So I find my self sitting in Denver International Airport with some extra time to burn, since getting rerouted from Fargo to Philly. My life has been pretty crazy the last few days since the trials ended. Of course I couldn't ask for more, I achieved a life long dream and my family and friends have been so supportive. As a wrestling fan the 2008 trials was the most exciting trials since 2000 ( i have watched all nine of them and competed in 6), there were many upset and epic battles to watch. Since then I have been back in Columbia for the Tigerstyle wrestling camps, to New Jersey for the Fuel the dream, Back to Columbia, then to Fargo ND for NDSU wrestling camps, now I am waiting to hop on a flight to Philly for wrestling camps in NJ, MD, then finally northern Illinois before I get to training camp on July 3rd. This traveling stuff sure is tough I can't wait to get back to training. The fuel the dream trip was really great because I got to meet all of the other Olympians that I didn't know before and we had a great time, everyone got along really well, which I think is rare to find in the wrestling community will all of the rivalries. The highlight of my trip was being stuck in traffic at 5:30 and deciding with Marcie Van Dusen to hop out and go to a Yankees game. Since neither of us were native New Yorkers it took a while to get the right directions for the Subway. However by the end of the night after taking a train, subway and bus to get back to the hotel I felt like a master of the New York mass transit system. I also recently got a copy of Silent Galdiators, from none other than my main man Martin. It was a really good book, by far the best wrestling book I have ever read. It gives a lot of great insight into the wrestling community and gives an up close look at many of the 2004 olympians. So from here I am taking the red eye to arrive in Philly and teach a couple days of camp. I can't wait to start training again for gold in Beijing. I hope everyone can jump on the bandwagon now and we can ride it all the way to gold.
I have been showing my high school wrestlers your interview after the trials. I was very impressed with the confidence level. I always tell my guys you have to have that "Inner arrogance" to be tough. I also am a big believer in stealing things from other guys and copying what they do. Good luck in China, we're behind you, bring back the gold. ---Doug
