Iowa sucks! They don't understand how to wrestle with their feet. They think that being group of dirty dilettantes will enable them to achieve lexical dominance over the cosmic sphere of the triple bin take-down pin. Ya know what, man? Iowa is great. They just need to have more fruitloops. Slaton is my favorite fruitloop. I mean, hell, the dude went to the finals. That dude kicked the hell out of me in when I wrestled him. I was freakin' trying to claw my way off the damn mat. So what? He got stuck in an eyeblink...no problem, he'll come back and win it next year (I sure won't) and Metcalf will get stuck by Caldwell in about 30 seconds in the semis |

Dear champs: But what if, hypothetically speaking, Brands got all 10 freshmen at Iowa to not only start but: they all won Nationals all four years by pinning through every round in 4 seconds each match, then all 10 won the Worlds by pinning everybody there in 3 seconds each (touch fall in freestyle allows for faster falls), then they all won the Olympics in the same fashion...then they all went on to be coaches and won team titles for the next 50 years in not only wrestling but football and baseball too. And no team title race in ANY sport was closer than 50,000 points. Would Brands be satisfied then? |

brands may come off harsh, mean, whatever adjective you want to put on him, but from every waking moment the guy is a raw competitor. It doesn't matter what it is, he is in it to win it. I used to play paintball with the guy and you would have thought he just lost in the gold medal round of the olympics if we lost 1 paintball game. |

ci is right. They do have fun. Brands is actually a very funny guy, but also a very serious competitor. I was at a practice earlier this year and Brands was cracking some jokes before practice and crackin the place up. However, when those guys step on the mat, whether in practice or competition, they are all business. It is true that they will never be totally satisfied because there is always room for improvement. The goal ever since Gable took over has been 10 National Champs. Two National Champs and a team title is great, but it's a long way from 10. Even if they do get 10, they still won't be totally satisfied because then they'll want 10 the next year who pin their way through the tournament and go undefeated throughout the season and on and on and on. Brands and the Hawks are never completely satisfied, and like frydaze said, "that is why Iowa is Iowa and everybody else just that." |

Believe me ,these guys have fun. They are some free spirited characters. In fact, when Tom points out that Jay Borscell is craz and starts to smile,I imagine Jay is in the background trying to make Tom laugh. And Tom Brands unbelievably cares about his wrestlers. He is a very good man. |

Of coarse wrestling is about having fun... there's no point in doing it if it's not fun, but... I think you have to have a "never-satisfied" attitude. Not just in wrestling, but in anything. That's how you get better, that's how you get to the top... that's why Iowa is back at the top, and that's why Metcalf is at the top. Having that kind of attitude is equally as important as having fun. Winning is fun!(refering to the comment about the iowa guys never seeming happy) |
