A glossary of wrestling terms for the new fan

Takedown – what you do with any Tom Brands quote if you are a smart sports writer.

Single – what a wrestler is destined to be if not showering after every workout.

Reversal – The Steve Mocco transfer from Iowa to Oklahoma State as opposed to the Ray Brinzer transfer from Oklahoma State to Iowa.

Pin – sadly, what you can hear drop at many college dual wrestling meets.

Who does he think he is?

Matt Azevedo had the audacity to do what he wanted. Who did he think he was? He was a good to mediocre Big XII wrestler who never even became a Division 1 All-American. What was he thinking trying to wrestle at the next level? Really all he was doing was taking up space and others people's time in a sport where it just wasnt meant to be.

He still was just hanging on to that habit of competition. (He never was a state champ either but placing in the state of California meant he could at least… more »

Don’t know much about history

I swapped a couple of emails with Mark Palmer Saturday. Mark is a staff writer for revwrestling.com whose Rev Rewind articles are among my favorite writings about the history of wrestling. (Mark’s latest is about Harold Henson, the first African-American to wrestle in the NCAA championships:

From our online discussions came a question, “Just how important is it for young wrestlers and fans to know the history of the oldest sport in… more »

Fire Fire and Hire Hire

It is a beautiful thing when coaches get fired and new ones get hired. I like when things get shaken up because anyway you cut it there are some 80 odd teams in D1 wrestling and there are 40 head coaches whose teams finished in the bottom half. Furthermore there are at least 20 head coaches whose teams finished in the bottom half in consecutive years. This means their are plenty of head coaches who arent up to par and need to be replaced. This is a sign of a healthy sport. What isnt a sign of a healthy sport… more »

A fan is a fan, is a fan

… and wrestling is wrestling.

I attended the 2008 wrestling Dream Team Classic in Iowa City Saturday night. The twelve-year-old event pits a team of national high school all stars against an all-star team from the host state. This year’s edition featured 13 of the 14 nationally number-one rated wrestlers and had two #1 vs. #2 matches. For complete results see The Predicament at http://www.thepredicament.com.

The West High School gym was almost completely full and it was an interesting mix of fans. Since… more »

Message #66 - Pretend You Have an "S" on Your Chest

Your Not Really Pretending...What You're Really Doing is Visualizing...

There is a Superman inside of all of us...But First we Must Discover Him...and Believe.

The difference between Clark Kent and Superman is their attitude and personality. Clark has one attitude and personality and Superman has another. It is the same with each of us. We all have to first realize we have a Superman inside us and then we must learn to develop and train our Superman.

When a job calls for Superman...Superman must show up. No excuses, it doesn't matter… more »

Tons of Ideas

I got Ideas, you got Ideas...Everyone has ideas. Some Ideas are great....they are thought out, have an simple element to them, some are long term, and have many layers of success going for them. Some are faddy and ridiculous and thought out by people who are too smart for their own good or not educated enough.

Most ideas are hard to implement but easy to talk about. And some ideas are stolen like this one....so this is MY idea.

I was sitting at Reno World Championship Tournament booth this past weekend and I… more »

Message # 65 - Logic You're Not Wanted Here!

If Only We Could Have the Faith as a Little Child and Believe in Our Dreams...

Consider These Thoughts from Some Accomplished People:

I tell people I'm too stupid to know what's impossible. I have ridiculously large dreams, and half the time they come true. --Debi Thomas, World Figure Skating Champion.

Ideals (like Dreams) are like the stars: we never reach them, but like the mariners of the sea, we chart our course by them. --Carl Schurz, Missourt Senator from 1869 to 1875. (blue is my comment)

This and that

Adam Frey

Shortly after the NCAA Championships Cornell University wrestler, Adam Frey, was in a car accident. His injuries were not life threatening, but an MRI revealed three tumors that subsequent testing revealed to be Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Danielle Hobeika immediately spread the word and created a website for Adam who is sharing his battle with the world through his blog. Please take a few minutes and visit the site and pass along your words of encouragement.

Message #64 - Sometimes You Have to Go To The Deep Water to Catch the Big Fish!

Lee Kemp | Profile
April 4, 2008

By Staying in the Shallow Water (where it's safe and little risk) You'll Only Catch the Small Fish.

Get in the boat and leave the safety and comfort of the shore and go after the Really BIG Fish.

The further you go out the deeper the water and the more risk and uncetainty.

The further you go out the more doubt and fear of the unknown.

Staying on the shore you'll be sure to catch some fish...really small ones though.

Are really small ones OK… more »

This Very Moment is the Only Thing You Can Really Control. It's Called "RIGHT NOW!" That's it! You only Have Control of THIS MOMENT IN TIME.

Obviously YOU can't Change the PAST and YOU can't Predict FUTURE events.

You CAN, however, have a Great impact on Future events by what you do RIGHT NOW!

OUR LIFE AS IT STANDS RIGHT NOW IS A SUM TOTAL OF ALL THE CHOICES, EFFORTS AND ACTIONS WE'VE MADE AT EVERY MOMENT IN TIME OF OUR LIFE!!!

Think about everything that's happened to… more »

Message # 62 - Just How Good Do You Have To Be?

April 1, 2008

It's Not Good Enough That You Learn Your Craft so Well That You Get It Right Almost All The Time...But That You Learn Your Craft so Well That You Can't Get it Wrong!

I Learned That There's a Big Difference Between the Two From John Taylor, a high school team mate from my alma matter, Chardon High School.

What do I mean by this?:

Learning something well enough that we get it right almost all the time still leaves room for mistakes and errors. After all "No Body's Perfect"...Right?...Wrong...You… more »

In St. Louis when I was covering the NCAAs I received an email that I found interesting to me. It was from the NWMA (National Wrestling Media Association). It was a press release on giving the media awards for 2007-8 year. I opened it eagerly knowing that it was going to be pretty tough to snub flowrestling again this year on every single award including web site of the year. But sure enough the powers at be found a way.

This act is significant because it shows how the powers at be are trying to "rig… more »
