Going Home

Well I haven't had much time to write or much to write about since
coming to Krasnoyarsk so sorry about that. My hip still hurts pretty
bad and the team Doctor as suggested I get a MRI when I get home just
to make sure there isn't a hairline fracture, bone chip, or if the
muscle has torn away from the bone. The doctor thinks I may be out up
to 6 weeks. When I first got here it was bruised and swollen so as
the swelling went down I thought it was getting better, but it was
actually getting more tender because the swelling was over the bone
and now with no swelling the bone was sore. I was a little
disappointed I couldn't wrestle because I knew going into the
tournament that who ever won I had beaten. It turned out the guy I
beat in France last year in the finals 5-2 6-0 ended up winning and
one of the bronze medalist I have beaten twice. I could have used the
prize money but oh well. I can't dwell on the fact that I didn't
compete because this was out of my hands. I can't pick and choose when
I am healthy and hurt. All I can do is learn from my training and take
with me the experience. The last time I was hurt and out for more then
a week I took my wrestling to a new level. In 2005 I hurt my SC joint
and couldn't walk without it hurting. I was off the mat for about 2
months and I was able to watch and learn, but most importantly I was
able to lift get strong and run. I think this injury will have the
same results. I haven't had time off in years so my body is telling
me to slow down. I will use this time to focus on winning my first US
Open title and making another team.

Results

As a team we didn't wrestle to the level we would have liked. We had
one champion I'm Steve Mocco and he wrestled the best I have seen him.
Being able to have guys like him around is going to help the team
mature faster then we expect and the results will come we have to be
patient, willing to put the time in, and open. I think the guys we
have on the team will be willing to do so and it will show in the near
future. We are headed to the banquet so I have to leave.

Andy,
Thanks for these blog posts. Could you give us a final one with a little more on what you think you've learned from this trip. Any new Russian techniques or training methods that you think will benefit you in the long run?

Andy,
I hope you heal quickly from your injuries. A few years back you were a clinician at the UNH Wrestling camp, seems to have been one of the benefits of having Aparo as coach at the time. I was one of the counselors and had the priveledge of being in your company. If I had known at the time who I was interacting with and learning from, I'm sure I would have taken better advantage of the situation. Anyways, I follow your contributions to the sport of wrestling, wish you the best of luck, and thank you for some of the help you offered me along the way.

Just curious, but does anyone know what the prize money is for some of these international tournaments?
