Mental Toughness
February 2, 2008
I wanted to write this blog to let younger kids who might read this about the mental toughness this sport offers. I'm an ex-wrestler, and now an official of 8 years. I wish I knew then what I know now. As an official I see it from a different perspective. To be a wrestler you have to be a little different in the sense that you have to be physical as well as mentally tough every time you step out on the mat. You have to envision your takedowns in your head and know what your going to do and how your going to react in many situations. For the younger guys out there: you are only young once, if you want to be successful in this sport you must be willing to sacrifice some things at a young age. You may want to do other things or let your mind wander a little but that is what seperates champions from the others. I had my moments as a wrestler but looking back I could of dug a little deeper than I did. I wasn't a great wrestler but I got it done 90% of the time. Now looking back I could of improved on that 10%. So when your coaches are pushing you to dig a little deeper think about what you have heard over and over. If you are giving your all then that's all you can do but don't settle for just getting by cause you'll regret when your older I promise you. Ask any old wrestler if they could go back in the day when they were wrestling if they wish they would of done something different or tried a little harder. Just wanted to share some insight which is nothing new but the more you hear it the more it sinks in. Good Luck to all wrestlers across the nation and keep working hard!
