We, as wrestlers, are always trying to find the perfect pre/post match food. When I was a younger athlete in high school, I remember concocting different formulas to drink after weigh-ins to give me extra “energy”. One of my favorites was grape juice and honey. I was sure that this was my perfect “fuel” for pre-match. The bad thing about my “ideal” concoction was that it left me with a sugar low! I never thought about the perfect foods nature offered that sustained energy over several hours because of the different types of carbohydrates they offered. Fast forward twenty years… more »

I have to laugh the way this all started....in a backyard, b/c I had no money to afford a barbell... So, I trained the guys w/what I had...the stones in my Dad's backyard and bodyweight drills... We also ran to nearby playgrounds and attacked the surroundings. I didn't know any better, all I knew is that there was to be no excuses from me or from the wrestlers I trained. Ok, so it wasn't the best performance we have seen from the US wrestlers. However, if you look at the BIG PICTURE, I think that you will see an exciting progression of success in the years to come. First, we have youth on our side. If you look at the 17 Olympians representing the US, only two were returning team members (Vering & Cormier) and if you factor in retirement (maybe we lose three team members) we have a great team returning, especially with the depth of the national team to replace those retirements. I agree with the statement (in Martin's blog) that "it all comes down to how our system is setup in the USA" ("Twilly's" comment), but I think financial situations of athletes is a more peripheral issue in the bigger picture, though still important. Training Center approach seems to be working quite well- but is asking a lot to have a kid full of promise forgo a free college education in the NCAA (which might be a better service to the guy for the rest of his life than a gold medal around hi neck, but I am open to debate… more »

Wrestling in the 2008 Summer Olympics has concluded. As predicted by many, the Russians dominated with 11 total medals (6 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze). Our U.S. team was able to capture 3 medals (1 gold and 2 bronze). Yes we all can say that this was an off year for U.S. Olympic wrestlers. Now, should people within our wrestling community not compare the backgrounds of our successful wrestlers and the others who finished empty handed? Alright guys, so this is the very beginning of the off-season. After a pretty decent summer, I am ready to start this off-season. As I sat on my couch Friday night watching the opening ceremony I looked forward to seeing two teams; USA, of course, and the country of my favorite wrestler Buvaisar Saitiev, Russia. First came Russia and I was shocked to see not Saitiev holding the flag but some basketball player from Utah, I believe.
