Cutting Weight

Jennifer Chapman | Profile
February 27, 2009

I was supposed to post this video last night but all I wanted to do was go to bed. Cutting weight is definitely starting to get harder. So Monday I was 119, as of mid day Thursday I was 114. Sure, people can say cutting five pounds is easy, but I find the hardest part is not putting it right back on. I was really happy with yesterday into this morning. I finished my morning workouts and decided to give my body a rest last night, so I was more careful about what I ate. Thursday's meals: yogurt before bike/run… more »

It's not just a sport...

Brad Anderson | Profile

Last night wasn't the way any coach or wrestler wants to end the team portion of the season. The way our guys wrestled against Byron Center will haunt me until the second week in November, months and months from now. It will be the reason I get up early every day and all the motivation I need as a coach to work harder, dig deeper and stay later...Nonetheless, after letting last nights' disappointment distill, I have to remind myself to take stock of the blessings of this season. Our win against Caledonia could've been a movie script. The drama, heart… more »

4A 160 lb. North Carolina State Champion!

Matt Colvard | Profile
February 26, 2009

I've worked for 12 years and it all culminated last Saturday night into finally winning the state championship. I beat a really good opponent, Evan Baker from Scotland County, a senior, and won the 4A 160 lb. State Championship. It was a great feeling. My team won its 20th State Championship, so I have been on 6 consecutive State Championship teams at Cary now (3 dual team and 3 individual state championships). Coach Winterton was really happy! Now I'm totally concentrated on Junior Nationals, took one day off, and got back into the saddle at Arrichion. I know Ty, Anthony,… more »

If I were in Charge of NCAA Division I Wrestling By Stephen “Johnnythompsonnum1” Stonebraker This is the plan that I would instill. I would have Five Regional qualifying tournaments at the end of the year. The Middle Regional – Including 16 teams – Iowa, Penn State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Iowa State, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa State. The Top 8 in each weight class would qualify for the NCAA’s. Every year the regional would get 80 qualifiers. The Eastern Regional – Including 19 teams – Clarion, Cleveland State, Pittsburgh, Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, Edinboro,… more »

Proud Coach

Curtis Gocke | Profile
February 25, 2009

I have never been more proud of our athletes than yesterday. You can talk about winning tournaments and winning state medals and how honorable that is. What our kids did yesterday is beyond that. We had a member or our wrestling community pass away on Friday night. This member just so happened to be one of our young mans mom. The support and respect our team brought to their teammate and past wrestlers in the family was amazing. What a great support system. This is the true meaning of team. more »

Secondly I made it to the Texas Region 3 Tournament. I might have went 1-2, but i still have 2 years to improve greatly. Now its time for the extra, I acheived having the best record on the team and also being the only sophomore to qualify for the regional tournament. A good year? The Experiment

Jim Harshaw | Profile
February 20, 2009

There’s an experiment going on in wrestling. It’s going on quietly in a corner of the world not particularly known for it’s wrestling. The hypothesis was that an exceptional high school wrestling coach can be an exceptional Division I collegiate coach. The first experiment begun at Old Dominion University 5 years ago. Steve Martin, the offspring of the legendary wrestling family in the Virginia Beach area, was the don of Great Bridge High School and led the program to the nation’s elite. The second experiment began coincidentally in the same state. Three years ago Virginia Tech hired Kevin Dresser of… more »

The key to winning

Curtis Gocke | Profile
February 18, 2009

The key is to stay focused and not get caught up in all the hoopla surrounding the state tournament. Our mindset has to be that we are going to Omaha to win matches and bring home medals. We can't be satisfied with simply making it there. -Travis McIntosh: Travis is set to make his second trip to the state tournament where he finished with a 1-2 record last year. He is wrestling with a lot of confidence and if he can stay focused, has a good shot to come home with a medal.-Jesse Browne: The district tournament was the first… more »

Character

February 16, 2009

In the depths of the Holland locker room on January 7th, we were faced with a decision: Wrestle with character or resign ourselves to mediocrity and complacency. The team was quiet as the coaching staff made their entrance into the locker room. Seated against the walls of the drab and ill-lit dungeon, the Rangers could only imagine the burst of retribution they were about to receive. Instead, in very measured tones and whispers, the coaching staff delivered a requiem of our expectations. On the FHC Wrestling coaching staff, we take practice and competition very seriously. Not because of wins or… more »

A few days before, Matt had his talk with Spencer as Spencer’s mom watched silently at the back of his dark and quiet hospital room. Matt had been trying to put together the words that would prepare his son for what was to come. How can a father explain death, life, love, girls, growing up and tell a son so many important things in just a few moments? They talked about God, and heaven, about trying his best, and being honest, and about being a man. They talked about being good for his mother and remembering that dad is proud… more »
