I don't really like Paulson's style either, but how can you knock him when he is our representative? If Metcalf or Caldwell are so much better than him, then beat him.

Go to themat.com and listen to the interviews...Zeke said that Varner should not have went for the foot sweep, because he didn't need it. When Sanderson was asked the same question, he basically said that is was good he went for it because he wrestles well there and didn't want to go to the ball grab...he just didn't score that time. Seems like a fundamental difference in philosophy among the coaching staff. not good.

I thought Paulson actually did OK in his match, needs to keep those guys off his legs a bit better. He's still not an offensive dynamo but I've seen worse from him. Unfortunately under these rules you don't have to score a lot, you have to score at the right time... like Taghavi and Gatsalov.

Slay, shave of that faux hawk. You look like a tool.

Couldn't agree more. We need a coaching and mentality change. We were in much better shape with Brands in there than Zeke or Slay. Slay should not be making excuses for US losses in international competition. There is no excuse. To win in wrestling, you have to score. If a wrestler doesn't try with every fiber of his being to win, and he loses, there is NO excuse. I say if a guy like Paulson doesn't want to wrestle in a match and just wants to sit there on the mat like a dumbell, a guy like Za or Metcalf should be stuck in his place, because those guys actually make an active effort to win. ASK HENRY CEJUDO, TO SCORE IS TO WIN! Let's bring in John Smith and the Brands brothers and make USA wrestling into a world powerhouse.

Couldn't agree more. We need John Smith or an Iowa boy or maybe we should recruit Beloglazov as our national coach. Not Zeke, and definitely not Slay. Slay never was a high scoring wrestler. Just watch his matches against Branch in the NCAA finals and against Saitiev in the Olympics. I'm not taking anything away from Slay here, but most guys aren't defensive tanks, and if you look back through the history of wrestling, the greatest wrestlers have been guys who rack up the points in an aggressive or forward manner, save maybe Lee Kemp, because he was a freak. The truth is, I believe that Felix and Varner have the ability to take their wrestling to another level under the right circumstance. I don't feel that Paulson does, just because I've seen him wrestle so many times, including in person, and even under the supreme coaching of guys like Bobby Douglas or Cael, he just sits there and does nothing. Craig Henning was robbed against Paulson in the NCAA finals a few years back, and I'm still sore about that, and I'm sore about Metcalf losing to Paulson who didn't want to wrestle at all at the trails, and I'm sore about coaching changes midstream and I'm sore about a lot of things in American wrestling right now. We need to cut the bulls hit and the politics and excuses and get down to business. Ask Henry Cejudo, he'll tell you that to score is to win.

Blame it on the majority of the HS coaches in the US who are too lazy to coach their kids in the international styles. They blame the rule changes, but in reality its because their lazy butts don't want to put any extra time in.

thats all we're getting any good at is push outs...that absolutely sucks!! also, i'm getting sick of people blaming our lame wrestling on inexpierience...look at our results at worlds pre-2000...we did just fine. all of our athletes in that time competed in collegiate folkstyle all through school..and now we start sucking internationally, and people point fingers at folkstyle and its bullcrap..to name a few...look at gable, kemp, smith, schultz, baumgardner, brands, cross...if anything, they didnt have as much freestyle exsposure as kids today do, but again...i think our international wrestling sucks right now..

Bronzers   September 21 at 10:28am
why the two bronze medalists? They don't want to take the time to wrestle one more match? Just seems weird to have two 3rd placers...no other sport does that. Anyone know why?

Listening to Brandon Slay make excuses like the Americans need more experiance scoring in the last 15 seconds is insane.Paulson did nothing offensively the entire match. The Russians Iranians are still the agressors, they score early then depending on the opponent continue to score or they strategize, they dont wait until 15 seconds. You have 2 minutes attack attack attack! Watch Gable, Wells,Petersons, Kemp,Schultz,Monday,Smith,Baum, Jones,Brands,Mcilravy,Gutches,Jackson,Neal,Cross Sanderson all are offensive first wrestlers. The Russians dictate the match they are always looking to score.Stop making excuses Brandon these are full time athletes. the Mentality must change
