Huge wrestling fan!

There is nothing like this sport, my son wrestled for the first time his freshman year and I was instantly hooked! For the boys that enter this sport and stick with it, it can truly change their confidence level. It gets them in the best shape of their lives and builds an interesting network of friendships with those whom they face in the ring. Unlike the tradtional team sports it gives the particpant the ability to compete individually and as a team. more »

For now, my goal is to get guys out, join the team and have as competitive a room as we can get. Competition breeds success and we will be successful this year, no doubt about it. WHY GRECO?

I read a great article the other day by Isaac Ramaswamy, a coach at Sachem High School and one of the masterminds of New York’s Freestyle and Greco-Roman teams. I’ve known Isaac for a long time and hold tremendous respect for him and his abilities as an athlete and coach. His article “Greco-Roman Skills in Folkstyle Wrestling” is a sidebar in USA Wrestling’s Coach’s Guide to Excellence. I guess I was intrigued by his article because I am a believer in Greco-Roman helping wrestlers improve Folkstyle success. I learned a switch in 8th grade in my living room. I didn’t… more »

Introduction

Preface: To all in the Flowrestling community, this introductory post is taken from my blog on Masswrestling.com. I will be posting more of them up on Flo when I get around to it, but some are intended specifically for a Massachusetts audience. If you would like to read them for now, they can be seen here: http://masswrestling.com/rollie. Enjoy. When I started wrestling in third grade, I had no idea how much my life would change over the coming years. I came home from my first practice and told my dad, “This is what I want to do.” That day was… more »

I want to thank the college coaches, Vin Santaniello of Shore Thing, Aaron Gottesman, theshoreconference.com, and most of all the wrestlers for making the event worthwhile. The quote of the evening came from one of the wrestlers who said,"although I'll miss a night of wrestling, this evening could change my life." The amazing things kids will say. I hope this evening was beneficial to all those who participated and all college bound wrestlers keep September 6th available for next year because the next college fair will be held at Jackson Memorial High School. more »

Anyone play Madden 09?

Barry Walkors | Profile

Anyone play Madden 09? I have played EA's Madden NFL since the early 90's. I've seen its ups and downs. Sometimes the game is just a simple roster update with a few new features. The Madden 09 promises lots of new features and much more fluid animations. This game has a constant problem in previous versions and it still occurs in the 09 release. Madden NFL players have been having problems of the game freezing up at different times of the game. There is nothing more annoying being in the middle of a game and have the game freeze up… more »

COMBAT WRESTLING'S ULTIMATE OPPONENT!

WWSPORT_COM | Profile
September 4, 2008

As I look back at my freshman year in college I can now appreciate what was an eye opening experience. I was able to solidify a starting spot over a senior, won over 20 matches, placed in every tournament our team competed in, and secured a win against my opponent from Cornell to help lead our to team to a victory. Unfortunately, during that match, one of my teammates became infected with a major skin disease. Even more unfortunate, I caught that skin disease a week later. I was out of the line-up and off the mat for three weeks.… more »

Creative Practice Idea

A few years ago I read an intriguing article in W.I.N Magazine by Olympic Gold Medalist, Steve Fraser. Coach Fraser wrote about a type of practice that was used when he competed at the University of Michigan and utilizes now as the Greco-Roman National Team Coach. The practice is called a “grind match”. After reading about “grind matches”, I quickly implemented the idea into our practices. For me, the grind match wasn’t just about improving the condition of my student-athletes; it offered much more for the program that we were trying to develop. The grind match is just what it… more »

BIG Mistakes Wrestlers Make while Training

Zach Even - Esh | Profile
September 1, 2008

A big mistake wrestlers / coaches make is to incorporate too much circuit training. Especially in season. If you are wrestling every day, drilling, live wrestling, etc. - this IS circuit training. You want to focus on the trait that is being negelcted, and that would be the development / improvement of strength endurance and power endurance: simply put, this is your ability to maintain strength and power for long periods of time. Right now, in the fall, several months out from the season we will work circuits with heavy loads and moderate reps. We also do lots of energy… more »
