler has WELL beyond reaction time to
"turn and DEFEND'... he opts not to turn.
at this point he is free from his opponent, and has had oportunity to DEFEND.
1 escape...
He Continues to act like and idiot.. and opt to not try to wrestle..'
2 TD..
Good call Jodie...

stalling on the bottom wrestler for avoiding wrestling, classic case of wasting time, if kids dont wanna waste time like this then just cut the kid before the clock starts

wrestlingref.com 1 year ago

There is no escape or takedown here per the 2012 Case manual (Situation D on page 32).

Also per the case manual, Situation B on page 52 the bottom wrestler could be warned or penalized for stalling.

As a ref my self I would give 1E 2TD plus 1Pt for fleeing the mat the kid just walked off the mat

Ref Man 1 year ago

Two points for being stupid.. seriously though, the bottom wrestler could had the opportunity to turn and face, but he chose not to... probably could have called stalling.

I really don't see the point of Walsh walking off the mat, if the call wasn't made the top wrestler could attempt to cut him every time, and the bottom wrestler could just walk off the mat, and eat away at the clock. I say good call by the ref.

bad call, the coach was right he never faced him. stalling on the hand should have been called or fleeing

official 1 year ago

Not an escape not a takedown. Stalling yes. Maybe fleeing. He did walk off the mat and was avoiding wrestling. Wrestler has to defend himself.

I would have called stalling......

to bad the bottom wrestler ended up pinning him

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

How do you guys even get confused on this? He was cut. Contact was broken. That is a 1 point escape, and puts them in neutral. THERE IS NO RULE ABOUT HAVING TO FACE YOUR OPPONENT TO BE NEUTRAL. The wrestler chose to leave his back turned while in neutral and gets taken down - 2 points. The ref got it right. This was simple. Wrestlers, never turn your back to another wrestler and never stop wrestling. If you do, expect bad things to happen on the mat.

right call. how can it not be an escape? he clearly let him up and there was seperation. he doesn't have to turn and face him

Topher Carton 2 years ago

thats the right call. its called wrestling for a reason

1 point escape, 1 point stalling

right 2 years ago

no escape, but call stalling on the bottom wrestler

nope 2 years ago

the rule says you need to face your opponent.. no 2

Randy H 2 years ago

Whether right or wrong, as a coach you have to left your wrestler know that the escape was awarded and be ready to wrestle.

Pete Holdaas 2 years ago

This is a no-brainer. Why would anyone say the ref made the wrong call? Holy cow, kid, turn and face your opponent or you deserve to be taken down!

Rollins 2 years ago

Right call it's wrestling no time to do what you want. Wrestle till the whistle first thing you learn not wrestle when you want. No offense against the kid but that is the way I see it.

Get rid of stalling in Folkstyle. Implement the push out rule as in the international styles. Also get rid of point penalties for improper starting position and for locking hands (as there is no real advantage in either situation, in my humble opinion). Also the leg clinch in freestyle has got to go. I say if there is no winner in regulation, throw 'em back out there with no time limit. One guy is going to break eventually.

Walsh was trying something he saw earlier,if you ever see him wrestle he is full speed.I have seen him score over 10 points in most matches, still stall warning, but no escape and no takedown.

I gave him 1 and 2 and 3 near fall

Right call.

In order for an escape to be awarded, the bottom wrestler obviously must first break free from his opponent's control, then achieve a state where he has the oppurtunity to defend himself. That's why you'll see kids stand up, break free, then get shot back down again and have no points awarded. It's because the wrestler never had the oppurtunity to defend himself. Well, this kid certainly had the 'oppurtunity' to defend himself, he just didn't take it.

Danny W 2 years ago

the kid on top cut him there for their was no control so that is an escape then the kid got a TD , that kid is a dumba** for turning his back to his opponet

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

I do not understand how some people are still saying there was no escape. Do you people skip past reading the long explanations? There are some very elaborate and word for word descriptions of rules listed here, all of which say he does not have to be facing his opponent…1 then 2. No question at all.

one plus two 2 years ago

that kid deserves to get taken down for the way he reacted to the opitional start....whatever the rules are...it should be a takedown just on principle...if you dont want to wrestle...and this kid looked like he clearly didnt want to be in there, then quit and go home

Cliff Fretwell 2 years ago

Not very often you see a sweet "backside" double leg. I also agree 3 points.

zc 2 years ago

Great Call! You don't have to "FACE" your opponent for an escape to be awarded. What does have to happen, in this situation, is that the defensive wrestler must be a considerable distance away beyond reaction time to earn an escape. This situation is in both the NCAA and NFHS case book. If I were officiating the match I would have called it 1 escape, stalling, 2 takedown, misconduct on the coach yelling from the corner. Great call.
