Here we go again.

Well the trip to Belarus was great. I wrestled alright for the first tournament of the season, but I came up short in the finals against a wrestler from Russia. I just want to say that I am getting sick and tired of placing 2nd this year. I was second in Belarus, the Pan Am Games, the World Team Trials, and Ukraine. Second place is not all that bad because it means I am doing some things right I guess, but I need to start winning everything. Right now I am on the… more »

Dont Call It Funk

At the super 32 this weekend I saw some great matches and some really solid wrestling. It was so much fun to see all these great wrestlers go at it. There was one in particular that made me laugh and cheer more than any of them. That was with the senior Tony Jameson. You cant call it funk cause it aint. It something that is totally different. His flips turns that reminds me of a circus more than a wrestling match. Is it cocky maybe but it is still fun.

These wrestlers need your help

The following was posted on one of the wrestling forums I frequent. Friends, those two lovely young women you see in my profile photo and I once lost our home to fire. I vividly remember the outpouring of help and support we got from family, friends and the community afterwards. Let’s show this coach and his kids the kind of people that are in the wrestling community. I’m writing a check as soon as this is posted – what about you?

A conversation with Mike Duroe – part 2

When you enter the lobby of the Cornell College gymnasium it resembles dozens of other small college or high school gyms – right down to the trophy case. However, if you’re a wrestling fan you’ll notice a couple of astonishing exceptions. First, there are the two national championship trophies from 1947 – the NCAA and the AAU. Then there are the induction plaques from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum for Distinguished Members coach Paul Scott and wrestler Lloyd Appleton (Coach Richard Barker and wrestler Lowell Lange… more »

Getting ready to Rumble

I am getting exctied because I finally get to compete really soon. In less than two weeks I get to go wrestle in teh Sunkist Open, then the week after will be the Clansmen invite in Vancouver. Then staying at the Olympic training center for a week. Then the next weekend is the NYAC. Lots of matches in a short amount of time, but I finally get to try out everything I have been working on since I started wrestling freestyle again and see if it is going to work. I often hear that my style of wrestling will not… more »

A conversation with Mike Duroe – part 1

I had no idea what to expect when I sat down in Mike Duroe’s office to “chat about wrestling”. Mike is the head wrestling coach at Cornell College and has coached at all levels of the sport since 1980 - including serving on the staffs of three Olympic teams and as the national resident freestyle coach at the Olympic Training Center.

It doesn’t take long before the passion becomes evident. He just simply loves wrestling and loves teaching it. He also wants to see the sport… more »

Wrestling is my life and my name is Andy Hrovat. Ever since I was 5
years old all I ever wanted to do was wrestle and now that I am 27 the
feeling is the same. Over the past year I have had some of the best
wrestling experiences of my life. I won the world team trials, I
wrestled in the World Championships, the World Cup, and the Pan
American Games; I wrestled in Azerbaijan, China, Iran, Russia (twice),
Ukraine, and Brazil. I will wrestle anyone and I will go anywhere… more »

Flowrestling

Martin Floreani must certainly be working harder than anyone in the country to promote wrestling. If you’re a wrestling fan and haven’t yet been to www.flowrestling.com - go now. It’s a treasure trove of match videos (including the 1972 Olympics), unique interviews, photographs and articles. Martin’s series of video interviews with national team members and coaches leading up to Baku were stirring.

Here’s a sample.

A Tribute to Heskett

October 4, 2007

When I was entering my final year at Cal Poly I heard we were getting this National Champion from Iowa State to be our coach. Ironically I was always pretty ignorant who was who in the wrestling world so I really didnt know what to expect from this 165lber Joe Heskett.

So Joe came in and I got to know him what struck me about him was his ability to face failure in the face until he succeeded. He would do this playing cards or playing a game or on the mat. At Iowa State Joe… more »

What I hope to see this season.

The first college wrestling matches are about a month away. Here are some things I hope I’ll see this year.

Record-breaking attendance nationwide

There are only two certainties – The DI Nationals will sell out and the University of Iowa will lead the nation in dual meet attendance. My first hope is for attendance at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic to top 8,900. Have you bought your tickets yet? Go to http://www.nwcaonline.com/allstarclassic.cfm to order. Remember that if you want to support this pivotal event in the fight to save University of… more »
