Looks like it was a great tourney, but in your interview you stated you want those tough teams from the west to come and then you flip and say you want to stay in east. Maybe by moving it around you will get diff competion and really set yourself apart from NHSCA cause there are studs in everystate out west not just a few in the east. Keep up the good work guys love the site

Stick in Pittsburgh and make sure it isn't on the same date as NHSCA Nationals and you'll see a lot more of the top tier kids coming

How about having this tournament in early October (several weeks before the Super 32 in Carolina)? Great tune up for the upcoming season.

But all in all, you guys did a fantastic job considering it was the first year. Heck, I remember watching Doug Blubaugh pin Habibi in old black and white footage in the Olympic Finals in 1960 Rome (on youtube). The match was held outside and it looks like there are about 20 people watching...that is 20 people if you count ancient stone monuments.
So my point is, this tourney (for all its faults) was a success and is a work in process. It will continue to get better and better over the years. People keep comparing this to other tournaments that have been running for years and are fine tuned. Simply a work in progress.

the funny thing is the OH boys didnt show up...no Jordans, Steibers, and the friggin St. Eds team flew to VA Beach...analize that...Everyone in OH knows that Barger is an ID.....would have been better of with screwy Louie running it...well maybe not...haha

guys you can pat yourself on the back all you want. Bottom line was Flo was a flop and the kids that were there from what I was told were disappointed. Kids like Zimmer, Cisneros, Issiah Martinez, Sean Dolan, and countless others who were advertised as coming were not there. There were a handful of college Coaches and they were the Assistants. Cael, Rob Koll, Jack Spates, Tom Hinkle, Jessie Castro, Carl Adams...I could go on and on were all walking the floor at NHSCA. Bottom line is you overpromised and under delivered. If there is a next year I would re think your strategy, as your gonna get a little competition in the video content game in 2011. And in case you knuckleheads didnt hear there were 2500 kids at NHSCA and live feed on every mat. Was very impressive. The only thing I heard about Flo was that it was a disappointment to the college coaches that sent staff there.

from what i can tell and what i watched in the videos, i would say you guys did a smooth job in running the tournement, i would do it on a weekend thats not the same as NHSCA nationals, look at the video of flonationals finals, there is no one there and it looks like more of a JV tournement than finals of nationals, i have been to NHSCA, Fargo, and bute adidas nnationals in kansas city, and those tournemnbts are huge and there are tons and tons of people watching the finals, and personaly i think that the better wrestling was at virginia beach, just have it a seperate weekend so that wrestlers can o to both and not have to choose one or the other

I have been to the VA Beach Tournament once and never returned. What Flo is doing is amazing. Flo values wrestling, as much as the community, and they show it day in and day out.

I don’t know how you do it, but keep it up. Having the tournament on the same date may have limited who came this year, but those who took that risk and were there sound like they left satisfied. Flo provides an opportunity that VA beach is unwilling to provide.
If you mention diluting the competition, you are looking at the wrong tournament. Flo’s true champ stands higher than the four champions you get at VA Beach. Every year the nation talks about the class division at state tournaments and then send people to VA beach to divide people even more…Flo listens and answers with a true national champ.
Moving forward I always love finals that used a spot light.
Everyone has trophies, medals and plaques…belts are where it is at, that or a jacket.
As a East coaster I like it on the east coast, but I think there should be opportunities to move the tournament around. It would have to be near a major hub so travel options are diverse and affordable. Possibly move it to the region with the highest graduating sr. class, or the state that did the best the previous year.
Let us vote on dirty takedown and scramble each week. Flo should pick 2 or 3 and the world votes.
Keep it up flo

"you reach out to the world, and they like you". True that! My whole team watches Flo everyday! This website is our wrestling voice and community! Thank you!

Great job guys! I would like to see this tournament broken up into 2 divisions: Cheaters and Non-Cheaters. The Non-Cheaters obviously would be comprised of kids who are true to their age and grade. The Cheaters would include the Massas and Lusters of the world who have been unfairly held back, a bunch of "sopres" who shave and have been driving for years. That is my only gripe. It would make it more fair across the board.

