Huskies Collect Three Wins at UW-LaCrosse Duals

LaCrosse, Wis. - The St. Cloud State University wrestling team improved to 4-2 on the 2009-10 season with a trio of victories at the UW-LaCrosse Duals in LaCrosse, Wis. on Dec. 5. The #10 ranked Huskies posted wins over UW-Stevens Point (28-9), Loras (48-0) and UW-LaCrosse (25-13).
Junior John Sundgren earned three wins on the day, and all were by pins against UW-SP, Loras and UW-L. He is now 7-2 on the season, while teammate Tad Merritt is 10-0 this year at 165-pounds.

St. Cloud State's Gabe Suarez Sets New Team Record

SCSU junior Gabe Suarez set a new team record on Nov. 21, with a pin in :13 at the Cobber Open. Suarez pinned MSUM’s Michael Garcia just :13 into the match in the opening round of action at 149-pounds. The old record of :14 was set by Dick Halbert during the 1967-68 season at SCSU. more »

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team enjoyed much success at the 2009 Cobber Open, which was held at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. on Nov. 21. In total, the Huskies earned five titles at the Cobber Open this season. 125-Pounds At 125-pounds, SCSU was led by Trent Herold, who posted a 4-1 record. He claimed third place at the Open with a 5-4 win over Josh Kelly of Concordia. 133-Pounds At 133-pounds, Shane McQuade led the Huskies with a 3-1 record that placed him in the championshop match. St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State University sophomore Tad Merritt (Canby/H.S.) has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate wrestler of the week for Nov. 16.
Merritt earned the league honor by posting a 3-0 record in action at the Northwestern Duals on Nov. 14, in Evanston,
Ill. Merritt opened the day with a 10-4 win over NCAA Division I opponent Kyle Bertin of Northwestern.

SCSU Wrestling to Host Husky Open on Dec. 8

St. Cloud State University will host the Husky Open on Saturday, Dec. 8, in the University's Halenbeck Hall South Fieldhouse. The action for this event will start at 9 a.m., with admission being $6 and $3 for students and youth.
This marks the 37th year that SCSU has hosted a wrestling tournament, and this will be the second year of the Open format. The Husky Open will feature over 250 wrestlers from many of the nation's top NCAA and NJCAA programs. Schools slated to participate in the tournament include SCSU, UW-LaCrosse, Minnesota State Mankato, Itasca C.C., Ridgewater… more »

St. Cloud, Minn. -The St. Cloud State University wrestling Team Black dominated Team Red by a score of 33-8 at the Annual Husky Black/Red Classic on Nov. 10, in SCSU's Halenbeck Hall. The intra-squad meet was highlighted by falls from Team Black’s Westy Hanson (So, 125lbs., Crookston, MN), John Sundgren (RFr, 157lbs., Blaine, MN) and Tad Merritt (Fr, 165lbs., Canby, MN). The Team Red was highlighted by a technical fall by Brad Padgett (Jr, 184lbs., Buckley, WA).

St. Cloud State University Wrestling Season Preview 2007-08

St. Cloud State University wrestling will begin its second season under the leadership of coach Steve Costanzo in 2007-08.
The Huskies entered the Costanzo era with a 4-7 record in 2006-07, but the return of several top notch veterans and redshirt athletes along with one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II recruit classes has produced a new sense of optimism for success this winter.
“We hope to have a much stronger team this year,†Costanzo said. “We will be a young team,and our line-up will be a lot different than last year.â€
