Wrestling's Fight
December 12, 2007
So my first blog may not have gone as well as I had hoped. My intensions were only to vent a little and inform as many as I could about the University Oregon's decision to drop wrestling.
However, it seems that i may have offended a few readers, enough for them to respond strongly. I respect everyone's opinion who weighed in on my post, its their right. I may have attacked the situation from a different angle, one that some do not like. Just know that I am only here for the promotion of wrestling. With this said, I am surprised a little at how much negativity I read in the comments. This troubles me a little. Maybe I opened a can of worms with my attacking style of the situation and deserved the backlash. None the less, what worries me is the fact that the main idea was lost in all of this, and that is that in recent years several division 1 wrestling programs have been eliminated and little has been done to reverse any of these mistakes.
The University of Oregon is one of the most progressive institutions in the US and has a strong financial position and backing from several prominent donors. My only hope is that the decision there, and other places of higher learning, is reversed. They have the funds, facilities, athletes and thus the ability to have a successful division 1 wrestling program. The sport is needed in Oregon, the PAc-10 and the entire country.
Wrestling must fight back! Someone asked, “Where’s the petition?†Anyone interested can go to www.saveoregonwrestling.com. The sight has many interesting forms of media that can be easily accessed.
Well we have a tough road trip this weekend in Cali and I am still not packed. We take on Cal-Poly on Friday and Sunday the guys wrestle at Cal State Fullerton. Hopefully everyone can make it out to a division 1 wrestling event and show their love and support for a sport that gives so much to everyone involved!
Hopefully, now we are all closer to being on the same page. Our sport needs a united front, if we as a wrestling community hope to save what we love at the collegiate level!
