FINALLY COMPETITION IS HERE
November 7, 2007
Hello UNC wrestlers/alumni/fans! This is my first installment of blogs, which will be used to keep you up to speed with Bear Wrestling. We’ve had a very productive preseason and first couple weeks of official practice. Our freshman class has been working extremely hard to make the transition from high school to college wrestling (top-bottom/ridding time). A few standouts in preseason training were Casey Cruz and Ryan Johnson. These two men were top finishers in our runs and have been exceptional to coach, as they are truly dedicated to daily improvement. From distance runs with weekly time improvements to stadium runs that allowed our team to push themselves to their limits; the team is really itching to compete.
Our wrestling shape got a kick-start with some intense drill matches and serious battling during live goes. The men have been gaining confidence in their technique and conditioning by staying after practices to improve on their weaknesses. A couple of our athletes have been chomping at the bit to compete, so they committed to wrestling in the Sunkist International Open. The two wrestlers were Michael Threadgill and Patrick Carey. Patrick has made tremendous gains since last season. He accomplished All-American honors at both the University National and the Fila Junior National tournament after last years colligate season. At Sunkist, Patrick won a match in Greco against a Japan wrestler and finished in the top 4 at 96 kilos. While the competition was tremendously tough, Patrick and Michael got to see some elite wrestling at the senior Olympic level.
Coach Maughan and Coach Cherrington stayed here in Colorado for our “Intra-squad Dual†and “Takedown Childhood Cancer- Wrestling Clinicâ€. The events were held at Ponderosa High School. We chose Ponderosa because of their great wrestling tradition and its proximity to Denver.
The majority of our freshman class made the long trip to Powell Wyoming for the Northwest College Open on Nov. 3rd. Casey Cruz won the 133 lb. weight class, Patrick Carey and Justin Gaethje took 3rd, followed by a 4th place finish by Tanner Weiks and 5th place was achieved by Lance Gallegos.
As for the entire team, we will begin our season at the University of Wyoming Open on Nov. 10th and stay home the following Sunday (Nov. 18th) to host an open tournament here in Greeley.
