At the dinner the night before the clash stared, Mark Schultz made an appearance to give a speech. This speech almost did not happen as Mark was very sick battling a bout a food poisoning. Mark shared many topics with us from his brother Dave, to coaching, to MMA, and more.

My brother wrestled @ Nova, I wrestled @ MD. I knew Mark and Dave very well. Salt of the earth people, would kill for their friends, no one is perfect!

Hey Mark,
Just watched the fight vs Gary Goodridge, haven't seen in a long time. Damn freaking awesome display and man Excellent takedowns. Just goes to show no matter how good the striker, if you are quick and great with shooting and takedowns it's going to the ground! Bar none

Hey Mark,
You are the Big shi*. Just some non-achieving hater in here. When they can walk and hit the mats like you then they can even maybe hold your jock. lol

sorry guys if my comments were "off color" or inappropriate for this forum. But I do want to thank Mr. Mark Schultz for teaching and showing exactly not to be in life. Yes as a child I too wanted to be an Olympian and yes I thought if I surrounded myself with the likes of mr. schultz(childhood idol) I could acheive my dream. the year I spent a nova watching the coaches behave made me reconsider my whole wrestling career and caused me to reexamine how devalued a wrestlers life can be. Therefore, they were forced to be servile to the ineptitude of John Dupont. No life for me, in retrospect I thank him and thank god each day, that I was able to make something of my life outside of the myopic world of grappling. thanks again

This is easily the best posting I have ever seen on Flow.

wasthere, your a coward as Tom Harris stated earlier.
Go home, we dont need little punk's like you to cast negative,
false statements about Mark Schultz and indirectly Dave Schultz.

Mark Schultz is an icon in the wrestling and jiu jitsu world.
I am more familiar with the latter as i trained jiu jitsu with him
many years ago as we both learned under Pedro Sauer.
This was a great speech and it was exciting to see something
current by him and that he seems to be doing well. eddie edmunds

Mark is a true CHAMPION! For him to complete this talk as sick as he was shows how much he loves the sport. Mark is a great guy!!! His story is GOLDEN!

My fav part..."people w/o a wrestling background aren't very tough."

Very good stuff.

To (?#11Wasthere......): Your comment may or may not be valid (I have no idea and no way of knowing); however, it is entirely inappropriate for this forum. If you wish to cast aspersions upon someone, it is only fair to do it when the other person has the opportunity to rebut your assertion (or in this case, your vague innuendo) and anyone listening or reading has the opportunity to hear both sides. Furthermore, only a jealous person or a coward would take such a cheap shot--whether you believe it to be true or not. And finally, I think your anonymous post (?#11Wasthere......) speaks volumes concerning your character.

Mark is as tough as they get. I had the privilege to wrestle for him at Villanova and Team Foxcatcher. He and his brother were always an inspiration and clearly men with a hearts of gold.

Great speech man, I miss Dave very much.
I remember when he put this figure 4 hold on me in High School, I thought
he was going to break my back, but I knew Dave wouldn't hurt me he was a
great human being who really loved people no matter where you were from.
I can't wait for the movie and hope to see you in the near future.
God bless you and your family.
Your friend always, Isam

Everything about that video is unreal. Amazing content to his speech. Amazing that he willed his stomach into not revolting.

Great talk! Mark & Dave Schultz are my heroes. Dave was the best technical coach in the world. Mark was the most inspirational coach in the world. Mark was such a great athlete, I could not imitate his moves, eg. the hip heist on a standup. They were always honest and nice. Please have Mark give more talks. Mark has lots of inspirational advice. He has a lot more to talk about the transition from gymnast to wrestler, Coach Abel at Oklahoma, coaching at Stanford, BYU & Villanova. He also has lots of good stories about Dave's career etc. Mark's perpectives on conditioning, developing technique, maintaining a high level of psychological intensity are great. It is too bad he had a stomach flu at the time of this talk. When he feels well his talks are very funny. He is so brutally honest about what he and other people really think and say etc.

Very painful to watch. And being at one of the front tables...a little nerve racking waiting for him to vomit. I went to the bathroom at the end of his speech and Mark was already in one of the stalls and the sounds of him vomiting...let's just say it has been a long time since I have heard such a "gut wrenching" performance. I'm surprised that he wasnt hospitalized afterwards.

I truly believe that....People who have wrestled...really wrestled...know how to sacrifice, commit, and endure. It's not just about winning matches, its about about having good character.

Tony G 4 years ago

This is tough to watch, I keep waiting for him to chuck!

Gromit 4 years ago

what a trooper. the guy was obviously in some pain w/ stomach cramps, yet he toughed it out, honoring his commitment to speak.

...I can't wait for the movie (foxcatcher?) to come out. I hear it's being made by Bennett Miller, the guy who directed the academy award winning biopic "Capote " (w/ Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote while researching/writing his book "In Cold Blood" )

One of my two wrestling heroes growing up, the other of course being his brother Dave. God Bless the entire Schultz family, past and present.

Compare this real person to the fake, hyped up personalities we're exposed to in the media all the time. Refreshing.

Great Stuff.

If that dosent show you how tough wrestlers are, nothing will. Dave, you and your brother were my camp councilors back in 86/87 at Villanova. I agree, the minute Dupont came around and worse yet the minute he put his hands on us you knew there was something wrong about him. Was very sorry to hear about what took place. Hopefully you will be joined in the after life with your brother, sure seems he is still part of your every day life. Good to see.....Take care...and thank you. Speach was priceless!
