Kowboys Put Three in FHSAA State Finals
February 16, 2008
Kowboy Fans:
The Osceola varsity wrestling team placed three members in the FHSAA 3A State Finals for tonight at 6:30 pm, and are guaranteed four state placewinners with three others still battling for a spot on the award stand.
Freshman Pete Baldwin (119 lbs) led off the semifinal charge with a second period fall over defending state champion Gabe Chandler of Miami Braddock. He will face 2007 State Runner up Andrew Sifakis of Lake Mary in the finals tonight. Gabe Bird lost a heartbreaker of a match, when an apparent takedown was not awarded in the third period of his 140 lb semifinal. He will wrestle back this morning, but is assured of finishing in the top 6, marking the third consecutive year the sophomore will leave Lakeland with a medal! Alex Eggers followed his teammate and completely manhandled Luis Montalvo of South Dade, racking up a 12-1 lead before securing a fall early in the thrid period. He will face South Broward's Ivan Louposhansky in tonight's final. Finally, Niko Brown stepped in at 171 and won a hard-fought 6-4 overtime win to give Coach Tribit some more gray hair and get his place in the finals! He will wrestle Miami-American's Tommy Perez in the finals tonight.
Still competing this morning for the medal rounds are: Matt Jones (125 lbs), Tim Eggers (145 lbs), and Levi Clemons (160 lbs). They will compete in the consolation quarter finals at 10:00 am, followed by the semifinals at noon. If they win their first match, they will be guaranteed Top 6 placement and will wrestle in the consolation semifinals for a chance at 3rd place.
As of this morning, Osceola sits in 2nd place in the team standings, 30 points ahead of 3rd place Oviedo. We need to win some matches to maintain that standing, so please put your prayers in for the Kowboys! Either way, the team has already set school records for most finalists and tied one for most overall placers before today's action.
The consolation finals will begin at 4:00 pm and the Championship Finals at 6:30 pm. Hope to see you all there, cheering on the Kowboys!
