A French Thanksgiving
November 22, 2007
Well today was not the typical Thanksgiving I grew up knowing. I am in Nice, France and I spent today Not eating, and losing weight so I can wrestle tomorrow. I guess I can say I didnt miss out on all of the Thanksgiving festivities because I did have part of a turkey sub from Subway for lunch. It was easy making weight over here because they had a pretty good fitness club we were able to go to. Right now I am in my room trying to be quit because Sean Bormet and Ryan Churella a sleeping. I guess since it is Thanksgiving and all I can write down a few things that I am thankful for.
1. My parents
My parents just like many other parents out there are wrestling freaks. Throughout my childhood and still to this day they have sacraficed a lot to help me with all of my wrestling goals. When I was young my father would get off of work on friday come home and we would leave until sunday night. I would wrestle in a tournament on friday night, then again on saturday, and sometimes we would find some on sundays. I was a unique kid because this is all I ever wanted to do and my parents have been the best support for me.
2. Greg Urbas and the coaches at St. Eds
Some of you may know him but most of you out there may not know who he is, but Coach Urbas is the most genuin man I have meet through wrestling. The reason St. Eds is tops in the nation year in and year out is the time and effort Coach Urbas gives to his wrestlers. This program was the first taste of big time wrestling that I came accross. In my 8th grade year of school when I was looking at high schools I took a visit to St. Eds. My visit happened to be two days before St. Eds wrestled Walsh Jesuit for the national title. I went to a practice there after class was out and ESPN was there filming Scholastic Sports America. I could I not want to go to a school that ESPN was at. I just hope Martin finds the time to make his way to Cleveland.
3. The University of Michigan
I was a decent wrestler coming out of high school but Michigan gave me a chance and I proved from the first day of school that I was able to wrestle in the big ten as well as on the national scene. While at Michigan I have had many great influences. The first one being the "Silver Fox" Joe McFarland. Joe was a great coach to me and mentor while I was in college and still to this day. He gave me the first taste of hard work and what it took to take my wrestling to the next level. The next person is Sean Bormet. Sean was my coach when I was a sophomore in 2000 when he was training for the Olympics. He has had the biggest impact on my freestyle career. When he was training I wanted to be just like him. The next person was Tony Robie, aka "Rambo." Tony took over when Sean left after my sophomore year and gave me a new perspective on training and competing. It was Tony who helped me get on the NYAC team after my Junior year when I finished 4th at the World Team Trials.
4. All of my sponsors.
I concider myself lucky because it is very hard to wrestle for a living and somehow I am doing it without having to work. I have put wrestling in front of everything else in my life right now so I can accomplish my goal of winning an Olympic Gold Medal. Without the University of Michigan, Mr. Churella, Cliff Keen, Asics, and the NYAC I would not be able to wrestle like I do. Dont let me fool you I am not making any money, but I get by and I am able to pay the bills most of the time.
5. Martin and all of you reading this
Well in closing I would like to thank Martin. This guy may travel more then me, which at this point is up for debate ( on miles traveled I have him beat for sure)! It has been a great experience for me to be able to write these blogs about my training and traveling. I would also like to thank everyone out there who reads my blog, and the other blogs on here, and all of those who visit this site on a regular basis. Hopefully all of Martins hard work pays off and wrestling gets more prime time exposer!
I really should try and go to bed it is about 11:30 and I have to wake up at 6:30 to shower and get ready to throw some Russians on their heads.
