Final Participation Grid
The team concludes the organize portion of off season wrestling training schedule with a solid performance at the Air Dome Duals in Williamsport, PA. As a team we finished with a 12th place finish among 32 teams and a 3-4 overall record. The boys handle themselves well and the conditions were challenging (the heat in the air dome), but in the end each boy had wrestled plenty of matches and looked progressively better each bout. Highlights of the Air Dome Duals include Jevon Cook defeating a New Jersey State placer with a solid last minute takedown. Brian Hauser going undefeated, and a number of our wrestlers holding there own against State level talent from the PA, N.J. and NY areas. We received a number of compliments from area coaches on how the kids wrestled and perform. Also very impressive in the duals were Tyler Johnston, who defeated several highly ranked wrestlers from PA; Jordan Freeman who lost by a point to a PA state qualifier, and Tywan Claxton who went 5-2 on the tournament and wrestled perhaps his best tournament against national level competition this off season. Divon Jones, Randall Howard, Adam Pollack, all registered wins in dual meet action and looked very much improved. Sam McIntosh was injured, but still wrestled one bout and came away with a dominating win, and Austin Wilson continues to greatly improved. Sometimes we forget Austin and Randall are just in the first year of wrestling.
Off Season Training Opportunities on Your Own:
Each boy knows exactly what they need to do to improve and get better for next season. Some need to lift, some need to sharpen their technique. Opportunities to get better will be made available at Cleveland State and Beachwood. Beachwood will run open mats, free of charge every Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. until the season begins. They have a few excellent light weights (a State qualifier and a State Alternate at 103, and 112 lb). Cleveland State’s room will be open every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. until the season begins. Antonio Nicholson, CSU Sr. Captain and varsity starter at 149 lb. will provide instruction for anyone who wants to shows up. This also is free. You need to fill out liability waivers for both. It may be a good idea for the kids to car pool together or parents can coordinate along with other parents carpooling opportunities.
Here is the final participation Grid: On average 10 or more wrestlers competed in at least 10 events competing in around 45 to 50 matches. Jordan Freeman and Brian Hauser wrestled close to 60 –matches this off season.
