"What Are College Wrestlers Supposed to Do After Graduation?"

Rick Addante | Profile
December 30, 2008

I begin this blog with the reference to the inspiration for it, which was a blogged question of Pat Hitchens ( What Are College Wrestlers Supposed to Do After Graduation?), where he asked the following questions: “I am a fan of a lot of sports, and I ask myself, what is the draw to be a really bad-ass wrestler. I mean, what is there to look forward to after college graduation for the country's best. Is it all MMA now? Or is there something else?” Followed by a response by Alan Zorthian that included the following: “I guess one tries… more »

Midlands Preview

Ian McCutcheon | Profile
December 29, 2008

Ian McCutcheon Flowrestling.org Going into its 46th year, the Midlands is the most tradition-rich in season tournament in college wrestling. Looking at a list of former Midlands champions is simply a who’s who in the history of our sport. While a Midlands title is hardly the ultimate goal, it is a feather in your cap that means just a little bit more than most tournament titles. The theme of this year’s Midlands is uncertainty. Now is the time of the year where the picture starts to clear up as we near the end of the non-conference and tournament portion of… more »

There are 56 days and the snow has melted abit. Just as everybody is settling down to a mid winters break and a remnant or two of football. Our battle plans are just begun. We need a solid week on our feet, we also need a solid week on excellent standup. We need a recommitment to the very nature of our journey, " Know yourself, know your enemy, and you will control 100 battles in 100 sorties. Remember to appreciate the scenenary along the way as the road is covered. The goal, the mountain, the unattainable measure. "It is not… more »

Most high school's wrestling seasons are now just about half over. This is a time of year to evaluate the team and each individual. It is now time to make improvements. Don't wait! Cleveland's wether is crazy! Ice storms, 5 degrees, 55 degrees, snow, sun--all of this makes Northeastern Ohio wrestlers tough and crazy like the weather. St. Eds is getting ready for the Greatest Show on Earth-the MIT. College wrestlers are getting ready for their holiday tournaments-Midlands, and Southern Shuffle. Good Luck to everyone! more »

When I see 21 freshmen on our roster, I get excited about the future. Not only do we have the numbers, but we have a talented crew to work with. It is very important to think about summer wrestling over the next couple of years. I strongly recommend going to a camp or competing in the Milan Summer Wrestling League which is 6 weeks long! As coaches, we will try to get you as many matches as possible during a season by going to JV tournaments. If you are lucky enough to make the varsity squad, the mat experience you… more »

Trenton Rematch 12-17-2008 The much anticipated rematch. The last match ends with us on top 36-35 because one of our kids wrestling up a weight fights to not get pinned and instead gets teched, that was the difference. So Tuesday nights practice leading up to the rematch was intense. It felt like the walls of the room were going to just explode. Everyone was all out brawling, honestly that level of intensity I have never seen in that room, never, before. So now these kids are ready to break bricks and eat nails, yes, we are ready for Trenton, kids… more »

We returned from the western slope. The boys competed well. My hats off to Cory Casady the upper weights OW at 152. Cory had three state champs in his weight and he did not give up an offensive point. Congrats to Courtland Hacker, Gabe Gomez, Nick Zissimos and Eric Mortensen who all came home with medals. We are really starting to come together. more »

Well, what a heartbreaking way to lose a tourney. ONE point..............by criteria. But it does prove what this team is capable of. We'll get finished with Greencastle, break the season win record, then re-charge our batteries and get ready for the final push. Expecting big things from these guys. more »

Thank goodness we got out of the first round alive   Weeping Water has put together a nice team and challenged us early and often. Louisville and Conestroga were not much of a threat to compete with us. Our guys looked a little sluggish for the start and struggled to do some things right. Thank God in this sport there is always another chance to improve. See ya Friday.   Plattsmouth 3-0   Weeping Water 2-1 score  vs Plattsmouth37 -29   Conestoga 1-2 score vs. Platsmouth 68-6   Louisville 0-3 score vs. Plattsmouth  71-0 more »

Probably the toughest day yet

Keith Hotvedt | Profile
December 16, 2008

There are 67 days to our Team District. The fella's were bouncing off of the walls today, Boss. Great day for battle. Two new old Heavies Wrestled off for the Dual meet tomorrow. Wrestle offs are without a doubt as tipfieing as the actual matches in a young season. Terror aboard flight 285 to Tittabiwasii, yeah something like that. Snow is falling in amounts to bring a probable delay to tomorrows festivities. The largest detriment to this young season has been a lack of grade point average for eleven of our rocks. In to each life a little rain must… more »

Part 1-The Season

December 16, 2008

1st Period is over-where do we stand on our journey to Lakeland? The season is a long process and growth of a team or team member depends on what he will do over the winter break. Will he sleep in or will he get out of bed and make a commitment to push himself take the next step in becoming a better wrestler, a champion. Until now, a wrester has gone through the ups and downs of early season matches and tournaments, but the most important thing that they have done is found their weaknesses and what they need to… more »

December 12, 2008

Today's practice consisted of mostly drilling. Levi helped me with set ups and getting my opponents feet to move to open up shots better. He had some good advice on flare outs as well. Plus transition drilling with him is like wrestling an actual match. We also had a king of the mat and 30 and 15 second shots from top and bottom. For conditioning we did ten to win. Oh and almost forgot we stayed in our stances for a whole match worth of time hopefully next time we do this it will be more comfortable. more »

Frustration!!!

December 12, 2008

The ever present wintery mix has been battering the new england region for the better part of this week. For us that means more practice and less outside competition. Our meet with white mountain was canceled due to the poor travel conditions. The Con Val Invite that we were in for tomorrow has been canceled already because of the Ice Storm. Con Val has no electricity at this point so they decided to cancel the tournament. So next week we get back at it and hopefully have a tri meet on wednesday with Souhegan and milford. Surround Yourself with good people and good things will happen

Kyle Boore | Profile
December 10, 2008

We have a saying around the college...."Surround yourself with good people and good things will happen". It's no secret. If you have a goal that seems hard to reach surrounding yourself with people that have the same purpose will help you achieve that goal.In wrestling at any level there is a club or team that seems to perform year after year. This is because they are all working towards the same goal. If your training partner has the same goal as you , Lets say winning a state title, and you are both working hard to achieve that goal. That… more »

As a fund raiser and a tool to get some attention to the sport we had a scrimage at our wrestling facility... Our team was divided into two squads (the seniors lead by rob as white, and the underclassmen lead by myself as blue). The roosters may have appeared a little one sided, but the blue squad really stepped up and i think wrestled some very very good matches it may not have shown on the final score but the effort put out was wat i was counting. started day out with a trip to fitness center. Did 5 rounds of 5 dumbell lunges each leg and 15 db swings with 60lb db. Then ran mile. Practice was more relaxed today and i tend to let myself slack on days like this, (NEVER seem to find my flow on these days!) Did some live wrestling after learning cement mixers from standing and butt on mat which i found useful cause i have gotten caught there a few times, but well have to wait and see for during an actual match. Here in New Hampshire we start the season before Thanksgiving. So last week we did our weight cert. This week we come back from Turkey Day and the kids are all getting on the scale and laughing, sighing, and shaking their heads. As we all did these wrestlers ate, ate and then ate some more. That is what Thanksgiving is all about. I happen to love this Holiday, because the main idea of the day is to eat as much as possible, then take a nap and eat again.
