GREAT explanation Mike! What a mess that must have been to clean, I wonder if Lewis and Smith have ever gotten over that.

If I remember correctly (which by the way I wasn't born yet so no I couldn't) it actually involved Lewis winning the first match, then with seven seconds left in the second match, there was a controversial call. The call was disputed and Lee Roy Smith was down by a lot. Somehow though he managed to come back and win it in the last seven seconds. The two wrestled the third match in the best of three series, which Lee Roy Smith won. Therefore he should have won the spot on the team. However, Coach Gable protested the outcome of the second match and they determined that a whole new match should be wrestled. Lee Roy Smith also won this whole new match, so he should have gotten the spot. So then the second match was protested again, this time it went to court. The argument was that something was wrong with the outcome of the match and instead of wrestling a whole new match, the wrestlers should have rewrestled only the final seven seconds with the correct score. Randy Lewis had his significant advantage again and only had to win seven seconds of the match, that would give him the best 2 out of 3 in the series and give him the spot on the Olympic team.If I'm wrong can someone please correct me.I watched Randy Lewis' Olympic Final against the Japanese wrestler and the announcers explained this whole thing before the match. I remember it almost exactly because I couldn't comprehend how in anyone's mind this could be considered fair.

Another great match from the 1984 Olympic Trials. Dellagatta was super funky and Smith was super slick, and had some funk up his sleeve as well (1:07).There were so many great matches at this weight alone. It was hard to pick. I've been sitting here for an hour. Dellagatta/Burley were awesome matches as well. So was Smith/Burley. And of course Lewis/Smith...This match has a lot of action. Both guys are so good on their feet and Dellagatta's defense is unbelievable. His weakness IMO was par terre defense. Dellagatta is one of the few wrestlers to have beaten (actually pinned) Sergei Beloglazov.Special thanks to my friend John Tush for recommending a match from this series.Anyways, enjoy.
