The Husky Voice – Volume 1
St. Cloud State University Wrestling
By Coach Steve Costanzo
Today is the first day of fall and the crusty corn fields are showing significant signs that the wrestling season is just around the corner. As there is hope for a bountiful harvest, there is hope for a successful season of Husky wrestling.
Getting Started
It has been an exciting pre-season for the Husky wrestling team. Fifteen new members have joined the squad and the incoming recruiting class has been nationally recognized by Wrestling USA Magazine. While our work-outs have been challenging both physically and mentally, we have enjoyed the fellowship of spending time together.
Academically, we are into our fifth week of the semester. It seems as though the team is adjusting well to the return of a new school year. Team study tables and Greenhouse hours are underway and our first grade checks will soon be returned to the coaching staff.
Retreating
Friday, September 25 – Saturday, September 26 the Husky grapplers will be having a team retreat in Kimball, MN. Former University of Minnesota Assistant Coach Marty Morgan will be the team’s guest speaker for the event. The coaching staff hopes the retreat will serve as an opportunity for team members to relax and get to know each away from the every-day grind.
Right Around The Corner
Official wrestling practice is scheduled for Monday, October 12. Our first competition is scheduled for Sunday, November 8 as we will be hosting our Annual Black/Red Classic. Our schedule has been upgraded this year from years past. Our first team competition is slated for Saturday, November 14 at NCAA DI Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. The Huskies are scheduled to take on Northwestern University, Eastern Michigan and North Central College at the Northwestern Duals.
Lending a Hand
Saturday, October 3 the Husky’s will be participating in the Annual Mississippi River Clean-up. Each year, the Husky wrestlers are involved in several community service projects. These events are an excellent way to give back to the community and show our appreciation for the opportunity to be a part of something special – collegiate athletics.
Welcome Coach Cy Wainwright
Cy Wainwright enters his first year with the Husky wrestling program as a graduate assistant coach after winning the 2009 NCAA DII National Championship for Newberry College.
“I am very proud to be a part of a program with such a rich tradition in wrestling,” said Wainwright. “I look forward to serving as a coach and mentoring these young student-athletes. This will be an exciting year for our wrestling program and SCSU athletics.”
