Tis better to give than receive
December 24, 2007
What’s the difference between a fan and a supporter? Seventh grade humor aside, to my mind, there is a clear difference. A fan takes and a supporter gives. Haven’t we been taught since we were kids that it’s better to give than to receive? It’s the season for giving and here are some opportunities for you to give to the sport of wrestling.
From past blogs
Save Oregon Wrestling – The athletic director at the University of Oregon has decided to drop wrestling from the university’s roster of sports. A group of concerned fans is making a serious effort to have this decision rescinded and are trying to raise money to support the effort.
Here’s the link to the Save Oregon Wrestling donation page:

If you need a little more motivation before you go there, you might want to view this video.
Beat the Streets – Approximately 60% of America’s middle school and high school students have no access to interscholastic wrestling – most of them in our major cities. Al Bevilacqua and others have created Beat the Streets in New York City to remedy this situation. They have been amazingly successful. Read my blog from October 29, 2007 or go to www.beat-the-streets.org for more information. Then – if you’re in one of those cities (like Detroit) with no wrestling opportunities – get involved.
Pledges for Pins – Support University of Northern Iowa Panther wrestling through this unique program. Pledge a specific amount for every pin scored by the Panthers this season. Your donation will be used for improvements to the wrestling facilities and to honor the rich heritage of UNI wrestling. For more information, please read my November 26 blog.
Hammond Morton High School – Hammond, IN Morton High School lost its’ wrestling room and equipment to an arson fire. Insurance will cover much of the loss, but they need your help make up the rest. The December 11 blog will provide more details. You can send a donation to:
Scott Garrison
Head Wrestling Coach
Morton High School
6915 Grand Ave
Hammond IN 46323
Other opportunities
Iowa Public Television - A pioneer in the broadcast coverage of college wrestling, IPTV has been forced to cut the number of meets this year to 4. If you’ve enjoyed those broadcasts over the years, thank them with your financial support. To make a contribution, go to https://www.iptvfriends.org/secured/Pledge2/. At the very bottom of the page you will be asked to identify your favorite program. Click on college wrestling.
Nationwide Giving – Richard Rockwell is a wrestling coach at Riverside Junior/Senior High School in Boardman, OR. He is also founder and webmaster of The Oregon Wrestling Forum. Early in the fall he added the Nationwide Giving page to his site. It is a clearinghouse for teams and clubs who have equipment or financial needs; or for entities that have things to donate. Currently, there are teams listed that need used mats, equipment and monetary donations. There is also someone that has headgear available. Go to http://www.theowf.net/giving_nationwide to check it out.
The Legends Fund – A joint venture of USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum, The Legends Fund promotes the sport of wrestling at many levels, from funding Hall of Fame events to supporting grass roots development efforts to assisting our Olympic athletes. Please go to http://www.legendsfund.org/whygive.php to learn more.
Your local team – Almost every club, middle school, high school and college wrestling team can use some help. Volunteer or send them a check.
Send kids to a meet – You’d be surprised how many kids are out there wrestling who have never been to a college wrestling meet. Contact your local kids club and buy them all tickets for a meet at the nearest college. You can help make some of those kids fans for life.
Get in the spirit – give back to the sport we all love. Remember – any check you write before the end of the year may be deductible on your 2007 income taxes. If you know of anyone else in the wrestling community that can use some help – post a comment with the necessary information.
And to all of you who read this weekly blog – thank you – and the happiest of holidays to you and yours.