"I must have missed something", your name is a very accurate assumption. As I stated in my post I am completely on Flo's side. I just think that a more logical and patient approach could have been taken. You can say all this B.S. about Flo jumping out there and hittin the NHSCA tournament on the chin, and speak from your emotions all you want, but did Flo actually hurt the NHSCA tournament? I say no. I also think that the brash, aggressive approach Flo took by challenging the NHSCA tournament could have cost them a stronger and brighter future. I love our sport, and I feel that flo is leading the way for the best interests of it. I just think they could have gone about this tournament in a much more effective way. As we stand now, we had two National championships that split the talent pool and crowned no "true" national champion. Also, in Flo's pursuit to overtake the NHSCA tournament, they actually motivated them to improve, which doesn't help Flo's chances in ever becoming the one true National championship event. I want Flo to be THE high school National championship event. I think the approach taken this year, though respectable and bold, will ultimately lead to a future of diluted National championship events.

HEY
Flow great job. I was there. I dont know if many of the people who commented were. the big mini to me was a sign of the commitment you guys were willing to make in the event the numbers were larger, preventing you from being caught with your pants down. But you players at flow need to get scientific wit it.The first head line on your home page should be a video asking people to fill out a survey rating the tourney on some key areas.
This survey should ask (as well as other questions) if they attended FloNationals and it should include an opportunity to leave comments identifying needed improvements. With the wrestling community giving constructive criticism and the knowledge you guys gained from running it, next years will be even more of a success than this years FloNationals. I appreciate what you guys are doing for the sport of wrestling.
Keep up the good work

I must have missed something 3 years ago

FloNationals was in direct competition with the NHSCA tournament. Not only by having it on the same date (obvious) but also with every other aspect of the tournament. The (obviously lower) price point. The All-Class vs. separate classes. The area of the nation.

What i don't understand is why people keep saying "have it on a different weekend......you're just diluting the quality of wrestling....bla bla..." Crybabies. How in the heck does it dilute the wrestling? You either go to one or the other.....and In the style that Flo has consistently exhibited...they are not gonna take some pansy a$$ long term plan to make this much needed transition happen. They set their scopes on making a better tournament than the NHSCA tournament. That was their INTENTION. so it only makes sense to have it diametrically opposed to NHSCA tournament in every way...including the same date. What is so hard for people to understand about that. Good quality teams came all the way from California to compete in the FloNationals....do you think they did it by accident? a flip of the coin?? just dumb luck that they ended up at Flo?? ....and for having it on two different weekends.......do you think they have the cash laying around to do the whole trip again in two more weeks? It's either one or the other. Different dates had absolutely no bearing on who attended which.
The people that wanted to be a true "National Champions" attended the FloNationals. I say that because it was the only tournament which advertised itself as an all-class national tournament. People that attended the NHSCA tournament wanted to be the best freshman in the nation, sophmore in the nation, etc.... but not a true All-Class National Champ. Does the NCAA break up their tournament into redshirt-freshmen, freshmen, sopres, etc? Flo gave the fans and athletes something that they've wanted for a LONG time.....and environment where we can find out who is the best collegiate style HS wrestler in the United States.
So.....wake up and realize that it was not some silly accident that it just so happened to be on the same date. It's a dog-eat-dog world out there...and Flo pretty much just stepped right up to the "established tradition" and chin-checked it. If all you whiners don't see how this is progressive and good for the sport, then you need to go back to playing with your dollies....or some other NCLB sport like pop-warner football where everyone gets their six plays. babies.

Offer free entry and lodging to golden ticket winners. Give seniors incentive to come!

