Third in the three-part series
UNITY WITHIN THE COACHING STAFF
POSITIVE, POSITIVE, POSITIVE
THEY'RE KIDS, THEY WANT DISCIPLINE AND FUN!
In setting up this year's team, we wanted to make sure there was a structure in place. A structure with reasonable rules and some leeway. I've never been one of those "rules for the sake of rules" kind of person. I hated it growing up, and I vowed to make sure my wrestlers don't have that atmosphere on the team. So we made things simple, and came up with three rules:

I made a mistake this year. I should’ve bought new running shoes. I had a nice pair last year. They were a little old and worn out since I took them from my dad. Eventually they got so beat up that I had talking shoes and had to toss them. When the school year started I was given the standard issue shoe. No matter what size I got, the shoe didn’t fit. My foot cramped up and I couldn’t run more than a mile. I’ve probably run a total of 40 miles this year. I love running. I made a… more »
Tis better to give than receive
December 24, 2007
What’s the difference between a fan and a supporter? Seventh grade humor aside, to my mind, there is a clear difference. A fan takes and a supporter gives. Haven’t we been taught since we were kids that it’s better to give than to receive? It’s the season for giving and here are some opportunities for you to give to the sport of wrestling.

Hello Again Everyone
December 23, 2007
Hello again everyone, it has been quite a while since you have heard from me. So I thought maybe as my present to you I would give you a little insight into whats going on in my life. I have had a great fall, it has been both productive and entertaining. I have gotten to compete a lot, travel and make many new friends. Right now as I write this blog I am sitting in Keith Gavin's living room. I have been in Pittsburgh the last six days training with Keith and Jake Herbert. I have gotten in a lot… more »
My First Youth Tournament
December 22, 2007
Im excited to do my first Youth Tournament. It is called the Midwest Open and is going to take place in Evanston IL. It will be a K-8th grade tournament on December 29th. It is also a qualifier tournament for the top 3 placers to go to the National Youth Tournament. It will be cool to go from Kindergartners wrestling at the Midwest Open to Olympic hopefuls wrestling at the Midlands. That is the full spectrum of athletes. This should be interesting. I hope a lot of the kids come out to see the finals for Midlands after the Midwest… more »
Fake blog post
December 18, 2007
Oh my god you aren't actually going to click on this are you? Don't get fooled by it. The post is clearly a fake. I bet when you click on it nothing comes up at all. Or maybe it sends you to some you tube video of a midget dancing. I certainly wouldn't click on it if I were you.
Oh you fool!
Yes, this is my fake blog post. I actually have nothing important to say this week. Happy holidays to everyone and you can keep reading if you like. I know it's… more »

A Wrestling Carol
Scene 1 Copperfield College wrestling coach, Bob Coachit, is working with his team on Christmas Eve. Tim Tinny, his 125 pounder, is leaning on crutches watching the practice (knee surgery). Enter athletic director Ebenezer Kilwrestling.
Kilwrestling: “Coach, can I see you in your office, please?â€
Coachit: “Sure, boss, what’s up?â€
Kilwrestling: “Let’s wait until we get in your office.â€
They enter Coachit’s office and Kilwrestling closes the door.
Kilwrestling: “Bob, I’ve come to a decision – what with proportionality,… more »

East Meets West
December 12, 2007
Reno Tournament of Champions is coming next week and Im gearing up for another huge national tournament. We will have wrestlers from the east coast matching up against wrestlers from California Utah and Oregon. This will be incredible.
But before I get too excited I need to snap back to reality.
It is about 2:31 AM and Im getting ready for my trip out to Cleveland for the Super 8s at St. Edds. Im gathering all my equipment for my early morning flight out of Austin. On Monday I kinda relaxed for the first time since… more »

TAKE IT EASY!
December 11, 2007
Hard work is a cure all. When I have problems I don't talk about them, I work out. That's what guys do.
But seriously, hard work is definitely not a cure all. In fact sometimes working hard just creates more problems. There are tons of hard workers in sweatshops. The harder they work the more they get trapped in helplessness. When I face difficulties, I come up with a good well-planned and well-timed solution. But usually I cry them out before doing that.
What I want to focus on is working smart. What exactly… more »

UNITY WITHIN THE COACHING STAFF
POSITIVE, POSITIVE, POSITIVE
THEY'RE KIDS, THEY WANT DISCIPLINE AND FUN!
When you focus on positive energy, I focus on three things:
Positive Recruitment
Positive Retainment
Positive Reinforcement
First and foremost. A wrestling team needs bodies. It's simple. In order to have a full team you need 14 different bodies, 14 different weights. If you are not in Ohio or Pennsylvania, it's likely you may have to recruit at least a… more »

How Iowa vs. Iowa State could have been better
December 10, 2007
Another Iowa/Iowa State wrestling dual meet is in the books and the Hawkeyes have prevailed. There is a strong possibility that they will move into the number one spot in the rankings especially since Oklahoma State lost.
With 9,000 fans in attendance the meet was a sellout – sort of. Iowa State has chosen to “curtain off†5,000 seats in Hilton Coliseum to create a more “intimate†atmosphere for wrestling meets. They also moved the mat completely to one end so that the view would be better for all attendees – but especially for season ticket… more »

Nothing is Guaranteed
December 4, 2007
Hello again all. Wrestling season is in full swing everywhere but I can't help but to be infatuated with college football. Of course, I'm not one to play favorites but I think it's either the inconsistency or the pure randomness of this year's football season that's inspiring me now. This year in college football has brought with it some of the largest upsets, exciting games, and unexpected title contenders that we, as observers, have ever seen. No one likes to claim they take rankings into consideration but I have never seen such a fluctuation of numbers in rankings. Teams have… more »
Who to blindly follow?
December 4, 2007
Disclaimer: Before reading this article I think you should know that my last girlfriend dumped me because "I don't listen to anyone and I do whatever I want". Don't take anything I say literally and certainly don't adhere to my advice.
I have some issues with authority figures and authority in general. I believe the true intent of school is not increasing knowledge and understanding. Think about it now as I describe it. You go to school, teachers get you in lines, they tell you what to do, they train you, when you fall out of line… more »

Ironman Is Coming!
December 4, 2007
The standard of how it should be done is coming. The Walsh Jesuit Ironman tournament constantly improves on itself. This year they will have live streaming videos of the gym covering four mats at a time. Furthermore their live text coverage of each mat in progress is unreal....How do I know? Well I have never been but coaches, photographers, tournament directors, athletes and press people...all who i trust have told me so. You can get the coverage at home as well: http://www.walshironman.com/rscoreboard.php . I cant wait to cover the tournament for the first time and talk to all the top… more »
Viva Las Vegas
December 3, 2007
Two weeks since the last post...and a lot of wrestling later, it definitely feels like my guys are making some big strides.
The Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational has become THE premier early season tournament. It is great for the sport, as teams from all over the country and all divisions that wouldn't normally see each other get to compete against one another. The caliber of the tournament is phenomenal. If you have some time go watch the finals matches. There was some really exciting wrestling from 125 through Heavyweight. I especially recommend the Poeta vs. Gillespie… more »

There is something you're always supposed to do whenever you start something new. I know this. What it is I can't quite say. I think it's take a shower, yeah definitely take a shower. Before you get into a new relationship, the start of a new season, or even when you just want to start your homework you got to do this one thing. Sometimes I forget to shower. That's why I'm going to take one right now.
Ahh.. much better. While I was taking a shower I realized that it wasn't taking a shower that you… more »
