The Big Show

As the Freeman Tournament is so called, was not so big. Getting to bed at 1:15 on a Thursday night is not a good way to start the weekend. Two champs, a second and two thirds is ok though. The boys have a chance to compete against some varsity kids, and also have team points. Thought Jacob Pierce wresled very well along with Cody larsen. more »

This is an excerpt of a story I am in the midst of. I'm a little over half way through and have come to understand some of the difficulties in writing a book. I thought I'd stick it on flo to see what type of respnses I get. The story evolves around two HS wrestlers seeking a state title - twists and turns find them on opposing sides in the same weight class.....here's a bit of it John is quick and confident, and this is a chance to take out the potential state champ before they even get to the… more »

After a day off from our crazy weekend, we have had practice the last two days and have really been working on staying in good position. We have started to focus on the athletes strength and not try to put new things into their head unless they ask. Our motto has been countdown it started with 16 or 13, 15 or 12 now its' 14 or 11, the smaller number represents practices till districts, larger number represents practices left for those that make it to state. Sometimes the key to success is staying alive the longest. When you are at sea, and your boat has capsized it isn’t always about being the best swimmer. At times it’s simply having the will to keep your head above water, when it would be easy to say to your self my ship has sunk, I am lost at sea. I am tired. I will close my eyes, and sink. But instead you continue to struggle towards the shore, because you have no stomach for the alternative. In my mind that resilience through tough times, to hold on and keep working… more »

Our All Area tournament Trophy was finally liberated. We did not win the Tourny with very much flare or style but we went out there and slugged our way to the finis. Twelve points is all the difference we could muster, and now we need to work toward Leagues. Our arch League foe will be host to us on Wednesday. We are both 4-0 in League, and keenly aware of each others strengths. The tiniest details are giant. The Basics are the difference between first and a change in "ch'i". Sound solid foundation, this is what we build our dreams… more »

The 160lb matches were worth the price of admission, with Derek St John dominating the field. I was able to film 103-thru 189 in the finals and about 13 matches of the semis and wrestle backs. USA Mag ranked wrestlers include: Derek ST John, Nick Moore, Evan Knight,John Nicholson, Adam Perrin, Dylan Carew, Michael Moreno. 22 ranked wrestlers in all. It was a great tournament, and I expect some possible changes in weight brackets due to the outcomes of certain matches. more »

One of my first memories of being involved in the sport of wrestling was qualifying for my first Empire State Games. It was a great experience, as I gained many friendships and learned a lot about wrestling techniques. I continued to qualify for the Empire State Games through high school, into college, and even post college. The Games are an experience that all athletes, young or old, should be able to experience. It’s ridiculous to think that after 30 years of history, the state is going to allow this great tradition to elapse. The Empire State Games has created opportunities… more »

We have yet to be truly effected by any injury bug (knock on wood), but we have had the many sicknesses that are running all over our school. instead of athe panting of hard work, it's a cough or sniff, or sneeze. During this time of year it's very easy to get in a rut and continue to do the same thing over and over and over and over. Well, we've come a long way this season and now it starts into the main event. Beating Southmount was a real thrill, was very proud of our team for that win! Sr. Night was a little surreal for me I guess, I've got a pretty good mental block going on as far as letting this season end. Yes Mr. president we still have work to do. In many ways this week. We are still working on being a very technically sound team. Our future is struggling right now, JV tournaments have not been easy for us, they will have many opportunities to correct these mistakes over the next month. Our other work is that we have three tournaments at home this week. Our community and team, alumni and club will all play a huge role in making this weekend a success. more »

I think that at regionals we need to ack as a team. most people may need to learn to control themselfs. But some of you may not make it to the finals this is still ok because knowing that you gave 110% is great! At the time that the match starts you need to have a automatic reaction to what is happening. so make sure you lesson to your coach because just by lessoning you can win but you have to lesson. Also at the end no matter what happens remember give 110%. :P more »

I have heard 3 coaches tell this story in my life, but never understood what it meant till recently. "The Mat is a Mirror of your life..." People are always watching you whether you like it or not. When you step on a mat, people will take notice of what type of person you are! Are you passive, aggressive, competitive, timid, scared, etc... The way you act on a mat will be a mirror to your personality. Are you sportsman-like or are you a cry baby? Do you win/lose with class or do you lose control of your emotions? Think… more »

The Mind of a Wrestler

Jarrod Spencer | Profile
January 16, 2009

We all know that wrestling at the elite level is 90% mental. I have found that more than many other sports, wrestlers are willing to put in the work to develop their mental skills. I applaud this because the mental skills learned through wrestling will stay with a wrestler far longer than the physical skills. That is one reason why so many wrestlers are so successful in life beyond wrestling. So the question for you then is this: What do you believe are the mental skills that successful wrestlers have that make them great both on the mats and beyond?… more »

I started off coaching 3rd-8th grade and that's the way it will stay. If I coached high school, then I get them for four years, and then they head off to college and I'd rarely get to see them wrestle again. But if I coach a kids team that is a direct feeder program to the high school, I get to continue to watch them grow.
