The number 1 and 2 teams collide in one of the biggest collegiate rivalry's of all time. New Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson looks to make an early impact as a Cyclone by taking down Tom Brands' defending national champion Hawkeyes.

hvolbeck was hit for stalling in the first period because he had the ankle trapped for 5 seconds and didn't do anything. don't complain about the refs just because a match didn't go your way, the refs tonight were great

Well, sure the basics of wrestling: hand fighting, fakes, heavy hands, snap downs. It's my opinion that the takedowns start multiplying because the other guy is so caught up into the Iowa style of wrestling that they start bending at the waist instead of the knees because they are winded. That is why I suggest a John Smith single. From the knee down without touching the opponent. Take them down and ride them as long as possible. What was Caldwell's first move? Low single. What else did he do to slow the match down, riding time. You don't need to hand fight to set up an opponent for a takedown. The pace of the match must be taken down a notch.

so your basically suggesting more stalling less action? just because the hawkeyes are working their a**es off to be able to go balls to the walls for 7 minutes doesnt mean other wrestlers cant??? its just that they dont... they are not able to keep the pace of the hawks thats why they are so dominant thats why and how they win!!! NOT BY STALLING!!! sure stalling might win you a lot of close matches, but its gonna lose you more!!!

Is there anything in the entire universe more boring than a collegiate 285 lb match? There is plenty of room between 197 and 285 to create a new weight class. Better yet, eliminate the 285 altogether and create a 220-230 lb class. Watching two behemoths lumber around the mat headgear-to-headgear for seven minutes is possibly the biggest waste of time imaginable.

That said, I want to thank this site for giving me the opportunity to see some collegiate matches (197 and down, that is). It's been a long time and it's nice to good wrestlers going at it.

you got one thing right jamie... it is easier said then done... another thing why dont you tallie up the takedowns for each team and find out which team got more... dont you know that handfighting is the best way to set up a shot...

I'm going to state the obvious. Why does every team fall into Iowa's game plan? Everyone gets put to sleep (tired out) by Iowa's hand fighting. The crowd and the refs then interpret hand fighting as being the aggressor even if they don't take a shot. It is my opinion that if a wrestler shoots a john smith low single, rides for over a minute, and stops all the hand fighting you will beat them. Do not get caught up in their style of wrestling. Do not interpret taking it to them as hand fighting them for 3 periods. You will not last. I'm sure it is easier said then done.

When Cael Sanderson announced his departure last summer, times seemed bleak in Cyclone City. But alumnus Kevin Jackson has kept hope alive! :-)

The guy knows how to adapt. He was an All-American wrestler for Louisiana State University but then that Top 10 program (which had a major shortage of starters from Louisiana) was eliminated due to Title IX. That forced Kevin Jackson to transfer from the bayou to the breadbasket...
How likely is it that ISU can win the NCAA team title this year? Let's not forget that former ISU coach Bobby Douglas won a national team title while at Arizona State 2 decades ago. I believe Coach Douglas remains @ I.S.U. in some capacity, and he's likely good friends with Kevin Jackson...
The Brands Brothers won't be able to relax... :-)

Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether Erekson will get medical redshirt or come back. I guess they are probably waiting to see how he does. His sub is holding up well so far.
