Thank You

Ben Askren | Profile
February 2, 2009

This is a shout out and a thank you to all of those wrestlers who put it on the line. To me the worst paradox is when I hear a wrestler or coach who complain about how no one wants to watch wrestling, then go out a wrestle a 3-2 boring match that puts even the biggest wrestling fans to sleep. So here is a big thanks to all the wrestlers who make it exciting for me to watch.

Thanks to Jake Herbert for having that intense stare in his eye before the match it got me so pumped up I head butted my Grandma.

Thanks to Bubba Jenkins for making me excited to see a cement mixer all the time.

Thank you to Darrion Caldwell and Ryan Lang for scoring 16 points in 2 minutes of the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Thank you Brent Metcalf for never giving your opponents a second break.

Thank you Reece Humphrey for throwing people on their heads.

Thank you Jayson Ness for having the Audacity to pin good college wrestlers with a half nelson.

Thank you Mike Poeta for your lightning quick Doubles.

There are more of you who make me excited to watch wrestling, so here is a thanks to those guys who get me pumped up to watch some wrestling.

"bensgay"- when you post those things, you make yourself look like such an idiot. I wish for every cowardly comment on youtube and flowrestling there would be one time where the person (i.e Ben) runs into the coward nonsense poster (i'e "bensgay" aka as huge douchebag), and got to whoop your ass in the estimated 10 seconds that it would take him. You really are a joke, all of the people who post dumb . I don't know Ben, and I don't know Collin Palmer, but when people give either of them crap like I have read today it really urks me. Collin is one of the best high school wrestlers in the country, and Ben will probably go down in history, when it is all said in done, as the most entertaining wrestler and one of the best the NCAA has ever had.

Interesting Problem...   February 3 at 10:48am
Well Ben I kind of agree with you...I don't have numbers to back this but I'd imagine there are a significantly higher amount of boxing and mma split decisions then there are KO's (many of which are terribly boring), yet these sports bring in millions/billions in revenue every year. Bottom line: people pay to see these guys get hit. As beautiful as the grappling arts are the average joe is going to turn to the channel that someone is getting hit, not the one where they are getting taken down and turned.

I think the problems with getting people to watch are unfortunately inherent with the sport: after almost every wrestling match (God-willing), even if there are spectacular throws and takedowns the entire match, both guys get up and walk off the mat; the average spectator doesn't know what was just witnessed. What the average spectator does understand, however, is if one man punches or kicks another man more than he gets hit, then he wins. And with every hit is the possibility of a KO, which I have to admit as a lifelong wrestling fan will ALWAYS be more spectacular than a pin.

could not agree more, i understand sometimes its just hard to score on a guy and you might have a low scoring bout.. but to go soo hard in practice every day then just go out there and dance for 6 or 7 minutes makes no sence to me, those six minutes are you time to unleash all that training and work you have been doing in the wrestling room all week and SHINE!

The Anti-Gopher about 3 hours ago.
I guess Dustin Schlatter won't be appearing in Ben's list of exciting wrestlers anytime soon and for that matter the entire Minnesota wrestling team won't either.

what team does jayson ness wrestle for? ....oh ya

thank you ben for doing what wrestling teaches, taking risk and not knowing the reward, sometimes we win sometimes we lose but we have to always try, never stop moving guru, mentally or physically.

I totally agree with you Ben. I cant stand to see two wrestlers go out on a mat and wrestle an escape wins kind of match. Id like to thank Jordan Leen for all his awesome scrambles, Jared Rosholt for being a heavyweight that shoots nasty doubles, and as you already said Brent Metcalf for always bringin it every second every match