I love Flo, this site is great. I know on the surface and maybe below to the very skin of the bottom, that their intentions are directed toward the betterment of wrestling. However, wrestling, like any other sport, has it's established traditions. The national championship event put on by the NHSCA is the current tradition for "Nationals". To make athletes decide between the tradition that they've dreamt about for four years, and a feel-good first year tournament is unfair. This tournament should not have been held on the same day as NHSCA.
Look at it this way, inadvertantly, Flo improved NHSCA nationals. By flo bursting onto the scene and challeging the NHSCA nationals by having their tournament the same day, it forced the NHSCA to improve. They had to rise to the competition. If flo had scheduled for some later weekend, NHSCA would have stayed the same. People would have had the opprotuinty to see both tournaments and realize how much better flo was. Flo could have kept this going for three or four years, building their reputation and drowning the NHSCA tournament in its own blinded greed and corruption. Then, they could announce their tournament date as being the same as NHSCA's tournament date. This would have given people a much more solid base on which to make their decision. Flo would have been a proven tournament with four years under their belt. They would have had the hearts of the community (more-so than they do now) and they would have abolished the perception that the NHSCA tournament is Nationals.

seemd to me that canceling the big mini, and the small turnout showed you guys one thing...you need to be a little more careful about going outside of your core business. Head coaches got calls in VA beach in front of me and said I quote "the turnout at the Flo event was a big disappointment" do it a different week and you will have a nice event. Make people choose and you will continue to proove that all you guys are is a few funny guys with video cameras taping wrestling matches.

Mel 3 years ago

Offer the highest ranked in each weight a free room. No flashing lights or other stunts-make this about wrestling. No video of you walking around-show the wrestling. The interviews can be shown later. Tell us who is wrestling in a voice that can be heard over the crowd noise. Two cameras are enough if you show the highest seeded wrestlers. Why can't the highest seeded wrestle on the two mats you show?

agree with the first post 3 years ago

Having flonationals on the same weekend as high school nationals only served to water down both tournaments.

wrestlingworld 3 years ago

please keep it on the east coast

paco 3 years ago

more room for the wrestlers to wrestle out of bounds so they dont have to worry about the match next to them, and change sites, go to the west coast, midwest, east coast, it sucks traveling all the way to the east coast every year even though we know you have to travel to find good wrestling.

Idea 3 years ago

Belts to the winners – remember how pumped Herbert was about a chance to get a world championship belt

way more live feeds (i.e. a dedicated feed for each mat starting at the quarters, and starting at the semis a dedicated feed at each mat plus one for interviewing). Especially for the finals we didn't get to see the 3/4 matches because of interviews (if anything, 1/2 , 3/4, 5/6 , and 7/8 matches should all have dedicated feeds with one for interviews).

Also, the finals matches should just go from 103 to 285 OR post the finals schedule online!! Also, links to the bracket and online bout board should have been on the front page, along with someone online to communicate with people who have questions or requests (in a separate chat room though!).
Anyway it was a great first year, congrats Flo!

eliminating 103 is idiotic, probably 2/3 of the top 10 recruits every year started at 103 their freshman year. The top 103s are studs.

Suggestions 3 years ago

Make it the week after NHSCA. Make the finals more special, lights elevated mat or something. Get invites to all state placers everywhere.

Maybe 3 years ago

Maybe because there is so few wrestler in the country who actually weigh 103 or less.

i dont understand why they would ever eliminate 103.

Coach T Response 3 years ago

There is proposals to adjust the weights but nothing has been decided yet. Also, any weight class that has been changed is technically eliminated as well. The weight classes are adjusted and only proposal actually eliminates the lowest weight class.

What a great job all the people at Flo do to make wrestling easier to follow. Congrats on the first Flonationals and the spunk of getting it started. I have been out of wrestling for a few years now, but if it wasn't for Flowrestling I probally would not be in the wrestling scene anymore. Videos like throwback thursdays, dirty scamble and takedown, monday match of the week, and just the midwest and east coast coverages that a kid from the west only envisions what would be like. I check flo everyday and never have posted, but today I felt that Flo should know a kid from Libby, MT can still get that spark from wrestling on a site that has countless videos. To make it even better is it's free! Kudos to Flo and all that they do, and even if Martin has the dirtiest stache.

Whats flows postition on the new weights eliminating the 103 lb and adding a upper weight.

Excellent job overall, but I think flonationals.com could have been more up-to-date and reliable in regards to the information it provides. It still lets me try to register even now. I also remember seeing some contradicing information in different spots within the site.
