One of the worst officiating I have ever seen. Pathetic.

25+ Year Ref 3 years ago

90% of you guys that commented about a bad call don't even know the rule about stalling. And 99% of you guys don't have the balls to referee even if you knew the rules. The guy did a fine job reffing.

"IF THE SCORE IS WITHIN ONE POINT, THE REF'S IN OHIO WILL CALL STALLING AND PUT IT INTO OT NO MATTER WHAT"...What we learned is... that if you don't work the enitre match in Ohio, you get called for stalling. That is why the Most NCAA Champs come from OHIO!!! Print IT!

Ian never made an attempt to come up off the legs on the 1st warning & all he did was base out on the 2nd stalling call.

I hate bad refs 4 years ago

Wow!!! The first stall call should have never been called, then it would have never been a situation where the 2nd would have sent the match into OT. The 2nd stall can be argued for, however, its a judgement call when a kid is being the agressor for most of the mat. You can see it when the ref calls the 2nd stalling at the end of match hes actually EXCITED to send the match into OT...Horrible call in my opinion.

Wow! This ref accomplished his goal and made himself the focal point, luckily maytingly and miller were present for his greatness!

Being a former wrestler and having 35 pounds on ian i thought maybe i could go wrestle a few matches with him boy what a dumb idea the boy is very very strong 2 days later i had 2 get my back and neck adjusted at the chiropractor and it cost me 50 bucks think ill stick 2 the excercise bike

after i wrestled miller all i could say was wow hes strong lol

WOW that ref should give the money back to the MIT because he BLOWS..........nice job ian. OHio refs need to get better. They try to turn every match into the closest match by making horrific calls. Ohio refs need to stop calling stalling on the top man when he is looking for a turn.

I agree very, very bad call at the end to send it into overtime. I'm glad the wrestler that should have won prevailed in the end. One of those no harm no foul kind of things. Congrats to Miller.

bottom line the stall call was wrong. both kids worked very hard the entire match and a glory seeking ref should not put himself in the match. these kids work harder than most people realize and for the ref to take that from them is flat wrong PERIOD.

Whateverr: miller seems to have plenty of talent...he just needs to add a little more muscle to his frame.

I thought this was the one of the worst stall calls I've ever seen. Maybe not as bad as this one in the New Jersey State Finals though : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt1GMcd12Qg

Yes, bad stall call IMHO...still goes to show that you don't "shut down", keep wrestling the whole six minutes.

Casey,
Yes, I saw the change in Miller's strategy to give up the takedown and go with the wide base. That was rather smart in my opinion. The point I was making was that the ref did not ding him while in the wide base (spread eagle). He waited until he was based up and clearly not stalling at that point. The ref missed his legitimate window for the stall call and should have left the wrestlers alone then. This "I'm not going to let this kid stall his way to victory" mentality sometimes swings too far the other way. Besides, Miller had earned some leniency IMO with his much greater action during the previous 5 min and 55 secs.

embarrassed:
i think the stall call was questionable but not as bad as you made it out to be. miller had been awarded 2 backs (which appeared to be the right call, albeit a close one), giving him a 7 to 3 lead, and he then changed his style from aggressor to defender - e.g., he let mattingly up, he then attempted to clamp on his arm, toward slowing him down, he then gave up an easy takedown, and he then went wide base for the remaining ten seconds or so of the match. so while i'm not saying that the stall call was clear (or even the right call, in my opinion), there was at least some basis for it.
in any event, these are two good kids, with strong pedigrees, and both are well-coached. i enjoyed the match, and will look forward to following both for the rest of their careers.
and what a tough draw (both ways) for round 2...
and zeb, coming from a wrestling family, i understand how hard it can be to watch a brother, cousin, etc. go at it. (per my experience, it's harder to watch than it is to actually wrestle.)

miller is not very talented...its easy to look that good when you get as many breaks as he did during the match

First of all I agree Miller was the agressor thruout the match . But I also agree with the stalling call . In the end Miller outworked him in the OT too ,and won the match .
Nice job!

Zeb- you need to take this kid to burnys to get tightened up.....he is an incredible talent and fun to watch, you must be very proud.

Ok, clearly I agree with the last post, but this site can help officials see how much better they can do, I should have not been ridiculing the official even though Ian is family, I was wrong, just as the official was wrong for a stall call as time expires to send the match into OT. There are good officials in Ohio (Jaksetic's, Anthony's, Dunlap, Derr, Bassinger, the list goes on) but bottom line is they are way too involved in so many of these matches. Quite frankly it is pretty upsetting to me and one of the reason's I am out of coaching.

...to be an official after seeing this debacle. Green outworked red the whole match and the ref makes a last second stall call to deliberately send it into overtime. Green was based up with red legs in for less than five seconds before the call. How could he possible be stalling by any refs definition. The ref tried to make himself greater factor and interfered with the natural course of the action in my opinion. Fortunately, the guy kept working and got the win. I hope the refs colleagues call him on the carpet for that one and not give the perfunctory "good call" to his face and ridicule behind his back. Make him accountable and a better ref. The kids depend on the process.
