Normal College (1849-1852); Michigan State Normal School (1852-1899; Michigan State Normal College (1899-1956) Nickname: Adopted in 1900; "N" for 'NORMALITES' or 'NORMALS'; then "Y" for 'MEN OF YPSI'; then in 1929 adopted "HURONS"; Eastern Michigan College (1956-1959); Eastern Michigan University (1959-Present) Nickname's: Changed from adopted "HURONS" (1929-1991) to the "EAGLES" (1991-Present) mascot called "SWOOP".
