Orange Park Wrestling: part 1
November 26, 2007
I get questions all the time about how we were able, in one year to go from fielding just 12 varsity wrestlers to having a full Varsity and JV team.
Here is the order:
Unity within the coaching staff
Positive, Positive, Positive
They're Kids, They Want Discipline and FUN!
The first thing you need to develop is unity within your coaching staff. I am extremely blessed to have a head coach who shares the same vision and work ethic I do. Also, if you are the head coach of a team, utilize the talents of the individuals within your reach.
My head coach is supremely knowledgeable in the field of strength and conditioning. So, he is in charge of that department. He takes my suggestions, but ultimately he is the decision maker when it comes to strength and conditioning.
The other assistant coach we have is excellent when it comes to paperwork and organization. This might sound like a coach who doesn't do much, but the fact is, his job might be the most important. If it weren't for him, we'd probably forget to get on the bus! Also, he has the respect of the kids, and by making him the head JV coach, it instills discipline in the kids who we'll need later (if not sooner).
Lastly, there is me. I am the energy behind our program. I live wrestling 24 hours a day. I dream wrestling, I study wrestling, I study the human mind, I study the art of coaching. Anything related to making me a better coach, I study. Anything related to motivating young people, I study.
Challenge your coaching staff to come up with their own ideas. Challenge your coaching staff to use their talents. You know why the Patriots are so good? It's a combination of talent, and Bill Belicheck surrounding himself with coaches who COACH. He trusts them to coach the players. He doesn't micro-manage, he observes and makes corrections when needed.
Have as many meetings as you can possibly manage within a week. Hang out together as much as possible. Talk about the goals for your club and most importantly gather ideas make decisions together. If everyone feels as though they have some part in the success of the team, everyone will be happy.
